There is indeed endless things to talk about regarding knife defense. I have been training in Filipino martial arts for the last 3+ years, so I am by no means an expert, but I am taking you seriously because you are willing to test things out and think about what you have learned. Btw, it depends on the system you are learning, but there are some more popular systems that go pretty deep into knife vs empty hand. Knife vs. knife is good if you can defend empty handed and then get your knife out. But there's too much to talk about there. Back to the main point, most people just say "dude just run away" or "that's why I carry a gun". Though true to an extent, there are infinite amount of flaws with those two statements. Exactly what you said, what if you're already in a fight and suddenly you're on the ground with a bad guy and he draws a knife. Or what if you're with your elderly father who would break his ankles if he tried to run? Or what if you're stuck on a moving train and can't escape? You can say "dude just run" or "I'll just shoot you", but are you really of the mentality that that's all you need to know and you will just do that if something happens? I am of the mentality that if your answer is yes, then godspeed, good luck to you, have a nice day. But if you are listening to what I am saying enough that you are wondering "hmm... is it really that simple and easy? I don't know if I will actually do that", then I would suggest training as much as possible. There is no perfect knife defense, just defense enough that you can survive and get away. Your best chance to get away by training your knife defense system to the best of your ability. What if you run and he runs after you and now you have to fight to survive all exhausted? What if you're not fast enough on your gun draw and now you're dealing with a knife up close? What if you didn't bring your gun that day? What if you did leg day last night and you run as fast as your attacker walks? Seriously, I'm not trying to be a smartass, these are things I think about. Be real with yourself and think about all possibilities where you may run into a knife attack. Are you alone? Are you in a crowd? Are you in a club? An elevator, outside your hotel room, at the ATM? Can you sprint without falling when the wobbly leg hits you? Can you run away from 2 guys? 3, 4, 5? I've witnessed a 5 on 1 assault before. If you see a knife, you should run. But can you? Where's the harm in learning something that could save your life? I train knife in FMA, but am I going to stay and fight when I see a knife? Hell no. If I can run, I will, but once I start running, I am going to be prepared for all possibilities. Are you prepared? Btw, training regularly and against people bigger and stronger than you, helps you get past "freezing up".
You know I signed up for the knife defense course in fight smart guy the guy (trav) showed us how to defend against the knife and it was almost the exact same technique you guys showed on the first one except it was a counter you do a boxing parry on the knife attack and then you send a counter cross to there face I was searching up more on the topic when I finally ran into this video to be honest that was best one I seen yet rather to go head to head with a knife attacker that would be dumb but when you parried the knife and ran safely I can actually imagine how that would work in real life! But yet again spectacular video ❤
Thank you!!! There will be a follow up video. Not the next upload, but probably the upload after that. My other coach was not satisfied with the parry and pop method.
2:37 This actually happened to me. It wasn’t some thug on the street at night. It was my wife’s grandmother who had severe anger issues, to where it was almost a mental illness. We were arguing one day and she pulled a knife from the kitchen and came at me with that exact same middle thrust. Luckily I had been training for over ten years at the time and was able to place her in a wrist lock without injuring her. And that’s what people don’t train for, is putting people in joint locks without hurting them. It’s not as easy as it sounds. There is one thing I got from that incident. What helped me was the sheer repetition over that ten years of the basic techniques. I cannot stress that enough. You have to train everyday with repetition to not panic when the time comes.
best knife defense technique in my opinion. -Wear a good leather jacket, avoid London. Kind regards from a judo blackbelt, former security/forces guy. Also FYI - when i have had to deal with knife wielding morons.. the parry and pop was my go to - but you dont always have to move away from them.. you can make them move away from you as well. its called a 'keep' - and can involve aggressive shouting too. a quick leg sweep or very low kick (with the parry can work too) - and helps you make distance by unbalancing them or slowing them up. I was trained to parry then 'pop' backwards at a 45 degree angle away from angle of attack as that makes it harder to follow up - both distance and angle, obviously this requires room so not always possible.
@@driver3899 general case: either leg and either leg. front for a little more speed, back for a little more power striking the inside or outside or front of their leg.with the bottom or inside of your foot. Its very versatile, can be used in many ways. If low kicking with the parry then its opposite leg to arm for you, and nearest leg for opponent. Aiming for the ankle or shin bone or just below the knee. All hurt like hell and can disable some one easily. in a 'street' scenario your foot is armoured too with a shoe or boot. you can even rake the soul of your boot down their shin or side of shin. you can also end up stepping on thier foot too for bonus destabilizing. kicking the knee from the side can easily dislocate it (inside or outside). kicking it from the front (just below the knee) can break the joint. Preference the arch of your own foot to sweep, the heel to break bone. Recommend practice vs a wall - just low kick a wall with the bottom of your foot from an open hip position - so the inside of your foot is facing upwards (or upwards at an angle depending on your stance and body) when you have mastered that learn to drop your weight slightly on the standing leg and rotate the hip forward with the kicking leg as you do so to really feel the power. Hope this description helps! stay safe.
Agreed 👍🏼 100% . But you have to defend yourself , not doing anything at all is not an option . And yeah, 99% unarmed self-defense techniques against armed attackers don't work . But with some luck and a textbook attack, you could get lucky if you react in the right way against a knife attack . But then again, it is 99% luck and 1 % doing the correct thing at the right moment 😅 .
nothing in this world is perfect, but nothing has to be, either. Many people cannot outrun their attacker. You can have kids, a small wife, etc, who you MUST stay and defend, an infant that you can't just drop or toss-away. You can be elderly, handicapped, or just sick, exhausted. He can have you cornered. Sometime, you have no CHOICE but to fight the jerk. If you can throw something into his face and have REAL kicking ability, you can take a knife-wielder pretty reliably, If you keep your kicks at knee or shin level, he can't cut your leg and even if he DOES bend and/or crouch fast enough to do so, that will probably just put his face right where you can drive your fingers thru his eyes and into his BRAIN.
