- In part 2 Bonsu Thompson Reveals Biggie Threw Shots at LL Cool J on "Who Shot Ya?"
Hip-hop has long been admired for its ability to draw listeners into a world that encompasses not only music, but the stories and experiences of those creating it. Few artists have managed to achieve the level of iconic status equivalent to the late Notorious B.I.G. - and his final album, Life After Death, left an undeniable impact on the genre. Recently, writer, producer, and Brooklynite Bonsu Thompson took on the task of further exploring the legacy of this album and its creator with his series, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death. Hosted by Angie Martinez, Thompson's series delves into the stories behind this masterpiece, bringing together perspectives from those closest to Biggie during the final 18 months of his life.
With Bonsu Thompson's versatile background that extends from journalism to television production and digital media, it comes as no surprise that Iconic Records hits all the right spots. Delivering raw and introspective analysis on the landmark album, the series invites a host of guests to contribute their personal accounts of not only Christopher "Biggie" Wallace's artistic process but the ruthless New York rap scene that helped shape life on the East Coast during its golden era.
Over the course of the series, Angie Martinez spends five nights in conversation with some of the closest figures in Biggie's life, each sharing the untold stories that changed hip-hop forever. They recount the rise of the Notorious B.I.G., the East-West rivalry that nearly sparked conflicts, and the fallout following the rapper's tragic death, which only cemented his legacy.
What sets Iconic Records apart from other documentaries exploring hip-hop lore is Bonsu Thompson's strong influence. Behind the scenes, Thompson was hands-on and allowed guests to open up and speak honestly, providing listeners a rare glimpse into the life of hip-hop's biggest names. With a combination of knowledge and expertise, he was able to curate a series that caters to the educated fan wanting an in-depth look at the genre's evolution.
Moreover, the Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death series is more than just insights into Biggie's life. It also illuminates the unique perspectives of his peers, each giving voice to the trials and tribulations of the times. Thompson brings fresh insight into the iconic moments of the East Coast rap scene, resulting in an extraordinary behind-the-scenes portrayal of the music industry, which captures the momentous energy of a transformative moment in the genre.
Bonsu Thompson's incredibly detailed storytelling skills capture the essence of Biggie's Life After Death, highlighting his artistry and the East Coast rap scene at large. While there are several documentaries devoted to the rapper, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death stands out in its ability to bring listeners into the world of Christopher Wallace, showcasing the brilliance of his work alongside the inspiration behind it. Thompson has created a platform for sharing history and culture, allowing listeners to learn something new about icons they thought they knew well. Take the time to listen to Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death on the Roku Channel, or any other platform, and immerse yourself in the world of Biggie.

