PSMSA DIY Derringer - DIY 22wmr Cylinder

- Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms vol 7 Model 2 Revolver kit from Excalibur.
These are manually turned and index on the bottom cylinder. Six 22mags won't fit, five would but wouldn't index correctly, so four it is !
Their brass cratering into the breech face makes turning the cylinder difficult after firing. I've found dropping the hammer on a fired round 3 or 4 times is enough to hammer it back down so it can be rotated again. Not a complete success, but this is a novelty at best anyway. - Спорт
Splendidly done, a fine work in progress.
Cant stop the Signal.
Thanks, I like all Homemade Guns. Even the janky ones !

The most expensive part of this build is the test firing! Cool stuff!👍
Second only to the cost of heating the shop that day.
Handsome work as always Jim
Thank you for the kind words.
@@jimafcarbon4433 would you sell me this 4 hole cylinder 22mag?
I would be so, so happy to be able to craft one of these gems. This one is really beautiful and unique. Unfortunately, I live in Brazil, the country where, if you are a honest citizen, you can't have a slingshot. Anyways, props for the hard work!! Keep it up!
The countries with the most restrictive gun laws produce the best improvised weapons!
@@jimafcarbon4433 Yes, but not all of them have such a good quality like yours! Great work! I have a question.
How do you get such knowledge? Like, with the metalwork and all? This is really an art form. Where can a person learn it from? Thanks!
Also, do you use any CAD program to design these pieces?
@SirKL all self taught. I enjoy the DIY of everything, but applied to firearms the most. Almost 15 years ago I stared acquiring metal working equipment, lathes, mills and the like. UA-cam is great for the basics, but they don't allow anything instructional for firearms related videos. Basically, I learned through desire. I wanted to make firearms so I did just that. Found some easy plans and went to work. They're not all successful, and certainly not all show pieces. I only post my videos to inspire and encourage others to take on builds of their own. The "Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms" series is a great place to start.
@@jimafcarbon4433 Awesome! Thank you for the tip, downloaded all volumes. Great will you have to learn. Maybe in the future, I will be able too
@@SirKL post some videos !
Check with the local scrap yard for tubing for a bullet trap. I use a piece of 12” schedule 40 steel pipe. It was scrap from an industrial pump but anything like that will work. It has a 5/16” side wall thickness. I used a torch to cut the face at a 45 degree opening to shoot into. Make the opening 12” x 18” or so. Then I dug a hole a few feet deep and set it in the ground at a 45 degree angle so the bullets hit the back and angle down into the tube. Filled it with sand. 20 years ago and never a problem except I cannot clean it out without digging it up. If I ever need lead I have a stash. Many thousands of rounds from 22 short up to 300 mag without even a good dimple in the strike face. Really. But 300 mag really knocks the rust off of it. Lol. The pipe was about 5’ long also.
Sounds like what I need . I have a line on some scrap pipe, so it's in the works. I'll post a video !
Fantastic job. Well done!
Thanks for the kind words. I'm just here to inspire others to take on a build of their own.
If you make the hammer tip more of a point than a flat head you can have more support material on the breach face, just a thought. great video cool gun.
I was considering making a more legitimate breech block with a floating firing pin. Overthinking a simple gun.
That is so, so cool! Thanks for the video. I have one of these old Leinad revolvers, so I'd love a new cylinder like that. My machining skills aren't up to par, though, but it was fun to watch.
They are janky, but they certainly have their appeal. This one was a kit build. Everything but the frame in the kit. Had to cut the steel and weld it together.
@@jimafcarbon4433 Oh, nice. I bought mine already built. I also have the .45-LC/.410 5-shot revolver of basically the same design, but doesn't have the external surrounding tube. Cool pepperboxes.
@halfcockedhobbyist I have a single and double barrel 45/410. I have always wanted the 22 over 410 double. I always forget they made the 410 pepper box. They also made long barreled versions with stocks.

