  • @Cosmo-Kramer

    Harri, thanks for the terrific reaction! You mentioned the voice-changing effect Jeff used to make his voice sound alien-like. It's called a vocoder, and to my knowledge, this song was the first time he ever used it. And he was also one of the first rock/pop artists to use it! (Btw, it's not the same thing as Peter Frampton's talk box, which he used to such stellar effect in that same year, 1976.) But this song was most definitely not the last time Jeff used the vocoder, as you've heard already on, "Mr. Blue Sky", and, "Sweet Talkin' Woman", both of which came out a year after this song.
    I know you were looking for the aliens to solve our problems in the end of the song, but while that would be great in reality, it doesn't make much of a protest song. So I agree with the way Jeff wrote it, to leave it open-ended, unresolved, with questions being asked, like, "How's life on Earth?", and, "What is it worth?". And lastly, yes, I do think you'll appreciate the song, including its music, more after one or two additional listens. Hopefully you can squeeze that into your schedule. Many thanks! :)

    The '70s was a big time for the ecology, we had it drummed into us in 6th grade. 1971 also gave us Marvin Gaye's 'Mercy, Mercy Me' and 'What's Going On?' which was the album's title track. For anyone that doesn't know: "What's Going On is a concept album with most of its songs segueing into the next and has been categorized as a song cycle. The narrative established by the songs is told from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran returning to his home country to witness hatred, suffering, and injustice." from Wikipedia.
    This is a must listen as much as ELO's "A New World Record" is.

    This is just one great song on this album. Unlike every other ELO album, every song is not only listenable but is so pleasing to the senses. I never analyzed the words too much on this song. I just love the music and how it flows and it is the start of my favorite part of this album. So many hits. This song was not on radio, many other songs from this album were the hits in this time period. But that is one reason it is so under-rated. I actually have been listening to this album just about every day the past few weeks and I'm not tired yet. :)

    Actually there was a rich tradition of altering vocals in pop songs to emulate radio reception or interference, telephony, acoustic amplifification etc.,
    I want to namecheck Gershwin for the strings inspiration and the thickness in that section is provided by a synclavier, I don't think ELO use horns.
    A beautiful reaction but I don't see the sentiments held by the OP in the song at all. The protagonist is on a mission, so he thought, to a lovely planet by all accounts, but he got Humanity to observe. What a cock up.

    I love ELO and the entire A New World's Record and Out of the Blue albums but credit should be given to the Five Man Electrical Band, famous for the 1960s protest song Signs. They had a minor hit three years before Mission, in 1973, with I'm A Stranger Here, a song that used the same alien disappointed assessment of Earth but with more pointed lyrics. You should react to it and Signs, Harri. All the best.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 2 роки тому

      Nope, Joni Mitchell's got them beat. "Signs", came out in 1971, a year after her environmental protest song, "Big Yellow Taxi".

    • @timwhitnell7145
      @timwhitnell7145 2 роки тому

      @@Cosmo-Kramer I know Signs came out in '71. I meant to write that it was a 1960s-feel/inspired protest song; it had that kind of vibe and lyricism. My main point was that I'm A Stranger Here was almost the same in theme to Mission but came out three years earlier. I'm going to look for an environmental-themed song that came out before BYT as I believe there is at least one but I can't put a finger on it yet.

      @@Cosmo-Kramer I've had a cursory mental run through and done a quick Internet search and so far haven't found anything definitive. There is Where Have All The Flowers Gone? (Pete Seeger/Peter, Paul and Mary - 1962) but looking closely at the lyrics the context is more of an anti-war song. Same for Going Up The Country (Canned Heat - 1968). It talks about getting back to rural roots but again I think it's as an anti-war song. The closest I've come so far is What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong - 1967) but it is more in the context of the beauty of nature, life and friendship and not so much a lament on how we treat the planet. I'll keep searching.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 2 роки тому

      @@timwhitnell7145 Gotcha, thanks for looking. Yeah, it may not be a coincidence that the earliest song we've come up with is from the year 1970. Do you know where I'm headed with this? What related thing, more like "event", premiered with its inaugural celebration that year?? If ya haven't guessed it yet, 1970 was the year of the first Earth Day. Now, while that would not explain Joni's song, as, "Big Yellow Taxi", came out on April 19, 1970, three days before the first Earth Day, held on April 22, 1970, it could explain the other songs that would follow in the early to mid-'70s. Marvin Gaye's, "Mercy, Mercy, Me (The Ecology)", came out the next year, in 1971. And ELO had a few songs that were written between '72 and '76 that contained environmental messages. And there's the Five Man Electrical Band. But yeah, it may've all started with Joni who was vacationing in Hawaii in '69 or early '70 and looked out her hotel window to see an enormous parking lot stretching for acres until she could finally see the Hawaiian jungle's edge. She said to herself, "They paved paradise, put up a parking lot".

      (I don't think there are earlier examples of environment-conscious JL songs, however there are some clearly anti-militaristic/pacifist songs from his time in the Idle Race: _Mrs. Ward_ , and _Big Chief Wooly Bosher_ - the latter is maybe slightly naïve in how it deals with native Americans, but it's definitely on "their side.)
