I’ve had this knife (orange g10 s35) for seven years. It’s my favourite and most used tool. I’ve skinned and gutted numerous rabbits, squirrels, deer fish etc. cut up ten times my weight in cardboard and made countless feather sticks. It has been a constantly at my side wether on the work sight or the woods. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
dude.. that was an awesome in-depth review with excellent scenery and display of the ergonomics and use of the knife. You sold me, i will for sure be picking up one of the backpackers in stonewash to replace my "too small" real steel 130B
One of the best neck knife reviews that I've watched. Although batoning a neck knife is a little overkill. But seeing it done, adds confidence that the knife can take that kind of abuse.
I wanted to get one last year at Blade Show 2014, they were $70.00 total show price.. it was the last day of the show and I was so beat from walking all over the room for 6 to 7 hours that I forgot to go back to their booth to buy one... I'm now really sorry I forgot to go back!
Do you think you could use this in a defensive situation? Because of the large finger choil/guard? Thanks so much for the videos, I enjoy all of your content.
@@gideonstactical fantastic that is the one I ordered with the orange handles. Thanks so much. I noticed the belt clip was closed and needed to be threaded through a belt. Would you recommend the ulticlip, so I can wear it on my gym shorts? Thanks so much!
so I just picked up the tops brakimo knife cuz I watched your review and I haven't got a go out and Outdoors with it but it feels amazing. Now I'm looking at the White River Backpacker just to carry a smaller knife and I think the review sold me thank you so much.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Deshawn Ahmir i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great presentation of what looks like a great knife. I've been looking at it for a couple days now. I just may have to go ahead and order one today love it so much. I'm looking for a new neck knife for outdoors.
Thanks for the great review. It looks like a Tops MSK in the ergonomics, but with stainless steel and a sabre grind. Checks all my boxes for a nice ultralight hiking knife and/or EDC in the city.
I don't really understand all of the Izula comparisons. The Izula is a 4mm thick slab of 1095, flat-ground with a drop-point design that I'd put squarely in the "survival blade" category. The Backpacker is 2.5mm thick and made from S30V, with a design that would be better suited to bushcraft if not just plain EDC. Don't get me wrong, I love my Izula, and it's in my day bag when I'm not carrying it-but this is a very different knife, and as someone who *is* looking for a neck/belt knife with a decent steel for EDC use, this is now at the top of my list.
I would totally agree with you. A lot of people see a neck knife and think Izula clone. Which is silly. There is a huge difference between these two blades.
now that is a cool small knife. Beginning to appreciate the blades that come with high quality sheath. Got this one on the radar now, thanks man. Good vid as usual man, keep it real.
Would be great to have a Ferro rod loop connection with it. How long is the Handle, in Inches?? . My hand palm is over 9" width. Is the knife Ferro Rod Usable ? Is the Blade filed down 90 degrees for a ferro rod? @3:13 "The profile is large" I find the Sqaure bottom shape of the sheath could use a trimming. Nice neck knife though. Cheers ;-) give it a 4/5
gideonstactical My favorite neck knife is the Survival Bushpoint designed by Kulkraven Bushcraft and it is uncoated 1095 in a leather sheath. I have had pocket knives rust, even some stainless ones.
The Banshee is more "durable" with its 0.16" thick blade and thicker stubbier tip, but the Backpacker is more precise in its cutting capacity. The deep choil on the backpacker is great!
Any issues with the paracord coming off? I'm always paranoid about that, wondering if hockey tape might be better, or if there's a glue or something I could add to make the paracord not come off.
hej Aaron... as always, like the review ;) I also wanted to ask you... which one would you go for: Backpacker or Banshe? I know they are different blades, but still...
If you could just have one 'do it all knife' which also is EDC-able, would it be this or the Banshee? Or possibly another one? Looking especially at the two mentioned. Please keep those videos coming! :-) Stay safe.
I'm stuck on 3 knives. The ESEE 3, the TOPS Shango, and the White River Backpacker. Which knife has the best quality and would be best for EDC and bushcraft/light camp tasks? The Shango and backpacker appeal to me because of the steel choices, but the ESEE's handle scales and thin blade profile also appeal to me. What's your opinion?
Always enjoy your reviews! Great video and the scenery looks great. Good point about the carbon steel being more susceptible to rusting. I just picked up a Tops MSK last week and looking forward to working with it, although now I'm thinking about a stainless blade. What is it like to stand on a mountain peak at 12,000 ft? I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question. It was my misfortune (a misnomer of sorts since the experience has been a special gift) to contract a rare form of lung disease and, as a result, I'm a lung transplant recipient. I'm constantly pushing myself to live a normal life - and succeeding at it. I wonder how I'd fair at the height you've climbed? As to the knife, an incredible price, really, for the quality that is offered. I like the design and steel quality, but can understand why some enthusiasts would not care for it. It's a blade made for function and is not overly concerned about looks - or so it would seem to me. I like the knife. A good video!
+gideonstactical Thank you for your reply comment, Aaron. I have an interest in climbing. I've read some of the journals of George Mallory of mountaineering and, of course, Everest fame. He was in superb physical condition and a very experienced Alpine climber prior to his death in 1924. He states that at 26,000 ft.the atmosphere is rarefied and can require bottled oxygen - even though he himself was skeptical of the need to carry oxygen. Watching your video, I thought that your climb might have begun offering something of a physical challenge given the height you reached.
The backpacker has a bigger handle, better sheath, is rust resistant, holds a longer edge and is thinner so it slices better...I think so, others may disagree.
How about some lite wood working? I have used my (lost) izula to make some kindling (even lite batoning) to make wood for my caldera camping stove. Will the backpacker be able to do that? You haven't shown any wood work, other than some shavings, in your review. Tks