Who Shot Ya sounds like it was recorded today. Ultimate classic song will never die.
The Issue With LL & B.I.G Goes Back To The “Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)” Video Shoot As LL Wanted To Go Last As He Felt He Was The Best Out (At The Time) B.I.G, A Humble Dude And A Fan Of LL’s “Pink Cookies…” Track, Didn’t Like LL’s Attitude So The “Old School; New School, Needa Learn…” Line Was A Sub-Reference To His Initial Introduction To Uncle L! 🤝 I Can Talk B.I.G ALL DAY! R.I.P To That Man!
Well only one of them is still standing strong to this day so LL for the W.
@@BlackFaithProduction Oh SHIT!! 😳
Receipts Please????
this is what i remember being said at the time
@@BlackFaithProduction You have the maturity of a toddler. Rappers have beefs all the time, large and small. The benign disagreement between Biggie and LL Cool J over L wanting to go last on a song in and of itself doesn't make either of them bad people. Doing an end zone dance over Biggie's murder just makes you sound retarded.
I went to college (DelState) with Bonsu. Real good dude. Very happy for all his success.
My Neighbour was doing school in New York so when he came back to Zambia 🇿🇲 with all the VHS 📼 tapes man we were so updated.
Biggie took shots at people all the time with rappers he did songs with. Jay Z, Jadakiss, Method Man....etc. He was a competitor and wasn't about to let you outflow him on his own song.
LL did this for and entire album that didn't get light. His MSKYO album he went at his peers. Kane, KRS, EPMD, Moe Dee, etc. Keep in mind, the OG version of Rampage LL thought Parrish got at him with a line. On the finished version...LL responded. 💯
LL said asked Biggie why he smokes so much when he writes and when Biggie responded LL said he laughed. Biggie then goes in the booth and what does he say the “old school” needed to learn tho? That he “burn baby burn like disco inferno”… most likely it was a shot at LL. Next, LL gets a beat (originally made for Biggie) by the Trackmasters and makes “I shot ya” in response to Big’s song. I don’t usually talk about these things, but I wanted to help ya’ll out.
Maybe LL didn't give a damn. Maybe he wasn't being sensitive about the shit. LL said he know the game...ole skool new skool anybody can get it!!!! What was LL supposed to do? Act like an ignorant sensitive bonehead?
Love sway n the crew always putting us on knowledge
Sway know they’re looking to create some drama to promote this series like they did that weak album. It’s all strategic…
LL Cool J made a song called Old School New School in 2008 on his Exit 13 album, and the chorus is Biggies diss to him from 1994.
Blessings 🙏🏿✊🏿🔥
It's very clear that LL n Keith responded to Big in original version of I Shot Ya,... They continue to respond on I Shot Ya remix... Listen to the lyrics, it's there, it's clear... And Keith Murray felt a way bcuz that track was for Mary n him but Puff Gave it to Big,.. LL also wanted the track before Puff decision,... It's a clear back n forth,.. Thanks Klepto for the knowledge ✊🏿!!
bullsh*t BIG loved LL, there's a line "You know the epilogue by James Todd Smith I get swift with the lyrical gift"
James Todd Smith is LL real name, later LL sampled that line in his "Can't Think" song
Keith Murray is only on the remix to I Shot Ya. LL has the original version all to himself. KM's verse was towards Prodigy of Mobb Deep. P even revealed that years ago. Bc Mobb Deep & Keith's LOD crew damn near came to blows w one another over that record after it came out.
@@joshingram071 listen to original version again, Murray adlibs on it
We were with Keith and Jamal from illegal all the time and they loved Big. I remember being with Keith Murray and Jacob York on a meet up. No beef whatsoever, all cap.
I thought Cannibus did that by the titles ,, I've noticed many people saying stuff that happen over 25 yrs ago when i can't even remember what i ate 2 days ago 😑
I Shot Ya by L is the hardest beat ever made
🤨better than cool like that🤔better than das efx bacneffect 🗣️Not!!)
Tell me the ingredients in your drugs so I can be rich!
Lots of us who was outside in the mid '90s We thought they were shooting at each other honestly because LL came back with I shot ya
This is NOT far fetched. If you ever seen the video, "Who Do You Love" by LL Cool J, in the video the part where he says, "Yo B, why you leave your honey all alone with me. Just because you're blesses with cash don't mean your honey won't let me finesse that ass," the dude in the video is big with Versace shades driving a Benz while LL is tapping his woman behind his back riding a bike.
Man, I remember like, Dude looking like Biggie. I was joking like Big is in the video
@@kactusjaxson2965
Yeah...they have him a goatee but I can't forget the Versace shirt, glasses and Lexus car
That was actually LL's life long DJ Cut Creator.
@@Pytho_n Right, but he was with Versace shades and that was Biggies theme at that time, before Brooklyn Mint
So Biggie and LL were throwing shots at each other and 2Pac thought it was about him.. Interesting
Pac bipolar and got beat up by michael jackson
That's cause puff dropped the song right after Pac got shot
@@averyt6521 Lmaoooooooo
@@imperialstats Yup, Puff was being a jackbutt
Big and Puff heard the beat for Doin It but passed on it (it was on a beat tape that got over looked). LL snatched it up
There’s some logic to it
“Who Shot Ya” and LL makes a song called “I Shot Ya”
Big was a LL fan. I shot ya was about pac. Big and L had no issues.
@@marshallcarter4928 LL took it the wrong way too

Subliminal shots.
@Mr. Howse That's the art of Battle of Rap since 1970s, playboy. This new generation is use to someone just giving information instead of actually using your brain to decipher information. Hence, why rap is called the "The Cypher(Cipher)" ✌🏾🗽
@@ILoveTheAllCreator Them subliminals got him shot though. Meanwhile the people you claim ain’t using their brain at still here…
@Mr. Howse That make NO sense.. The same exact damn coast rubbed pac out. ✌🏾
big was just saying all the old heads better respect me cause i’m hot.. i burn baby burn 🔥
I honestly felt like "I shot ya" had a bar aimed at Biggie. Biggie on "The Points" said "I want a presidential rollie/so I crush emcees to guacamole making Robin scream holy moolie" on "I shot ya" LL said "I use my Presidential Rolex to be the bait"
Wow
Nah , that is a stretch.
Presidential Rolex was very popular back then.
Maybe, but the line right before that was....
"Rappers scared, I'm fucking up their mental state."
So yeah, using a rappers line to bait him into a beef wasn't new.
Someone need to find the LL video "All World". The only lyrics I remember was "Biggie, I know you want me to retire!".
From a Native New Yorkers point of view... the first time we heard "Who Shot Ya" or the beat that Keith Murray spit on, Mary's album "My Life", originally it was debuted on Stretch & Bobbito radio show and the last 2 bars B.I.G said was "representing for the Queen/your royal highness"
Who shot ya may have been at ll and not Tupac, but 2Pac thought it was about him, than LL. I shot ya was like a response to hit em up, and New York rappers. I Shot Ya had LL's verse and a few references by others to Tupac lyrics. -> I'm here to make a dollar out of 15 cents and... -> I'd rather be feared than loved, bc the fear lasts longer (Machiavelli reference) -> you hear me friend? (Beginning of hit em up, I ain't got no * friends).
@@Sid-ri1iy Your comment let's me know that you are a young person. No disrespect. But "I Shot Ya" came out in '95 "Hit 'Em Up" in '96. I Shot Ya was a direct call and response to Who Shot Ya, (which uses the same sample but at different intervals). If the lyrics "Old School New School Need To Learn Though" was a subliminal dis towards L.L., I would need to hear B.I.G to explain that himself and unfortunately he's no longer here to do so. So...
@overstandinggod3410
Good lord these kids think EVERYTHING stems back to Tupac
I think he meabt old school because LL came out in the mid 80's & big came out in the mid 90's & Big was letting it be known none of y'all can't f*** with me "i burn baby burj like Disco inferno"
Big didn't want no problems with LL
LL was on the remix to Mary song Mary Jane and the Who Shot Ya and I Shot ya beat is very similar! LL was the Man
Check out Lyn Collins
Put It on the Line and listen to David Porter
I'm Afraid the Masquerade Is Over

