The F-4D I worked on at Holloman AFB New Mexico from 1973-1978. A beautiful plane to work on God Bless all the Pilots that had the privilege to fly them. Phillip Stevenson.

The Luftwaffe STILL flew the F-4 with smoky J79 engines even though they installed APG-65 radars and HUD's in their Phantoms?
Kind of amazing to upgrade the plane's avionics but not tackle the issue of its worst visual ID feature -- the smoky trail exhaust at regular power settings.
Then again, the USAF was the same way with its Phantom fleet. I think they updated the electronic warfare systems in the Wild Weasels and the recon RF-4s but they didn't tinker with the engines. I believe the Navy (with the F-4S rebuilds) and the ANG did modify the J79 so that they weren't so sooty at normal power.

Imagine these beauties with turbofan engines

Look no further than the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force! The F-4 K and M models used by the UK, were powered by Rolls Royce Spey Turbofans.

    ...what's with the music !?

  • @g7usl

What a pity you assumed that we are all music lovers instead of allowing us to listen to the exhausts?
Definitely NOT the way to sell aircraft video's in my opinion.

They were like muscle cars. Not like the fragile plastic jets nowadays.
