"If you don't have facts, you can't have truth. Without truth you can't have trust. Without these three things we have have no shared reality, we can't solve any problems, we have no democracy"
Thank you for writing that out for me. Seriously. I was going to go back and write it down but now I just took a screen shot of what you wrote. It's an immensely important statement.
Eh. Unfortunately we can trust liars. Without the ability to discern fact fiction opinion and be led blindly... It's also Education in being able to discern especially those educated in lying and getting you to believe the art of the lie. You don't need truth to trust in fact I've discovered many people prefer the lie over the truth
@@charlesmitchell9690 I always thought the truth was important, until just now when I read a liar lie about the truth not being important. Truly, you're spreading important information (sorry - that was a lie, I actually think you're the worst)
@@perpetualgrimace well it's certainly better than Colbert looking towards an island in the Pacific fir how democracy crumbles of course calling the FBI the presidency in 2010 didn't exactly workout either neither Did joining the military expecting the military to take a real deep in depth view of what I have been up to for over 20 years. Ya know I remember when Syria Libya and Egypt lit up as well as if this is the first time social media has played a prominent role. Before social media the tv radio newspaper and of course educational institutions books etc were used. That of course takes you back to WWI WWII and theocracy
@@resw5394 I'm from the USA that is considerably inaccurate. It isn't simply majority rule. We have States with their own laws as well as Federal Statutes. Federal Statutes can't be simply overturned by majority rule nor are they supposed to be ignored as such policies are supposed to truly dictate the basic laws of all within the borders to which all are sworn to uphold and defend.
That said, if Federal Statutes were to be truly challenged the amount of challenge to them aren't simply done in one election cycle. It would potentially take at least 2 or 3 full election cycles by all of the territories to block and or put in place the people to overturn such laws. This continuously creates a minority of popularity so that overtime nothing is done in a rash way and gives society time to reflect on what is going on at the elected level especially in regards to blocking or approving legislation. That doesn't mean our elected leader's or those hired to protect our freedom's have always done so. The difference is we never gave them the power to truly take away what they've sworn to defend. Unfortunately we don't always hold them accountable either especially in regards to actually preserving our rights freedoms including consequences for the attempts at removing such. One of my favorite quotes.
"What is popular isn't always right what is right isn't always popular". Our founders ensured some minority rights. It took a few hundred years to convince society including through war we should all be considered equal worthy of the same rights no matter gender color of skin and or religion.
I love it that Colbert knows when to speak and when to ask one question and let the guest be their eloquent selves. Well done. This was likely the most important interview of the year.
When interviewing someone, challenge their idea with something logical, let them explain what are likely the most common arguments and counter arguments. He did terribly this interview. It was a beautiful speech though, yes.
Agreed!! More Maria please
@@Palidine4M0O that’s but one tactic for an interview. It helps get someone talking especially when they are nervous. It helps get someone back on point if they avoid answering. It helps on live TV to keep things lively. But sometimes it’s enough to simply let someone talk.

Big love to The Late Show team for giving Maria Ressa 10 minutes to talk about what’s REAL and how fakes are continuously (yup) destroying democracy in the Philippines. She’s the best person to talk about this tbh. With her experiences living in both the US and the Philippines-despite the massive difference in distance from each other-we’re not really all that different.
Blown away by this. Thank you Maria and thank you Stephen for highlighting her work and letting her discuss it further on such a massive platform. Lord knows she doesn't have anywhere close to that in her own country. Bravo!
Yes!
She is not a filipino! She is the queen of lies!
Need to have her on again, with others who can speak such truth to power, in an extended interview. THIS is the stuff that makes The Late Show with Stephen Colbert the National Treasure that it IS!
Indeed, the show should seriously consider the extraordinary value of this guest and her appearance, and so decide to invite her to return.
Speaking of truth, the woman is convicted for libel for making up stories against a private citizen because she is in the pocket of a politician who wants a chief justice out. She herself abused press freedom and the freedom of speech. She also has a reputation at a think tank for making up numbers. Her freedom to travel issue is because she was already convicted of publishing untruth.
She reminds me of Neil deGrasse Tyson, just on a different topic.
She is presently under house arrest and had to ask the Philippine Supreme Court to be able to travel..but she is definitely brave!! BRAVO MARIA and that is why she is a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate!!

Love how the audience had this uncomfortable silence after she speaks eloquently. It's like them realising that, "Yup, it's all screwed up."

