- Dave and Barrett listen and discuss "Gods Look Down" from the original 8-track tapes.
PLEASE NOTE: the recording date for this song is listed wrong in the video at 1990, it is actually from late 88 or early 89. In any case this was recorded before the Scream version. It was Dave's first song and he played all the instruments. Dave had already recorded many times with Barrett Jones at Laundry Room, starting with the bands "Freak Baby" and "Mission Impossible" in 1985, and "Dain Bramage" in 1986-87. From early 89 thru late 90, when he wasn't on tour with Scream, Dave recorded any played with "Churn" a band with Barrett Jones (guitar, vox), Stafford Mather (bass) and Dave (drums). It was during one of these sessions that this song was recorded.

Cool 😍😙
You should put more stuff like that, just saying!! :D
link for download this song?
sorry, no downloads at this time
the Scream version is different. This is the original with dave playing everything.
Its crazy how in the pocket Dave was at such a young age. These recordings sound great,
isn't this like the best song written by Dave?
wtf, such a gem
Yes
I remember after Kurt died I was 11 and hearing rumblings the year following Dave was doing something new how much it was needed. That Foo Fighters album was out of necessity. I remember Bush coming out and it just feeling cheap and imitation but Dave bringing the Foos was just a tearful welcoming to this then boy. I traded a Jerry Stackhouse jersey for that album which was a big $ difference to my cousin ripping myself off deliberately to get it at the time. Then doing the same thing with Colour and the Shape only being a vintage Silvertone amp the couple years later. Thank you Dave Grohl for being one of my biggest influences still all these years later from the ashes of the pyre. Your journey has been still soundtracking my life all these years.
I was 18 when Kurt died and I remember when that Foo Fighters album came out that seemingly everybody was going "What is he doing recording an album that sounds like Nirvana?"
But I was going "THANK YOU!" because as you mentioned, bands like Bush and Silverchair popped up and the Foo Fighters was GENUINE! And that's what was needed at the time. I'll have Dave fill that void than some poseur who's only in for the money.
Heck, I can say the same thing thing about Sweet 75 and Eyes Adrift, People didn't know what to make of these two Krist Novoselic bands but they were GENUINE, there was no pretensions going on.
This song is so good. I became addicted since i discovered it in spotify months ago. And loved this early version.
Laundry Room Studio: Time to release a "Songs From The Laundry Room 2" but NOT as a limited Record Store Day release!
Aww man, I wanna hear THIS version!
He was only like 19 years old when he recorded this!
I'm hearing a bit of a Soundgarden feel to the song.
Disco Duckbill yeah like hands all over or something. This could be a soundgarden song
Just here to say Disco Duckbill is a great name
Yeah for sure. I was getting a “Let Me Drown” vibe from it
By far the superior version of the song, wish that exact mix was available
So here's the subtitle help (as much as I can hear, anyway):
1:05 "I don't think my balls have dropped yet." (haha)
2:00 Dave: "What amp were we using? Marshall?" Barrett: "Did I have the Marshall then? I think I did. Yeah, no, I had the (?) Marshall."
2:41 Dave: "What's the date on the reel?" Barrett: "1990. Summer 1990."
That awkward moment when a musician is embarrassed about a recording that's better than anything you've ever recorded. lol
Better than anything he's recorded in a long time.
@ddjdd wfgggb I don't see any videos of you singing or playing any material that is yours, that also happens to be better than this...
This song is great, better than any song that Dave has recorded in the last 8 years. The riffs are so powerful!
Awesome! IMO this sounds better and heavier than most the recent FF stuff.
I have this song on my playlist it’s so good 😊👍
This guy is insanely talented and mint about it to !long live dave grohl !
This tune is on par with almost anything done by the Foo Fighters. I love this era of "punk" coming out of the 80's hardcore into more melodic territory
Awesome to hear some of the stuff isolated. Great track. :)
Same youngn He is so decided and determined. Aware of his tight direction. A programmed odyssey who cant stop. A rich legacy of the force.
Definitely need this version posted somewhere. There's something about when Dave does all the instruments that there's this thickness to the sound. And that thickness isn't there in the Scream version.
whats the difference? i seriously dont hear it.
Talk about people that were BORN to do something.
That’s such a Soundgarden sounding song.
How I miss this Dave!
The guitars make me think of Big Wreck.
Franz and Petr Stahl. Amazing musicians. Between scream and husker du/bob mould.. you'll get grohls sense of music stylings. Great musians, with great influences.
I like this song ....!!
specially the guitars
first video on youtube ive seen without a single downvote
Give it some time... lol
that one person had to dislike it, bastard
Dave was so far ahead of his time... Gods Look Down was recorded in 88..... But it sounds like Alt Rock from 1996.....
While he might cringe hearing it again... Dave's 1st is still 100x better than most crap released today. Dave Grohl = Rock Legend.
Awe man this should be on the Foo Fighters set
no bc this song is so good. i could only dream of being able to do this😭
The Reverend Jim Rota lurking in the back. Love Fireball Ministry!
Jim is the man!
It’s so crazy in 1989 he had a 2000 sound and vibe this really sounds like am Incubus song hahahaha
Sounds like a Superunknown outtake years before Soundgarden even released the album. Wow!
I still love this version, Barrett do you remember the signal path for the acoustic guitar? It's a great guitar sound.
no but it was probably a SM57 straight into my board (Carvin 2488) with some eq.
Barrett, I am in love with Dave Grohl lol I wish he knew how much I loved him :)
I really like this song!!
Please upload Wasting Time. That sounded like the coolest song out of all the unreleased demos
If i had the money id buy the rights to Dave Grohl's demo's.
