Nobel Peace Laureate Maria Ressa on Return of the Marcos Dynasty & Social Media Disinformation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- We go to Manila to speak with Filipina Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa about Monday's presidential election in the Philippines, where Ferdinand Marcos Jr. - the only son of the late Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos - appears to have won in a landslide alongside his running mate, the daughter of current President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa says the Marcos campaign used social media to cover up the historical memory of the family's brutal policies and the uprising in 1986 that ultimately ended Marcos's two-decade dictatorship. "These elections are emblematic of the impact of concerted information operations of disinformation where it literally changed history in front of our eyes," says Ressa. Her forthcoming book is titled "How to Stand Up to a Dictator: The Fight for Our Future."

Maria Ressa is a dual Philippine-US citizen. She is indeed a Filipino citizen, so she can legally own a Philippine media company.

I beg to disagree that Marcos Jr. used the media to rebrand the Marcos name. I was in the EDSA revolution when his dictator father was ousted but I voted for the young Marcos , why ? because I'm tired of the past Presidents that are so corrupt
( except Rodrigo Duterte ) and based on the random local citizens interview during the election campaign asked why they are voting Marcos Jr. , they wanted for a Change the older folks would reminisce the peaceful and orderly life during the late Marcos reign but of course on the other side of the coin , Marcos Sr. was brutal to his political opponents , I don't want to equate the Father's rule to the young Marcos it's prejudice to say that the young Marcos will follow the path of how his father ruled ( being a dictator ). I don't think Marcos Jr will sit as President to avenge his father. I'm sure he will do for the betterment of the Filipino people and finally clear the bad image of the Marcoses in the past. The young Marcos has 31M votes under his belt got to respect the voice of the majority and give this young man a chance.

3. Is posting Marcos Sr's achievements like the "built infrastructure" on social media fake news and disinformation?
4. Saying Marcos won because of disinformation is a big insult to the 30+ million Filipinos who voted for him... A third of these voters don't even know how to use Facebook and Twitter and can't afford data, especially those in rural areas..

Filipino here and Ressas's primary concern is about people sharing (usually false) contents in social media to boster certain candidates. It's a legitimate one though Ressa's relationship with the NED, Obama, Clinton, etc is questionable at best.
Julian Assange has always been nominated for the Nobel prize. He was a RIVAL to Ressa. NED needed Ressa to have a Nobel halo to help legitimise her as a "journalist", which is futile since the Nobel prize is no longer regarded like it used to be, especially in Asia. Assange will never get the Nobel while being persecuted by the US and UK. Ressa is funded by the US State Dept through NED (cia) so, get this, she's abosolutely ANTI-ASSANGE. Ressa's news website outfit in the Philippines, Rappler is rated lower than the lowest tabloid. Although claiming as a naturalised Filipino citizen, Ressa and her Rappler are repulsed by the Filipino public. Her one style anti-government rhetorics are focused at foreign media where her DONORS can see what their money is worth. Her other bitterness is against Philippines local independent vloggers whose growing, sustained and massive influence she ENVIES. It's funny how only Maria Ressa's voice is being heard here when the majority of the people's voices aren't heard. She's clearly very well spoken and articulate. The voice of the multitudes of Filipinos aren't always heard and articulated well but there is a very good reason a lot of Filipinos no longer believe in her narrative. She's been very self serving and knows how to spin a narrative against her to portraying her as a victim.
@Truth Wins Respectfully disagree...That part of the bible was altered... Luke 5:32 Jesus came to call the sinners not the righteous.....This is what really happened, The people chose to free Jesus instead of Barabas but Jesus wants to save Barabas so that he can have a chance to repentance....
@Truth Wins Using that argument, Jesus also hung out with traitors, stealers and prostitutes. Even some of his disciples were those kinds of people who turned out to be leaders of the early church. If He can do so, why can't pinks accept Marcos leading?
AposCel, Maria Reza is a fierce defender of truth and freedom of the press... her credibility is left untarnished despite all efforts to put her down, she receives the highest awards and accolades for her outstanding journalism by prestigious global institutions with an objective eye to see her work. Alot of Filipinos are behind her cause to fight disinformation and fake news... the majority's voice is totally independent from what is truth, and it is undeniable that the truth is worth fighting for. Truth matters. And so does every voice that is fighting for it. I am grateful to the brave journalists who is faithful to their profession, and not intimidated by the trolls and the abusive leaders of our country. The mainstream and western media are saying that Marcos won because of massive disinformation on social media... Let's fact check...
1. Facebook Philippines is controlled by an organization (Rappler) owned by an anti-Marcos libel convict so where is Marcos' power on Facebook?
2. The mainstream and western media have been blasting Marcos for decades with their "son of dictator" narrative so why they are complaining when they have total control of the platform?
5. There is no money for the opportunist media if they chose to side with Marcos of course, foreign media will not buy their rubbish articles.
6. The people of the Philippines know better than these opportunistic and biased media that do nothing but create controversy just to keep their business afloat. The media is the most corrupt organization next to politics. Proof? No media sided with 30 million voters..
7. Marcos winning is a testament that people are more powerful than the US-funded mainstream media... Their decades-long effort to stop Marcos from returning to power failed miserably.
Losers always find ways to make excuses...