My tears are flowing freely, as a male Filipino, senior citizen , reading the comments here and watching her eloquently explain how facts, truth, and trust MUST exist together, I am so proud if Maria Ressa, and Filipino women like Atty. Leilade Lima, Leni Robredo, the late Pres. Corazon Aquino who were and have always been been in the forefront in the battles for freedom, human rights, and democracy! BRAVO TO THE FILIPINO WOMEN!!!
You must be kidding right? You enumerated a list of women who profited from either the demise of their husbands and the ignorance of the masses. How much fact is there in press releases and propaganda? Have you never heard of gas lighting? Corazon is a Cojuangco, a family who are long time cronies of the Marcoses. She had the farmers rallying in Mendiola murdered for all the world to see. Not to mention the farmers killed at the gates of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac. Her own military staged a coup d'etat all in the first year of her reign as a faux leader. Her own vice president detests her and has nothing to say about her presidency because it had unprecedented extra judicial killings that would put to shame the human rights records of both Ferdinand and Rodrigo combined to shame. Leni's husband suspiciously died on a military plane accident before he could testify on the shabu factory in Tarlac, the bulwark of the Cojuangco family. Leila de Lima's own driver and alleged lover testified against her on the drug money she received. There are always two sides to a story. You heard only one and are willing to believe it as the whole truth but it is nothing but bullshit.
The way she uses hand gestures to communicate it's so professional. Communication is definitely more than spoken words.
The british are best in using body language to express their thoughts.
oh yeah, you are right. I remember my biology teacher in the Philippines.
Her bodily gestures suggest how passionate she is.
She's a known liar. She's not even Filipino.
She worked in CNN for years before going independent.
The "bulldozer that pushed" Maria Ressa brought her to worse and best places. THIS is definitely one of those best places. Continue to hold the line and speak up. Your fight is paramount to keeping our democracy.
Only those who believe that democracy is vital will truly applaud her and I am one of them. Bravo Maria Ressa!!!

Thank you for having Maria Ressa as a guest in your show. If the majority of Filipinos and our leaders of my country dismiss her, then better have the rest of the world listen and learn from her. She brings hope to me and many like-minded Filipinos, for democracy and fighting for "the real" truth.
A part of me is worried that with this getting traction her getting red tagged will begin anew.
Hope of what? To return to the old Aquino/Yellow Administration that is just after the elite and not really doing anything for the poor? Please. And she’s talking about free speech? What she is doing is saying spreading malice about people, and guess what? Only to the Aquino’s opposition! If she’s really willing to to respect free speech, maybe she should have respected the 31 million voters that spoke for the country with their vote!

Maria Ressa and Truth cannot co-exist 😆
She can fool Americans but she cannot fool majority of Filipinos.
Her Rappler is the least truested media in the Phils. Lol 😂

Social media has ruined our moral character. We tend to be attracted now to controvesy, lies and scams.
'Social Media used free speech to stifle free speech.' Let that sink in!
How?
The world is really looking to the PH as the example of what not to do in the age of disinformation. Maria Ressa and Leni Robredo out there speaking for us in intellectual forums... they're heroes and I hope they stay safe while they fight.
Sooooo True! They are Heroes of this age Globally!. Truth Armies Here 😇
Unfortunately, the groups that oppose Ressa's Rappler will just cover their ears and call her out as a "traitor". They know they benefit from disinfo, like advertisement money on social media.
I couldn’t agree more.
Yeah, Philippines has become the paragon of every country's "do not do" lesson. Add the fact that right now the country's embroiled in a human trafficking scandal where folks are shipped to Myanmar and everywhere else for "many reasons".
One senator, Risa Hontiveros, perhaps the most visible and remaining "face" of the opposition in the PH government, has been at the forefront of the battle against human trafficking. If I remember correctly, she was also in the cross hairs of Duterte and his troll/propaganda army because of the human trafficking links with Chinese POGOS (some illegal gambling stuff).
Leni is a loser who can't accept defeat and opted to spread disinformation around the world, She is like a child that rather break the toy of her playmate when she cannot get it.
This is the most intelligent guest that Colbert ever had.
In the Philippines, she’s vilified by the dictator, his disinformation network, and army of trolls so much that most Filipinos dismiss her and Rappler. Listen how she calls them out - this brilliant journalist doesn’t mince her words. #CourageOn

I really wish Stephen had made clear that she is in danger from her government. While she is on this book tour she's safe, but as soon as she goes home this beautifully insightful and courageous woman will most likely be arrested, found guilty of trumped up charges in a kangaroo court, and imprisoned for life. She could easily stay and seek sanctuary anywhere she wants in the west, but she will never stop fighting, and is willing to be a martyr for democracy if that's what it takes. Check out her interview with CBC News if you want to know more, sorry I'm old and don't know how to post links.

