  • Boom!: Stunning footage of the Chang'e 6 Lunar Lander Operating on the Moon. Just released footage of the spacecraft collecting soil and rock samples from the Moon's far side. First spacecraft taking off from the Moon's far side goes to Chang'e-6 . Ascent stage has already left the Moon with the collected samples, scheduled to return to Earth on June 25. Here comes much awaited stunningly cool actual footage of Chang'e-6's operation on the lunar far side. Congratulations! Chinese national flag was unfurled and displayed on the lunar far side. China’s Chang’e 6 probe completed collecting lunar samples, lifted off from the farside of the lunar surface and entered the lunar orbit.
After collecting lunar samples from the far side, Chang'e-6's ascender fired it's 3000N engine at 23:38UTC on June 3rd. 6 minutes later, it entered 15*180km lunar orbit. With 4 more orbital maneuvers, it will climb to 210km lunar orbit to rendezvous with the returner. There was a display of the national flag before taking off. Chang'e 6 has completed the lunar ascent phase, the next step is lunar orbit rendezvous docking and sample transfer!

I remember in 2003 when China first sent a taikonaut in space in 2003, Western media dismissed it as only done for prestige adding that China better save it's little resources and little talents for poverty alleviation. The reality is that Chinese best talents are in every domain but mostly in construction and infrastructure.

While it is true that the European contributions are in the form of payloads and scientific instruments attached to the wholly Chinese lander, it is worth noting that Europe genuinely cooperated to help the mission (and previous ones) by providing use of its ground stations for communication with the spacecraft.
International cooperation is a good thing, and is very much what China encourages explicitly through its ILRS initiative. It's good that Europe remains open to working with China in cis-lunar space, unlike (for example) the US.
