But Ace didn't have the Supreme Luck of Kings for lightning to strike, or whether to go haywire to save him, and so he died against Akainu, what Ace did is exactly what Roger would have done, and has done, only Roger survived it all. Roger wasn't egoistic when it came to his goals, he was willing to put his pride aside to achieve them, this is why he prostrated himself to Whitebeard, his rival, to ask for Oden. Can you imagine say Mihawk, doing such a thing? it's unthinkable. Who else prostrated themselves before a Worlds Strongest title holder, in order to achieve a greater ambition? Zoro. Zoro bowed down to Mihawk essentially his Rival, the man he wants to surpass, for the sake of a greater goal, and put his pride aside.

The confusion many people have is that it was stated that Roger and Garp joined forces to wipe out the Rocks pirates, many confuse Rocks Crew with Rocks himself, but in statements and manga panel, only Roger is showcased and stated as being specifically Rocks foe at godvalley source chapter 957 sengoku statement and chapter 1096 reinforces that statement at the end of godvalley chapter, Roger is in Xebecks way and soon after that haki sparks come off the island ,which showcases Roger 1v1 Xebeck and WON not only that but he left with loot and baby shanks chest off the island, which i doubt a concious Garling would let happen unless he was already taken out or incapacitated before Roger and Xebeck clash, which goes into my next point. The GV incident took place over a couple of days which means opponents swapped left and right and a lot of rivalries likely formed there as well, Garling likely got his tournament in a way, it`s just that he wasn`t the winner of it ,Roger was.

And that led to choose Luffy over Ace once the former managed to take the power accidentally intended for the latter, whom he likely resented on some level for being the actual son over him. Buggy has severe issues over Shanks being the favorite but then Shanks seemingly gives up- making his inferiority even worse and that made him less motivated to do anything. And Ace, the person he named after his sword, his birth child with his lover, and the person he predetermined to be his successor- having birthed him for this purpose in the first place- has such identity issues that it led him to his demise