Beautiful Work my friend. I am. anew subscriber and I am so glad I found your channel because I am doing something similar and I was not going to rifle the 2 or 2 and a 1/2 inch barrel. I believe I may cast one out of aluminum so That I can bore the 4 holes out and even though it is already for magnums i do not have faith in the mystery metal that it is made from. I am sure everything would be fine but I am not going to take any chances if it is not completely necessary...
Post some videos of your build!
Good working sir 😮
Thank you ! 👁❤️🔫
I had once posted a comment of a project for someone to make, of a rifled black powder .44/.45LC pepperbox, and posed the question if rifling was even possible or practical in a pepper box cylinder; similar to the .45LC/.410 version that survivorjohnny44 John Tewelow posted on UA-cam? Though, it didn't mention anything about rifling. I'm still interested in knowing if rifling in the cylinder would be a good project for consideration?
Sounds like a cool project. The rifling, while it'd be nice if it really works and works well, it's required to be legal, so if you get that covered, anything else is icing! I've had great luck with smaller calibers. The first 22lr I ever built from scratch is very accurate. Even the 32's are decent. I've had some good and lots of bad luck with 9mm, 357 and up. I have 410/45 build planned. Maybe you'll get to it before I do. Post a video of your project please !
Ha cool 👌 the barrel is good brass coming out easy just back different idea and it would keep the brass with out expanding much cool man
It was a cool idea. I think I'll make a whole new gun for it with a better supported breech and a floating firing pin.
Hi there, great vid thankyou. Can I ask how many tons pressure required to push the die through? Thank you!
I use a 20 ton press. It's certainly not at its limits in the process
Thankyou very much for taking the time to reply! I was going to get a 10t press but may not be enough....cheers!
I like pepperbox revolvers, they are somehow just more appealing to me than regular revolvers.
But I didn’t quite get how this one indexes. Am I right to assume that there is a spring loaded part that „locks“ into the front of the lower barrel?
Also nice work btw!
It was really interesting to watch you build that cylinder from scratch.
I haven’t done much machining, so it was my first time seeing that wheel you used to get the knurling. A very interesting process
Yes. You're right, there's a detent that indexed on the bottom Chamber.
Knurling tools are cool. For sure.
胡椒瓶,同心度就不是问题了,不错!good
Yes, these are fairly crude, which makes them easier to DIY.
Would absolutely love to purchase one of these
Not sure if anyone still sells the complete guns, but Excalibur sells the kits for a DIY build !
Excalibur?
@FriedPi-mc5yt yes, they sell kits to DIY your own. A few different models. Not sure which are still in production, but there was a single 410, a double 410, a 22 over 410 and a 22 Revolver. And a few long gun versions as well.

Was thinking if using a ball between rifling die and the rod for pushing may help to allow it to turn while broching the lands would help? I've no idea, just thought to ask
It turns on its own quite well. Biggest issue is lining everything up and pushing straight.
@@jimafcarbon4433 okay. Thanks. Thinking about a model tank barrel, more for scale effect than actual firing. Thanks for the reply
@russcole5685 some of these really cut some good rifling. But the ECM rifling method might be better for your needs. Or maybe just 3d printed.
@@jimafcarbon4433 umm. Yea, I should have mentioned, it's a steel model. A lot of lathe work.
@russcole5685 any videos of that? ECM would work well though.

Well, I ate a tub of pretzels, then I dumped sand into the tub, threw some old rags on top after eating some sand. One day I'll make a proper bullet trap.

Just need a recoil shield with a tiny gap for the firing pin with no significant gap.....
Yeah, unfortunately, being as crude as these are, it's not ideal. I'll come up with something.
Would you carry 22 mag for self defense and if so what grain weight?
I sometimes carry a North American Arms 22wmr. It's loaded with hornady critical defense which are 45gr.
@@jimafcarbon4433 Thank you for responding.
I'm only here to inspire others to take on a build of their own. Build something and post a video !
Correct method would be to do rifling after reamed bore then chamber ream.
I bore them chamber so the chamber acts as a lead for the button. I always finish ream after though.
Where do you get your rifling buttons?
Typically ebay. $20-30/ea They can be made too, but it's not always easy to get good results, so give yourself the best odds of success.
I’m curious what brand or should I say design it’s from
PSMSA is short for Professor Parabellum's Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms. This one is Model 1 from vol 7.
Cobray / Leinad made production versions of these as well. Excalibur sold many (and still sells some) different kits for DIY builds. Mostly based around 410/45lc. I have several videos with a few different versions that I have built.
cool
I'm sure the only issue is the breech, not the cylinder itself. Maybe I'll make a whole new gun just to prove it to myself.
Hi Jim, so you first drill the barrel, rimed it and then make rifling? Can you tell me please the size of drill for drilling and size for rifling button, thanks
To get the correct size, you should drill a little under sized and ream to final dimension. So for 22wmr, .218 bore, I would drill first with 1/8", then a #3 and ream with a .2180 ream. The cheap adjustable readers can be used, bit they are a little less accurate.
Same with 22lr, but finish with a .2160 ream.
@@jimafcarbon4433 Thanks. In size of rifling button? 5.5 or 5.6 mm??
@@juanmanuelherves7036 5.6 or 5.56 if you can find it.
@@jimafcarbon4433 Thanks, and chamber dimension is same than barrel?
@juanmanuelherves7036 I use a chamber ream for all my 22lr and 22wmr builds. I will single point bore a straight wall chamber if I have to, but I don't mind spending money on quality tools like chamber reams if I know I'll use them.

Hello .you make best gan
Thank you. I'm just here to inspire others to take on a build of their own!
Fire it again on the spent round and that might reverse the bulging.
I like the way you think! I did just that the next day, takes 3 times to make it easy enough to turn without breaking it open.
Do the cylinder turn when you fire it each time like a regular revolver, my phone cut off watching , the professor 🤓
No, it's old school. Manually indexed Revolver. There's a detent to make it stop in the right position. But you have to turn it between each shot. A lot of the PSMSA series designs have an antique like action. As that tends to be easier to DIY at home. Professor sounds better than the mad scientist of janky Homemade guns !