So let me get this straight:
Marcos total combined budget in his 20 year rule:
P600B (numbers according to Rappler)
Achievements: Built Heart Center, Lung Center, National Kidney Institute, Cultural Center of the Phils., Nayong Pilipino Park, People's Park in the Sky, Folks Art Theaters, National Arts Center, PICC, San Juanico Bridge, over 200,000 housing units under BLISS program, 20 power plants, build/improve roads and highways, Light Railway Transit (first in Southeast Asia).
Cory, her supporters, Ms. Ressa and the western media: Marcos is CORRUPT!!!
Cory Aquino's total budget in her 6 year rule:
P1.3 TRILLION (again, numbers according to Rappler)
Achievements: Changed the constitution, Renamed Manila International Airport to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Built monuments of her husband in many public spaces and renamed some schools in the country after her late husband.
Cory, her supporters, Ms. Ressa and the western media: Marcos is CORRUPT!!!
Am i missing something here? I think a lot of people got duped. :D
Yes you missed one critical thing…With her 1.3 Trillion budget…They printed a lot of P500 bills with her husband on it in 1987, which led to the ridiculous inflation!!!
Cory, Ressa and media : “Marcos is corrupt…”
Actually you are missing quite a lot. Marcos borrowed heavily from the world bank to build that infrastructure you mentioned and had no clear plan on how to pay that money back. This problem was compounded by the fact Marcos had installed his cronies who lacked the qualifications to actually do the job they were assigned and took kickbacks for each of those major building projects. As a result the national debt rose from $360 milllion in 1962 to $28 billion in 1985. His last 5 years in government saw negative GDP growth year on year and soaring unemployment rate. Apart from what you mentioned of Cory Aquino's achievements she also managed to grow the the economy and return to positive GDP growth. Unfortunately for the Philippines, this debt and systemic corruption throughout all levels of government institutionalised by Marcos and his cronies has held the Philippines back meaning more people have had to live in poverty for longer.
@@Netizen1972 It's true the national debt rose significantly from 1962 to 1985 but looking at hindsight, those infrastructures that Marcos heavily borrowed money for, are still in use today by the filipino people. How many years has it been since these projects were put to service? more than 36 years? isn't that a very very good ROI for a govt project? The systemic corruption did not end when Marcos left because when Cory took power, she brought with her, her own set of cronies. See why 'Kamaganak Inc" or "Relatives Inc" took over the philippine economy during Cory years. And that has been the precedent ever since. Every new administration brings with them their own set of cronies. And only a fool would tell you that it's not as bad as it is today as it was back then. Corruption actually become worse in all levels of govt when Marcos was ousted. Anyway, i still don't get why the west, MSM and so many Cory supporters blasts Marcos for corruption when Cory couldn't account for the P1.3 Trillion pesos she spent on her 6 years of presidency. That's US$26 Billion in today's exchange rate spent in 6 years. And we blame Marcos for raising national debt from $362M to $28B in 23 years with so many projects? If the Marcos years emptied the govt coffers of any funds, where do you think Cory got the P1.3T if not for more borrowing? She is as guilty of all the wrongs that she accuse Marcos of doing and it is as clear as day if looked at without any political prejudice.
@@berniepascual4094 The problem in the Philippines is that so many people including yourself are getting their information from propaganda outlets masquerading as news. This fake news is not subject to the same journalistic standards and integrity as traditional media and therefore is often unverified and rarely fact checked. A simple fact check would have revealed that the national debt under Corazon Aquino never reached P1 Trillion and in fact most of that debt was incurred by the Marcos dictatorship (US$28 billion). How about great infrastructure like the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant?
