To all the foolish people who say Dylan cant sing, they need to take a listen to this...his voice is clear as crystal, strong and unique. Nobody could sing it better.
I know! I was just thinking that. I just laugh at those people in comments saying with such authority that Dylan had a terrible voice. It's a balm to me. I read Joan Baez saying he was a marvel to her, the things he could do with his voice.
The last 35 years he does not sing but makes the sound of an astmatic raven with laryngitis, he makes horrible sounds which seem to originate from beyond the gave, raping his own songs ... It's the worst 'shot' voice in music industry.
I’ve been listening to Dylan for thirty plus years, and only just recently heard this for the first time. As has happened so many times before, I had to stop what I was doing, and softly whisper, “ Oh my God “……
I'm 74 and now in a care home, but Dylan's music is here with me, nearly 60 years after The Time's They Are a Changin' first spoke magic from our ancient radiogram. This song, though, I'd never heard until half an hour ago. And there are people who say “He can't even sing”. My God! Just listen, just hear this.
I've been listening and playing on my guitar.Bob dylan's music for fifty years plus, Not familiar with this particular song, Feels like my new favorite
Yes, 'No Direction Home' was the first time I heard it. Played in full, un-edited, at the end of that film. Credit to Martin Scorsese, who certainly knows what is of value. I was transfixed, in tears - what an extraordinary, beautiful song. The tune derives from the Scottish traditional, 'O Waly Waly'. And Dylan's brilliant re-interpretation of rhythm, and his lovely, haunting lyric, take it to a whole other level - a masterpiece. I'm Scottish, and am so pleased that Bob Dylan has found, and created so much ( eg 'A Hard Rain's a gonna fall' ; 'Percy's song' ) from old Scottish ballads and tunes. As a fine Scottish performer/ songwriter recently said at his concert, " I feel privileged to be alive, at the same time as Bob Dylan".
My mom loved this song. She never knew about it until I watched the doc on repeat She said it was her favourite Bob Dylan song. So, when she passed, I recited this at her funeral. Like to think she "heard" it. It's gorgeous. Beyond description, really.

One of my favorite songs - not just Dylan songs. Written in 63 but I don't think released until later. Played over the closing credits on the Brit tour DVD
This song was shelved for more than twenty years, except for a performance at Carnegie Hall. Less than two years after this was recorded, "Like a Rolling Stone" slipped out and squalled its way up the pop charts (the Beatles kept it from the top spot), firming Dylan's position as a pop star. "Like a Rolling Stone" was a 60s testament; this song, with its traditional form, its clarity of expression, is a timeless work.
One of Bob's absolute gems from the 60s. He was only 23 years of age when he penned this down in 1964. The lyrics here, although I have no claim on them other than a wish to share. I love so much of Dylan's music, but this is probably my favorite song of his, my friend put this album on, and I was like who is this? Been a lifetime fan ever since
This is such a lovely, lyrical song. My favourite verse is: 'I stood unwound beneath the skies And clouds unbound by laws The crying rain like a trumpet sang And asked for no applause.' To me, these lyrics are connected with (foreshadowing?) some of the ideas from Mr. Tambourine Man written just a few months later. Especially the lines: 'And but for the sky there are no fences facing' and 'To dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free' from Mr. Tambourine Man transport quite similar images (in my opinion at least).

I have always loved this song among his countless other masterpieces. I absolutely love the vocal delay on 'The ocean wild like an organ played'. beautiful timing.
I always loved this song. Dylan is special. Heard a version of this on a Tim O'Brien album, " Red on Blond " recently. All B.D. songs and he does this one. It's a fantastic version. I love singing this song alot. One of my favorite songs.
Profound. The lyrics of this song remind me of the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi . Master Dapple said, “My, isn’t that a good question you’ve asked, Ziyou! Just now I lost myself. Do you know? It’s certainly got the same stark impending sense of imminent doom as many of the other songs on that The Times they are a Changin’ album such as When the Ship Comes in and Ballad of Hollis Brown, etc
Couldn't make out the stage in Liverpool. My eye's eh! Sat between two heavy people. My knees knocking. Went for a break and missed watching the river flow. Why well. You gotta laugh 😂
Asked about his incredible inspiring songs he wrote between 62-68 (60 min interview),...how did he write them? Dylan said...They just came to Me. "I was just the Medium they 'passed-thorough'.
It was a great choice to end the, _No Direction Home_ documentary with this song. Bob singing about how it is hard to write a song that matches the primordial powers of Nature. The silent footage of the people cuing up to his show shot from a car is strangely haunting, simpler times about to get complicated as the decades have driven us on to the Apocalypse, the Revelation of our Cosmic Creator...
This song was written and recorded at the same time as The Times They Are A'Changin album. For some unknown reason Bob left this incredible song off of the album. It was already a great album, but this song would have sent the album into the stratosphere! I'm just guessing, but the album was his most political album and maybe Bob didn't think this lyrical and mystical song would fit in.
This makes me think of Sandy and Jeanie Darlington in the Bay Area, 60s, who did this tune better than anybody... Sandy on Guitar and beautiful Jeanie playing perfect old-time fiddle. Their lyrics were a little different and better imo. Unforgettable! But those recordings are now long gone... that was several lifetimes ago... one of their verses: I looked down on the river then and saw a TREE struck down, that once had grown in some great wood, Now the sea would be its home... Lay down your... etc.