Are you actually in the Philippines? She’s not in danger lol. She’s just good at playing victim and it’s one of her tactics to malign the current government, because it’s not her party. Stop falling for this woman’s BS. She says she has no freedom when she is the one writing malicious articles one after the other. She just has no audience in the Philippines and that’s why she’s abroad playing victim.
You must be living in your own bubble too much to ignore how the government repeatedly harassed her by weaponizing law. Regardless of her situation, the truth remains and the evidences she presented tells the state of affairs of democracy nowadays.
Her prominence in the world stage will keep her safe enough….there wont be any attempts on her life anytime soon, her freedom is whats at stake as the present government will try to break her, and knowing how broken and corrupt the justice system is here in this country, she will have to hold the line until the people wake up.

With the fierce battle for viewership, most traditional news outlets have diversified their businesses to include online channel - from just mirroring their main channel, to now a stand-alone business. The first to adapt always gets an advantage, but credibility is built with consistency, fair and balance news.
And with a 60% high trust, CNN Philippines captures the high trust rating top spot. GMA7 and Philippine Daily Inquirer round-up the top 3 spots as the most trusted media outlet.
While Rappler and ABS CBN (online) garnered the highest total low trust ratings.

Proud to be Filipino looking at what mature intellectual, sociological and political discussions sound like. Many Filipinos have lost this capacity to argue about facts by their own choice. And we are damned by that propensity.
Our poor educational system has damaged us. And to think we were the first country to offer a doctorate program in Asia. Decades of corruption have regressed us back a hundred years.
As Filipinos we are damned by our inability to be skeptical. Unfortunately poor economic status will do that to a population. The more time you have to devote tending to your basic needs the less time you have to ponder the sociopolitical landscape.

@@talwyn_cc I'm a Filipino in the US though. She's very much admired here! In fact I saw her speak in Baltimore in front of a fairly large and largely American crowd. Mga brainwashed Pinoy lang namin sa tin ang naninira sa kanya. People there are being willfully ignorant of history. So it really depends what site you comment on. Sadly andaming trolls sa tin! Nakakahiya at nakakasuka!
@@utubefreshie Sad and true.
People from the Philippines don't appreciate Maria Ressa as much as she deserves. Too many lies have been said against this woman. Too much backlash for a supposed "unimportant," "unreliable" source.
She is not a filipino! She is the queen of lies!
Nope
She a hypo
Facebook is to blame and I have read and seen examples of the fear and hatred that it spreads with impunity against her. .I am Filipina and I admire and am so proud of her imtelligence, her principles and her courage in standing up to Duterte and powerful figures like him.
I believe her! I like her. Am a Filipino.
What an amazing woman and interview, hadn't heard of Maria Ressa before this. Thank you the Late Show for having her on.
Based on this interview alone, I'd say Secretary-General of the UN material.
Wow! I could listen to that woman for hours and never get bored. What a brilliant mind!
This woman needs a great platform of her own.
She already had one called rappler that news platform was so biased when it comes to giving news that way thier banned at the phillipines
@@solance6981Tell that to the Pro Marcos media outlets. I'm sorry if you get triggered that the things your cult shoved on your throats are revealed to be lies.
@@solance6981 bias? it was the only credible source of truth during duterte admnistration!
Listen to this book. She narrates it. It is important for everyone to snap out of social media influence and back to reality. Same with Rachel Maddow’s Ultra series. Very very important stuff.
@@solance6981 you're a prime example of her point about lies become truth when you say it long enough. I'm pretty sure you believe that rappler is biased because of social media as well, since a lot of "free speech" says that theyre biased more than the voices that says that they are not. So, now the accepted truth is that they are biased because it keeps the hate growing, hence more scrolling in social media.
Wow that was such a complex topic and she has managed to decompose it for the layman clearly. Her words are simple but powerful.
right?
She's great! So glad she won the Nobel to call attention to her work ... that book sounds like a good read, too.
She can fool the world but she cannot fool majority of Filipinos.
Her Rappler is at the bottom of the trusted brand(media) as surveyed by Oxford and Reuters, making her media least trusted. Lol
i totally disagree james. Which 'work' are you talking about? Even her very own rappler which is considered as the most least trusted media organization in the philippines.
Sadly, we have a very immature population in the Philippines. Anti-intellectualism and slave-mentality is rampant. Others will even defend corrupt politicians to maintain their precious "status quo" - an "us" against "them" narrative where intellectuals and critics are blamed for the country's plight and considered as public enemy #1. Charlatans can play with this vulnerability effectively because of social media.
See Rodelia's comment for example, that's a brainwashed pawn right there (I wonder if she's one of those paid trolls or if she's just playing dumb for free.)
It's easy to say for those foreigner here. But majority of us Filipino. Don't trust this MARIA RESSA.
don't listen to these dds/apologist trolls replying to you... it is a good read
If all Filipinos are as enlightened as Maria, our country would be top not only in ASIA but the World. The country would not be bleeding for the politicians gain.
yeah no. we will be under the america again.
I agree but I think proper education is vital.
So u want every Filipino to be tax evaders??