"Old school new school need to learn tho. I burn baby burn like disco inferno." Simply mean rather old school or new school I (BIGGIE) is the hottest. How don't you hip hop people not know this. I guess I am the Biggest BIGGIE fan.
I love my Hip Hop history.
Damn I thought LL was subbing Tupac on I Shot Ya
That would explain why LL`s opening line for I Shot Ya Remix is:
What the f**k? I thought I conquered the world
Crushed Moe Dee (Ugh), Hammer, and Ice-T's girls
But still, ni**as want to instigate s**t
I'll battle any ni**a in the rap game quick
Name the spot, I make it hot for you b**ches
LL was responding to Someone and Pac and LL was not beefing at the time. So it had to be Big.
So that’s why Kane didn’t reveal who it was that BIG said when he posted on IG awhile back about a convo he had with BIG saying a rapper that wanted him to go first on a song but he felt that the rapper bit styles
LL did have a line in one of his songs talking about Disco Inferne probably on Mama Said Knock You Out or Walking With The Panthers Album
Yes, I remember LL`s disco inferno line as well.
Exit 13 album in 08. The song is called "Old School New School"
BIG didnt want that problem. LL would have added another head to the mantle
Yes sir LL was the man
This was a strong rumor neck in the day
I remember the OG version of My Downfall wit BIG on the hook..No DMC
“Old school to New School, need to learn thou// I burn baby burn like Disco inferno”

Hell yeah he did. I love it lol

@justjuangoodcitizen4297 obviously you didn't hear LL's ripper strikes back track then, because that track sealed canibus fate, no matter what he put out after that it wouldn't help. Canibus is lyrical, but L picked him apart with just simple rhymes with that oldschool flow, an poor pac would've gotten spanked too, pac not even a battle rapper like LL.
Captivating convo
But I think that also why LL said:

Man Pac didn’t care if you was still cool with Biggie. They’re multiple people he was cool with that was still fuckin with Biggie.
Big basically said anybody can get it
Never heard so many words used and SO LITTLE actually said.
Sway needs to release the rest of that footage on The Wake Up Show. They’ve kept that in the can so long but we need to see ALL OF IT!! The only thing I can believe is that Biggie never saw the full Hypnotize video even tho it’s absolutely CRAZY to me that the video wasn’t out circulating at the time of his death. The album was coming out in a little over TWO WEEKS!! I’m curious with the idea that Biggie didn’t hear the project in its entirety. He had listening parties. Days after his death I doubt they hopped in the studio to do anything. These albums still have to be pressed up and shipped out so what work could possibly be done in 16 days? I think they just said that cause they know none of us were there so they can just say anything. I would question how true it is.
Man. He got so much shit.
Maybe he just didn't get to hear the final mixed and mastered version.
@@leehambleton4762 He was in LA playing the album as loud as possible. Also remember that people were selling the album before its official release date. The album debuted at 176 but it didn't count because that was before March 25th.

Why didn't Biggie put it in a short track, that, Who ya was about LL. And was before the issue, and the track it responded to.
They keep saying BIG recorded "Who Shot cha" before the Quad Robbery.. but Clark kent clearly said BIG went back and did the second verse later🤔

Rappers can spar and still respect each other
A lot of people who are younger or may not have really been following the music or had sources close to the Rap game may not understand why LL Cool J was just randomly at the recording session with Biggie…yes he was on the “Flava In Your Ear” remix but remember that Diddy was a protege of Andre Harrell ( RIP) because he got his start at Uptown Records and Andre Harrell was not only friends with Russell Simmons who was of course, the co founder of Def Jam Recordings with Rick Rubin but Andre Harrell was a former A& R director who did some producing and songwriting part time…he was also 1/2 of Jeckyll & Hyde who was managed by Rush Management…fast forward…1995, LL Cool J ..the 1st solo male rapper to go platinum and to win a Grammy during the late 80’s but at that time, he was in a career slump because gangsta rap and backpack rap was big on the East Coast..he was viewed as a commercial rapper who made music for mainly women…so he might have kind of tried to throw his weight around because Diddy was supposed to co executive produce LL’s next album but ultimately Biggie did give LL his props on “ I Got A Story To Tell” with the “You Know the epilogue by James Todd” line .
