I have some white composite ones and they keeo failing after 4/5 years. Amalgams on the other hand last for decades. So "enjoy" your fillings without much fear! :D

    Never had any polishing done on my old amalgam filling which was quite rough to touch with my tongue and about 3 years later i needed a root canal on that tooth. I remember the new dentist i had fixing the work said it was a poorly done filling and it put me off ever getting an amalgam filling again.

      Don't be afraid to use this in your practice in the future. Composite fillings are king now these days but make sure you invest in high quality composite fillings. Too many dentists out there using very cheap composite fillings. Most composite tubes cost $30 per 5 grams. While an average filling, without insurance cost $150-250 for a one or two surface. Depends on practice....

      For this cavity preparation (and most of this size and configuration), we use the 245 for most of the time. However, when caries are being excavated we often use a large round bur in a slow-speed handpiece to remove the carious dentin safely and effectively.

    • @mentaldental
      @mentaldental  3 роки тому +5

      Are you talking about with an initial prep bur, like a 245 carbide or diamond? That was one of the most frustrating parts for me as a student, especially on typodont teeth. The key is having a very steady hand when smoothing so you direct the bur *along* the walls you've already prepped rather than *gouging* into them and removing more tooth structure. I often would use my other hand to help steady my dominant hand when doing this part. This is something that you do get better at with time and practice. Keep at it!

    All dentists will agree - amalgam fillings are actually the most durable type of filling. I used to see amalgam fillings on patients that had been on their teeth since the late 80s. Composite has been around since the early 90s . Amalgam is still very much used in the US and in many parts of world. Amalgam really is best for small fillings but on molars, I've seen amalgam fillings take up almost 75% of the tooth and lasted for awhile but had enamel grinded down that eventually had to be replaced with a crown.

    • @YoungLatinist

      I wish Italian dentists used amalgams large scale! 90% uses white composites here, which is both weak (I have to swap them every 4/5 years) and expensive. My mother on the other hand has old amalgams and they are still intact since the 1990s.

    ...and in the EU, they dont do these fillings anymore; they dont even train to do them in dental schools to avoid contact with mercury.

    Does Amalgam create any health problem ?

      Yes it does and they are one horrific nightmare after another. Cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression, dysautonomia, nerve damage, neurological problems, leaky gut, autonomic dysfunctions that can vary, hormonal disruption, mineral displacement and many autoimmune conditions, Alzheimer's and Parkinson' s likely may be contributed to by it because it is a neurotoxin. It kills or damages nerves, hair loss, arthritis, memory problems, periodontal disease may also be likely. Those are some or most of the problems. The autonomic nervous system problems that it causes can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections caused by the urinary tract stopping for certain periods of time, digestive problems due to digestion stopping and then starting again, temperature control dysfunction is quite frightening because sometimes a person gets really cold and cannot warm up or alternatively they can get too hot and cannot cool down. It costs people people a lot of money to buy things that they need just to function properly. It could cause premenstrual syndrome and mood problems, because of changes in hormones like adrenaline or cortisol etc. It can lower IQ or reduce peoples abilities to pass exams. That is just a brief overview. The suffering caused can be immense for some people. It is known that some people have genetic differences that can give them problems with an inability to safely excrete mercury. There are many support groups to try to help people to work out what they think might be a safe way of trying to get mercury out of their system. Lots of people in the groups have worked in dentistry, some of whom keep it quiet because some might be angry at them. Also tinnitus and insomnia are very common as well.

      @@RajuRaj-if3oq Why was it ever allowed in the first place is what I would like to know too! -When they knew in the 1800 how neurotoxic it is. It is among the top most toxic things on the planet. Some , but too few places have banned it. Some only for children it is banned. Who knows really. One could speculate. Some have blamed financial reasons. There are some people in the world who do evil things. I wonder whether it may have been deliberate. ..or an experiment or for their own kind of weird, stupid fun. Some of us have difficulty in removing it from our bodies- those with the MTHFR gene thing or the PON1 gene thing in particular may have problems. It could have been experimental is my main thought. In infant school I had a good reading age, after my first filling my reading age slowed down. So much so that they separated me from my friend because they thought that she was slowing me down. My filling was put in by a school dentist interestingly- maybe it was to mess up peoples comprehension. It could be a combination of things. But I BEG people PLEASE stop using it. Never put it in a persons mouth or drill it without serious protection. I don't know the answer to your question. It is dangerous when we try to remove it too. ..whether from a tooth or from the body because it settles in the tissues. There are many support groups on Facebook where we struggle to find a safe way to get it out of the body. It is a often slow killer and it can ruin lives. ..or seriously make life very difficult at some point for so many people. I am so sorry that they are using it anywhere. Maybe people just don't learn and pass things on properly. Some midwives are still not practising Delayed cord clamping at birth for babies. Or many nurses are not giving IM injections properly or safely- it is a lack of sound education and following sensible principles. It has nearly killed me on numerous occasions , it can ruin relationships and families. It is a sneaky poison. Nickel is bad for many who have a nickel allergy too. Your guess is as good as mine. Thank you for your kind question.