pure poetry,
This is such a lovely, lyrical song. My favourite verse is:
'I stood unwound beneath the skies
And clouds unbound by laws
The crying rain like a trumpet sang
And asked for no applause.'
To me, these lyrics are connected with (foreshadowing?) some of the ideas from Mr. Tambourine Man written just a few months later. Especially the lines: 'And but for the sky there are no fences facing' and 'To dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free' from Mr. Tambourine Man transport quite similar images (in my opinion at least).

I agree that this is a foreshadowing of "Tambourine Man". Both songs are fundamentally mystical.

Most of his 60s songs are great..
Restless farewell is one the brightest gems of history of music . And "Lay down" is a gem as well
@@badseed86 Right bro, but the broken rhytm gives very well the wonderful idea of a sad soul
It’s certainly got the same stark impending sense of imminent doom as many of the other songs on that The Times they are a Changin’ album such as When the Ship Comes in and Ballad of Hollis Brown, etc
From the first time I heard Bob's rendition in the early 1970s I always wondered why it was never released/included on any of his Folk albums?
Couldn't make out the stage in Liverpool. My eye's eh!
Sat between two heavy people.
My knees knocking. Went for a break and missed watching the river flow.
Why well. You gotta laugh 😂
The Carnegie Hall version is an absolute gem.
Yep. It's really the best of the versions he did I think. It's played over the closing credits on the DVD
Agree. I love that performance. The guitar gets more forceful as he moves toward the latter verses. It's just magnificent.
Asked about his incredible inspiring songs he wrote between 62-68 (60 min interview),...how did he write them? Dylan said...They just came to Me. "I was just the Medium they 'passed-thorough'.
I love to go away but I can't. I find it difficult to stay away. Please believe like you once sonf
It was a great choice to end the, _No Direction Home_ documentary with this song. Bob singing about how it is hard to write a song that matches the primordial powers of Nature. The silent footage of the people cuing up to his show shot from a car is strangely haunting, simpler times about to get complicated as the decades have driven us on to the Apocalypse,
the Revelation of our Cosmic Creator...
Thath man is strong
Thankyou been on a stupid hunt it’s not the one from carnabey hall but good enough
This song should have been on The Times They album.
Why was this not released?
Good.
🎉😂 never surrender
The last of leaves fell from the trees
And clung to a new love's breast
The branches bare like a banjo moan
To the winds that listen the best

CANTA DEMAIS
Nobel price literature. Why any doubts?
This makes me think of Sandy and Jeanie Darlington in the Bay Area, 60s, who did this tune better than anybody... Sandy on Guitar and beautiful Jeanie playing perfect old-time fiddle. Their lyrics were a little different and better imo. Unforgettable! But those recordings are now long gone... that was several lifetimes ago... one of their verses: I looked down on the river then and saw a TREE struck down, that once had grown in some great wood, Now the sea would be its home... Lay down your... etc.
hey thanks for this post ! great stanza.
Track on the Byrds second album ( Turn,Turn,Turn)

Interesting that's where he is n his area of so called expertise. Of course I didn't go. I just want away from here. The joy of Wales waning since I got back cos now I feel imprisoned. When I go out have to b so careful and an being watched. It's all v draining. I love u btw and so wish u were here with me in my warm bed. X

NO! No no no no no
He's not called "The Maestro" for nothing . . . .
Beauty. He sold out for $600 million. Now there are multiple crap ads attached. (Look for his car ads from 15 years ago. Victoria's Secret ad) No outside critic, that Jack Frost.
Having bought the ( inexpensive) album, no need to hear ads. Good to read appreciative reviews, posted here. It's the song that counts. And what a beautiful song: " Truth is beauty, beauty truth', as Keats would say.
@@margaretwatson5688 agreed. only pointing out that today's dylan is a shell of the one that wrote this song and that imo he is living off the one of his youth.
@@MrDrewlips get a life. Have you heard "Early Roam Kings".

Kinda tired still but did have about four hours sleep. Gonna get up and get some coffee. Irene n Mary t now coming Wednesday instead of Thursday. I got loads to do. Irene gonna come early n help me cut the grass n move some furniture. She's demented since someone nick ed annes car n their cards n her iPad while they were upstairs. The car has been located. Wrecked. It crashed into some transformer n no electricity for few hours west Belfast!. Someone bought 100+ quid hoodie on her Amazon account. Block of flats central Belfast. I think this is all being carefully orchestrated. I need to live somewhere normal where I'm not looking over my shoulder. The NI conflict is gonna re ignite. X