+Caleb Mullen I made a video about a year ago, that explains what to look for in a survival knife. Here are a few suggestions in the price range. Any Becker knife, RAT7, SP42, Buck Punk.
+Mr81alpo People have asked before about the price difference in the Backpacker and the Caper model with G10 scales. It’s a good question. It seems like a lot at first, but the Caper is not simply a backpacker with bolt on scales. In fact, we hope to offer a Backpacker with bolt on scales in the near future - maybe for an extra $25 or so. The Caper takes several more labor hours to complete. It has the G10 material, a liner, epoxy, and two hollow pins which are then chamfered on the inner edges - all of which is then sanded perfectly flush around the entire perimeter. Finally the scales are hand sanded to a smooth fit and finish. The extra time and materials result in the extra price. Hope this helps explain the price difference.Your friends at White River Knives
Looks like a decent little knife but the scenery was a huge distraction for me lol. Cannot wait till I'm back in the Midwest. Knife looks a lot like an Esee Izula for sure.
+gideonstactical Not trying to dog you but are you down on Esee now ? Just curious because I love my Esee 4 and was thinking of upgrading to a 6. I really like some of the custom knives you feature but I just can't justify taking funds away from my weapons. As always great review thank you.

The BK-14 with Slabs puts it in another demention as a knife, It's still a great neck knife, But yet with the Slabs it's a awesome knife but still around your neck. I like it as a skeleton.Might get scales when they come out,but not sure. For me : 10 of 10 in every catagory.
why did You change the egg of the knife. by doing so to me it dose not make the testing right and someone who might buy this knife would not be getting the one they see in this video. egg wise that is by not keeping the knife as is out of the box. it to me defeated the perps of the testing.
First, to test how the s30v would sharpen. Easy or hard. Second, 95% of all factory edges are not ideal. So, if you are serious about knives you need to find the edge profile you like and use that.
Aaron, please stop getting good knives to review. Your making me broke. So, its now on my list to try as a neck knife. I think the sheath is good until you can update. For my liking needs updating to be a EDC, so I would think not 5 out of 5 for the sheath. In order to be 5 out of 5 quality of the sheath would need to be clean design not square. Great job, just sharing my thoughts.
But, , , The curve blade I'm talking about goes from the sharpening stop to the tip as a continues curve, like my Skookum Bush Tool and now the Potbelly, two very different knives, but the same similar curve to the edge, both being alot different knives with the only similarity both perform similar and that's that they both are great slicers. Sure my Skookum Bush Tool is much thinner and a Scandi Vex which I Stropped and prolly my Fav's carver, I don't think the steel makes that big of a difference because both steel's have a tight grain my Skookum is in 3V, my Potbelly is 1095 CroVan that's what I'm talking about, but yet more so it's the curved belly. When I got my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my WarBeast, I knew right away I wanted a Nessmuk Style Knife, with the Potbelly I'm no longer in that much of a rush, sure I checked out the Bark River Nessmuk and some Battle Horse Nessmuk's, but I would like a blade lenght around 5 1/2"-6" blade lenght so prolly I might have to get a Custom and I already talked to a few guys. but anyhow the Potbelly is very similar Nessmuk looking knife, and has the Butcher Knife Characteristics. But Yeah I found a very interesting deduction and that is how great curved blades carve.

What is the chest rig you are wearing with your backpack at the beginning of the video?
Great knife for edc last ditch! I wear as necker. They improved the sheath. I paid $119.00 which is pricey, but worth it for a quality piece of steel.
Haven't ever had a neck knife rust because of sweat, if it does all I can say is there is something wrong with the knife or sheath.
+TurtleWolf Pack Interesting, that has not been my experience with my 1095 blades like the BK14 and Izula.

First, to test how the s30v would sharpen. Easy or hard. Second, 95% of all factory edges are not ideal. So, if you are serious about knives you need to find the edge profile you like and use that.
80 - 90 bucks puuuh I bough one for 150 but then again it´s 2023....
Thank the government for inflation
It sucks…$200 in Canada. Just ordered one myself.
His large size hand and his large size finger fits well lol, that’s what she said
Aaron, please stop getting good knives to review.
+Matthew Taylor Right on thanks as always my friend.
+gideonstactical what did your brother think of it? I thought I saw him using it in part of the video.
+Matthew Taylor he liked it as well. My dad, who is a big backpacker, but not a big knife guy really liked it too.
43k views, less than 1k likes? What is wrong with u ppl
carry a real blade there not that heavy!
The music is annoying and too loud.
Thanks for the feedback
I was stoked until I saw that sheath :(
The music on this was annoying and totally unnecessary.
Did you intentionally not test the fire starter notch?
+Nagol Bud Right on... I think it's called a "sharpening choil (SP)"..
