This influenced me immensely after seeing it screened in television in my childhood- it echoes the work also of animator from the 1930’s, Mary Ellen Bute who is also on UA-cam if you live this kind of animation.
I have synesthesia, and I often try painting the songs that I listen to just for fun. Before I learned about Norman McLaren, I had never really considered the potential that comes from animating music; it can really capture the rhythm and movement that I visualize from listening to music. Just from watching this video, I can see that these two *get it*.
I caught this on tv when I was a kid in the U.K. in the ‘70s, and was blown away, especially by the fast boogie woogie in the end sequence. Now I just played it to my 12 yr old daughter, saying she can play like that if she wants to. Beethoven,Chopin and Oscar Peterson, she’ll rule the world! ✌️
The Norman McLaren films were widely sold to public and educational libraries -- that was my first exposure to these creative shorts. Years later, after libraries discarded their collections, I was able to get a fair amount of his films including a 1950s TV show he did in Canada how he made his films.
Just FYI to NFB, there's a bunch of video suggestion links and subscription prompts that come up onscreen in the final moments of the film. Ruinous to the viewing experience and I'm sure you don't want that.
We were extremely lucky to have Oscar Peterson, Norman McLaren, and the NFB, active at the same time. State-funded multicultural eclecticism is Canadian values, to me.
ALSO does anyone have any clue why the word "slut" flashes on the screen around 7:46? I'm assuming it means something in one of the languages presented, but I have no idea. Seeing it made me laugh though

o my god its so good im gonna cry ..
OMG it IS so good I weep tears of joy!
WHY UA-cam MUST ALWAYS RUIN THE FINAL SECONDS OF ANY VIDEO ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
全くもってその通り! せっかくのクライマックスが台無しだよ!!!! UA-camは芸術を理解していないらしい。

Ugh, yes. They need to remove it.

We were extremely lucky to have Evelyn Lambart too at that same time, first woman working at the NFB:)
Yes, don't forget Evelyn Lambart!!
知らなかった、この演奏オスカー・ピーターソンなんだ! どうりでカッコいいわけだ……。
This should have won an oscar!
Loved every frame of this exuberant, jazzy masterpiece!
It’s like noise for your eyes
Wonderful. Was so great to be part of the resurgence of this film at the 2015 Ottawa Animation Festival where I met Michael Fukushima.
such a good song.
Thank YOU, NFB,for these AMAZING animations!!!😉👍❤
I really like this, thanks for sharing.

After this video, you must watch "The dot and the line" (Chuck Jones). Especially, after the second song of this video.
Awesome.⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️🤠

Love it!
Wonderfull!

Very cool, very cactus boots!!
this wouldve been a really good screensaver
why would you ruin the end of the film with all the links?
although it can be taken off, youtube turns it on automatically.

A Clockwork Orange pictures??
@@pab_jer yes

Relaxing.
i googled the name dull care from the behemian grove and this came up...
DIG DEEPER
Bohemian Grove brought me here.
Fire shall have its will of thee
i feel like if we slow it down or play backwards or something wel get some sort of cryptic message
Bohemian Grove is the gayest place on earth - Richard M. Nixon
Notice how the pfp for this page is an EYE LIKE OWLS
7:30
This part is looks like a rockband but little jazz
Por fin encontré esta madre
Nice Animation!
Is anyone else here for Ms.Harrison's assignment?
Exstatic!
What are the names of the songs being played?
It’s only one song and was made specifically for the film. If you want more just look up any Oscar Peterson trio improvisation
@@graysonmcdonald8 That's a bummer that I wouldn't be able to find them on streaming! Thanks.
6:41
Any idea who’s on bass and drums?
Ray Brown and I think Charlie Smith.
@@noahmay7708 Ray Brown didn’t play with the trio until the ‘50s. I re-looked on IMDB and it says Austin Roberts and Clarence Jones.

Milk Plus subliminal msg
Milk Plus it’s Swedish just means The End
"Art"
i am now blind
This isnthe BOHEMIAN. GROVE CULTS dull care there
This is truly a wonderful piece of art.
On a more serious note, did anyone catch the four jizzing dicks at 2:24?
Or the labia shortly after, the houses near the beginning, the Christmas tree, the dog, and the word "slut" at 7:46?
I believe "slut" means "The End" in Danish. Great call on the cumshot though.
Found it, it is one single freeze-frame, subliminal messaging even in '49 !
or maybe four lipsticks ???
I really think this short animation video is talking about a man's life.......
Twin towers 3:25
Vulva...vagina at 3:24