This was recorded when Dave was the male version of Alanis Morrisette. How cool is that? No wonder her drummer Taylor ended up playing with Dave.
I s2g based on this and the early Nirvana recording of Marigold and the first Foos record, Dave's balls must've dropped in his mid 20s. I really wouldn't find that hard to believe.
sick!!!!!!
There's something charming about this basic, raw mix with mistakes in the performance; as opposed to what I think the Foo's overdo, and that's the extreme perfection in every single vocal take, drum hit, guitar strum, harmony, as well as overcompressed guitar, vocals and drums.
FresnoCAPunkrockMetalHardcore OldFigGang yes. I know they record analog. I still think the records are a bit overproduced, and frankly, they are almost too perfect of a band. I’d like to hear them record with Albini.
Will Dave and Barrett ever released all of his old songs for Foo fans to listen to? There was a short clip of a song after Empty Handed that sounded good! Will any of his old songs ever see the light of day?
The Scream version has Pete Stahl singing the 2nd verse..
!!!
This is a cool song
This legitimately sounds like it could be an Incubus song.
I don't think so, but anyway it would sound nice in Brandon's voice.
Maybe something off Light Grenades
Sounds more like Quicksand imo
His young voice reminds me of Brandon Boyd from Incubus.
great song!
I thought "this sounds better than his recent stuff! It sounds like old Dischord." haha That's because it's Scream.
Simply awesome Barrett - when was this video taken? Is this Dave back a bit perusing old reels for the Laundry Room 12"? Or is he looking at stuff again in the "off season" with a mind to reminiscing, or... maybe something else?
Recording sounds insane - so crisp, so clean. My orig copy of Rough Mixes (I have TR Y's cassette from Dave) is still great on CRO2 after 22+ years, but these reels (as you'd expect and hope) are even better - certainly holding up incredibly well.
And may I take a moment to squeal in delight at both Dave's comment that he "sounds like a girl" and your "embarrassment" that this was "your reel" and his name isn't on it. Like "Dude I kept this shit of you doing this solo stuff, but yeah it's mixed in with this other stuff I also kept - I'm sooo sorry..." Please man cut yourself a break I'm just dying here! LOL
For what It's worth - I'm currently working with a guy named Gabor from down those parts at the time to fill in a bit more of the history around the origins of the actual band, but all this stuff is so "One place of origin" that we're all just sitting, watching, and preying it ALL maybe comes to light one day.
That said it's more than wonderful to hear any of it, and to know that it's located, marked and sounds just incredible.
Those were pretty hard times for Dave - you were an outlet, an inspiration and a true friend. We all owe you so much.
MM
OK I see immediately it says SH outtakes - I guess that answers the when question!
1:02 moms hearing their sons 10-year-old voice
Sounds like it could have been a Soundgarden song
Soundgarden-esque biiiiiig time
Riff is Soundgardeny!
So Dave recorded this before he was in scream or is this the same version from fumble?
This is a different version than the Scream one. He was in Scream at the time but this was the first song he ever recorded on his own playing all the instruments.
Did Dave write the song?
Weenie Beenie yes, it's the first song he ever wrote
Will you (or Dave) release this version?
I dug my self in soooo deepp
Lmao. Dave of course roasts his younger self. I wouldn't expect anything else from him.
"I don't think my balls had dropped yet!" Hahaha
I’m guessing the Marshall is a JCM 800. Maybe the 2203 model or 2204 model possibly?
Porfavor pongan un link de descarga !!! Un abrazo de Argentina
The verse guitar is pretty much exactly like Radiohead's Go to Sleep
andreasbjoernmadsen well considering Radiohead wrote the song 14 years later, I guess they might have stole the riff from Dave. Nbd though, happens all the time in song writing.
Haha ouch!
I merely thought it to be a fun similarity given the fact that the tonality of the riff is quite unusual. I didn't really think I needed to demonstrate math when the songs are obviously written in different decades and one is an unreleased demo
Haha burn!! When did Radiohead break out onto the scene about 1994??
Not sure if Incubus or Soundgarden
Great demo, it's sounds way better than any Foo record
Dogs Look Up. Cheers!
i love this shit
Download Link?!?!
.
Are you guys ever going to release this?
Kind of reminds me of I Mother Earth
Sounds like Incubus.. i like it
where is this version of gods look down. the version they are playing in this. where is this version
Ben Bustamante it’s never been released, hopefully someday
I love this song, but Dave looked awkward at first. Wasn’t thrilled with it.
Are you able to release the raw track Barrett?
Not without getting sued
@@laundryroomstudio I figured so!! Thankyou all the same...at least I have the Scream version...
Strangely, I find that song to be better than 99% of stuff they've put out since.
Not that this song isn't good, because it is, but you're saying that Grohl didn't write better music than this? Really? I'm not even bother to name songs but c'mon...
Not a Foo fan. Sacrilege, I know.
Car Guy...YOU are a hater! If your not a fan, why waste ur time giving ur 'tone deaf' opinion, when nobody asked you for it? Haters are irritating 😡
Car Guy Why are you watching the video then? weirdo
Sounds a bit like Incubus.
There's no way it sounds like Incubus. Come on! It's a sin to make such an unfortunate comparison! 😒
This just sounds like One-man-supergroup called David Grohl playing and singing for the sake of music. 😁👍
I wish all the Dave's stuff recorded by Barrett Jones could see the light of the day. I hope I can afford to purchase this box set one day. 😀
hey Dave!!! nothing wrong with sounding like a girl!!!
STOP SOLOING TRACKS AND LET IT PLAY, DAVE
