  • Flowering has almost finished. I will take some time today to prune the plant before the growth really starts. I would like to keep this plant very formal.

    My bougainvillea was so weak, I thought first I am losing the plant. I prune it hard, and now... the plant is 3x bigger than before. Is in full sun all day, and I can see the plant is absolutely thankful for the cut. I will do it at least once a year. Definitely recommendation.

    Wow I realize this is 7 years ago but this helped me so much! My bougainvillea is so spindly and looks so sad it was taken over by spider mites and maybe something else I don't know but now I am going to prune it back. It almost made me cry to see you cut those gorgeous flowers off!

      Have fun with pruning... If you're uncomfortable don't go too crazy... do what makes you comfortable... even if its just one branch... then watch what happens... then trim some more... the confidence will come :)

    Have moved into a new apartment with two established but untrained bougainvillea vine-type plants. Am using your vid to fimiliarize myself with what others have done. We had a freeze which hit the plants hard and quickly. Am going to wait until there will be no more overnight freezes, yet before spring growth to trim these up. Will share a flickr link as soon as the plants are trimmed and I have decided how to train them. Am in Las Vegas, so maybe a neat and tidy overhead trellis/lattice for summer shade. The plants are well-established purple/magenta. Thanks for uploading the vid. It helps to acclimate me to this future task.

    It really helped me understand what is necessary to keep the bougainvillea small as we have it in a pot on an east facing balcony. Seems to love just a half day sun but don’t want it taking over our small balcony. Sorry I don’t know how to add a photo.

    It’s easy to grow these flowers. I cut off a tiny branch from a larger plant & soak it in mineral water. After a few days it grew some tiny leaves. I was surprised that it flourished in a plastic cup. I finally replanted it in a proper pot.

    Thank you for this. I’m a newbie bougainvillea grower in the uk. The plant is growing madly in our heated conservatory but not flowering so the pruning tip is useful. I would just like to say that a 50/50% success rate in propagation might be classed as low in your climate but it’s borderline miracle in ours 😂😂

    Hi. I have a place in Athens with a lot of pots. My bougainvillea does well. It's about 5yrs old now & I haven't really ever pruned it. I MUCH prefer the natural rambling look on my trellis to an artificially-shaped specimen. . However, all info says to prune after Winter/early Spring. My problem is that THAT is when I get blooms ! In January, the plant thinks it's Summer, even though the temp is only 5° or 6°. It's full of beautiful blooms. It doesn't bloom in the Summer ! Ha ! It's crazy. So I need to prune it to enable further blooms, but when should I prune it -- March? April? Thanks.

    All my bougainvillaes are home prapogated using stem cuttings. Keep the cutting covered with an inverted soft drink bottle which has the top cut off. A small cut on the top will help keep it from steaming up. I do this when spring has just begun.

    Great showing on how to prune a Bougainvillea vine ( not a tree as you called it LOL ) and those unsightly things are thorns as you well know. Some of us live in the eastern part of USA, north east that is, so if i could make a suggestion, tell us where your located cause it does make a difference as the time of year when to prune. If your in Florida than I suppose you have many opportunities to do the pruning, and they most likely planted in the ground, but here in the northeast, we usually get only one shot at it, if at all, cause we grow ours in pots. Winter here is not good for Bougie's as we call them. Again, great show.

    How do I deepen colour in the flowers? I bought the most stunning soft pink plant and put it in full sun but cold windy spot in winter. I now moved it to a morning sun place until noon. No sun after that but very much protected from cold and wind. How often do I water it now. Previously it was next to irrigation and was much too much.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  11 днів тому

      For Bougainvillea the color you bought is the color it will stay. However if it’s in a very shady spot. The color might be faded. Water freely through the growing season .. but during the cooler months keep them more dry.. if the leaves start to look wilted give it a drink. If it looses leaves that’s ok… it will regrow

    • @rajashreeiyer3369

      Yes, provided your cutting is thick green woody stem. Cut 6 inch pieces, scrape off around 2 inch of stem, which should be then dipped in rooting hormone or cinnamon powder or honey or aloevera gel and inserted into soil. Cover it with a cut off soft drink bottle to keep temperature constant. Make sure to cut a hole at the top of the bottle to avoid steaming.
      Water only when soil is semi dry. Good results if u do this in beginning of spring.

      @PlantzNThings  3 роки тому

      Inevitably you might sacrifice some blooms.. but generally there is a flowering season and a green season.. try to do your pruning when it's not in bloom... either way... it will create new growth points and those will eventually bloom. Creating an even more dense show of blooms

I've seen them around but started loving them when I was trying to revive a few plants where I used to live and succeeded in bringing them back to life. Anyways, I am from Sri Lanka and yes, sun and humidity year round - perfect to grow these beautiful babies. Keeping long story short, can you please advise me on how to care for a very young bougainvillea? i bought it recently and still haven't transferred into a pot. Hope you read this on time and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! M.

      They like a well draining soil... lots of sun and water... feed them regularly when actively growing... these plants are drought tolerant and don't want to stay wet. there might be times that it drops all of its leaves... keep it dry for a little while... when the rains come back they will leaf out and thrive again. some people say that the dormant period encourages blooming.

    is at bougainvilea's also so that they have been compressed during the culture. Sometimes seems so in garden centers. Generally I avoid therefore also DIY and garden center and buy my plants as much as possible from specialist nurseries, which does not work with compression means or hormonal treatments. Find the thereby the plants hardly grow and respond much faster (perhaps also is intentional, so that you can again buy a new plant). Especially with Hibiscus rosa sinensis or gardenias that's terrible.

    Its now early spring and still not signs of life, in fact the remaining branchs are not even green when i 'scratch them to see if it was green. I did what i have read by keeping it dry in a 55 to 60 degree room and sparingly water it, at least once or twice during late Fall and all of winter. When the sun comes out and in the high 60's or 70's, i put it out into the sun.

    I find that the way you pruned your bougainvillea would just encourage the tree to grow new shoots rampantly, instead of flowers. I mean the big, succulent shoots with long thorns and big soft leaves which would take a LONG LONG time to reach the stage of flowers formation. To encourage the tree to grow flowers, instead of new shoots, you should just pinched the very ends of each branches only a few centimeters from the branch ends.

      I beg to disagree,what if the plant is 1 meter thick like mine?almost empty inside and so many dead stems?i use to prune even the thick stems every year and still give me flowers during the summer.

      interesting, it's good to know so depending on the shape we can determine how we want to trim it.

      Bougainvillea is not hardy anywhere in Canada. He grows it outside in the summer, inside in the winter.

      @PlantzNThings  10 років тому

      Heather Diodati Nope, Not hardy. I will need to bring it indoors for the winter.. I will keep it semi dormant in the basement with a little light. then i will bring it outside next spring again :)

      @PlantzNThings  4 роки тому

      Not sure... possibly acclimating to its new home... both your home and the new pot... mine drops leaves when I bring it inside... if they are kept dryer the might go dormant and loose all of their leaves... but when the conditions are good again it will push out new leaves

    Few days ago I was transplanting Bougainvillea Glabra to the basket, because temperature is starting to fall out. Accidently I damaged the main root and leaves are not feeling good now. What would you recommend to save this flower? Moreover, I didn't prune it yet, should I do this now? Thanks in advance!

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  10 років тому

      trimming the plant back will help the plant if the main root was damaged. make sure to keep the plant damp (not soaking wet) for a few weeks. to make sure the plant gets enough moisture. your plant should recover just fine.