Truly profound. One of your best guests ever.
I am grateful to Maria for making the rounds while here in the US and getting the information out a little more.
Well she can fool Americans but she cannot fool majority of Filipinos with her rhetorics. Lol
Her Rappler is at the bottom of the most trusted brand (media) in the Phils, making Rappler least trusted.
This is one of the most serious guests that I've seen on this show. Every word that Maria said kept you silent and waiting for more. Amazing! Come back in a year please, Maria - if we're still here...
I love her stand for the truth and democracy

This is the most important guest anyone has ever had! Her words are the messages that need to be on loop and repeated instead of all the lies
She is not filipino but an indonesian that build business name rappler in the philippines. Having lose multi millions of dollars , of course she is very devastated. She wants to get it back even if it means to spread misinformation to the filipino people.
She is biased .... always speak big words to sound smart... there's saying: if u cannot explain it to a 5 yrs old then u dont know what ur talking about.
Buy she's a LIER, wasn't she!? duh🙄
@@noexcuses5524 I'm sorry but if you need things explained to you like a 5 year old, then you were obviously not paying attention in school. You are obviously a troll assigned to spread misinformation about her. It doesn't matter where she is from, she is simply speaking from her own experiences about her job as a reporter and that is what I can get behind. More reporter's experiences and less youtube comment trolls.
@@kazumikaimeymitto2870 yes she is a liar. Where did she get the 60% statistics? But the truth is only 38% are authoritarian.
@@noexcuses5524 because that’s what the Philippine Government has been feeding you and all its trolls on social media. This is a prime example of what that lady has been saying. Youre a victim of behavior modification. Get off Facebook and Tiktok, lil bro.
I'm going to read her book for sure! We need more critical thinkers now more than ever.
I would also suggest for you to look up Wilfredo Keng and what Ressa did to that man
She is such an impressive, original, eloquent communicator. The Philippines’ treasure.
She's always spreading fake news here in the phillippines

@@marksantos5396 😂😂😂😂 Are you a clown or what ? ..
Duterte and his cohorts spread fake news , hate , bigotry against critics
What an amazing woman! We really need to pay attention to what she's saying!
I hope more of my fellow Filipino citizens listen to her despite how they see her personally. I guess it’s sufficient enough to say that people’s views about her has been shaped largely by malicious actors in social media, robbing people the ability to think critically and objectively. She has been harassed tirelessly in the past 6 years and it’s admirable how she remained standing through it all.
Lol and now she's a victim? Stop the BS. She was never a victim. The real victims here are the likes of you making it look like she was oppressed in the Philippines when she never was. She ain't no saint like you're selling her to be.
Unless the Philippines actually transforms into a society where people are educated to think critically and not believe the first thing they see online, the society will always be beholden to malicious actors. But unfortunately, the Philippines love their politicians as celebrities and entertainers, and they are very much worst off because of it.
For so many years. We have given her that opportunity. I even read most of article coming from that CRAPPLER. And made us realize how LIAR she is. That's it

I agree, we need more people like her that are able to communicate and explain the way she does!
I am so glad she's heard in such a platform like this. Many are against her because she speaks so intelligently, and her words are swords that cut their greed to its core
It is not about how inteeligent she is. It's about her telling lies using her intellect as a tool in diverting the main issues why she was being sued and later found guilty not by the Philippine Government but by an ordinary citizen which she partially damaged the guy's life using a wrecking ball of lies, made accusations through a news media that she actually own. How can she even say she is being deprived of Freedom of Speech when she is travelling all over the world promoting and telling bad stories and unbelievably bad reputation about our country for the past 2 decades. She is supposed to be in jail by this time because she was found guilty but clearly, she is free to roam around the world making the USA and Europe as her personal backyard.
What a brilliant woman. And she explains her understanding so clearly. You must have her back on Colbert. I'm can't wait to read her book.
Maria Ressa hits the nerve of contemporary democracy's problem. One can't have facts without truth backed up by data.
