When you get to trying to make the apple cider donuts......don't sweat it if you cannot get the donut shape. You can easily just make them smallish sized balls of dough and deep fry those. Balls, round discs, who cares....it is the taste that matters.
Cut out a bunch of squares of baking paper and pipe your donut batter onto it then slip the whole thing into your fat. The doughnut will release from the paper and you can remove it from the pan and the donut should hold its shape for you a little better. But the best way to get around all of that is to get yourself some silicone baking donut pans which would make you happy because you can have Donuts pretty much anytime you want them and never have to mess around with frying. And it's always good to have less seed oils in your diet. You should put silicone donut pans on your wish list.

I chuckled when Recky and Carol got interested in Tater Tot hotdish. Since Minnesota has the highest percentage of Swedish Americans. If you can't smoke, you can still Texas Brisket in the oven (sorry, might be better to do in winter when it's not too hot outside because your oven will be on for at least 6 hours) Of course, you can also do chili or Tex Mex. Catfish, huckleberries and Marion berries are going to be hard to find substitutes for.
A little trick on tator tot hotdish from a Minnesotan! make sure to throw some thawed tator tots in with the veggies, meat and cream of mushroom soup(or cream of chicken if you hate mushrooms) mixture.. they break up and then you get bits of potato in each bite so its not just the layer of crispy ones on top! so good! I grew up eating it and It's basically a comfort food to me now.
You may be able to find wels catfish as a reasonable substitute for American catfish. It is found in much of Europe, and is native to part of Sweden, where I think it may be called “Mal”.
Alabama white barbeque sauce is pretty much just mayonnaise, vinegar, lemon juice, and a couple spices and it's great on grilled or smoked chicken. Catfish has its own unique flavor, all other fish tastes different than catfish. Chicago deep dish is so good! Very hearty/filling.
Catfish. When I was in college, the dorms served catfish OFTEN, and I probably had a plate of it every time I saw it on the menu. I suspected they might have been raising it in the campus fisheries, because it had a very clean flesh, and it reminded me a LOT of cod loin. Very slight fishiness to the taste (enough to let you know that you're eating fish, fer cryin' out loud), and a satisfying heft to the chew. In nature, catfish like to lie in the mud at the bottom of creeks and ponds, and their flesh tends to incorporate chemicals from stuff it ingests from the mud. Even farm-raised catfish can end up with a muddy taste, but the best chance of getting a cut of catfish that everybody will find palatable is to look for farm-raised. And if you can't find affordable catfish for your Mississippi catfish recipe, I suggest going with cod. Then once you make it over here to visit us, you can try the real thing.

Butter warm toast, add 4-5 thin slices of ripe avocado to cover toast and a little salt and pepper to taste. Or a seasoning called "Everything Bagel" is great if you have that. This goes good with coffee or tea. You can also add a fried egg and slices of cooked bacon on top of the avocado too for a more heavier breakfast sandwich just add another piece of toast with mayo on top.
There is a Tex Mex dish that is an avocado that is stuffed with chicken beef or shrimp& cheese & deep fried Tilapia, flounder, & cod have a similar taste to catfish. I don’t know how easily you could get those. If that isn’t possible then look for a white fresh water fish with a mild taste to prepare like catfish Taffy is candy. It’s not hard if it’s fresh. Although we can get an ice cream made with them.) Cheese curds are lumps of fresh cheddar cheese

Carol, it isn't raw tuna or salmon after you add all the ingredients. think of it like pickled herring where the vinegar cooks the fish. Illinois has few unique foods. If you liked Philly cheese steaks, you should try making an Italian beef. savory, garlicy roast beef on a roll with provolone or mozzarella cheese and either soft, mild green pepper for Recky or hot giardiniera for Carol. Look up Chicago style hotdogs aka garden dog. you'll be surprised and the are awesome.🌭
You may be able to grow huckleberries where you are. They grow well in mountainous states here so it may work well in the colder climate of Sweden during spring and summer.
Marionberries are like a better version of Blackberries. Grandma made the best blackberry pies/cobblers ever! Still my favorite. She also use to send us out with pots and pans to pick RED huckleberries. I'm a Pie King! thanks to her. Love you guys PS: this was in the State of Washington where they had a small plot of land. WA is covered in blackberries, blueberries, huckleberries, salmon berries, thimbleberries, raspberries, oregon grape berries.
I grew up in Oregon and currently live in Washington, your best substitute for huckleberry is blueberry, it's not going to taste the same though. For Marionberry try a combo of blackberries and raspberries. Or blackberries and mulberries or maybe all 3, it's a gmo hybrid berry and I'm not sure what the hybrid berry is from. Marion Berries are a cross between black berries and raspberries. They are unique and taste like no other berry. I would send you a bottle of homemade marion berry jelly, but I just cannot afford the shipping cost to Sweden.
I saw another person post about it on here, and i just wanted to say it again.... AMERICAN APPLE CIDER is NOT ALCOHOL. It is juice with mashed pulp, similar to applesauce and mixed with spices. American Hard Cider is alcohol. They are extremely different. The reason we emphasize this, is because many foreigners don't realize we have an entirely different drink. It's one of the oldest traditional drinks in the US. Most people drink it around Fall (Autumn) and Winter. The cinnamon and other spices are warming for the colder months. We love our Hot Spiced Apple Cider. I even have an air freshener that smells like it. *Side note.- in Washington State they have something called White Coffee. It's not as bitter, really creamy, and has a nutty flavor to it. It's made differently than regular coffee. I liked it.
I grew up with a festive drink of Wassail. It is apple cider, frozen OJ concentrate, frozen lemonade, pineapple juice, cinnamon, cloves and a dash of allspice. Mix everything together and cook over the stove until it is thick and flavors meld together. It is amazing! I have given it to my neighbors as a Christmas Eve gift and have been told it would mix well with liquor if you are into drinking the hard stuff.
Huckleberries are way more tart than blueberries. A popular dish in Montana are pasties. They are pretty easy to make and come from Irish and Welsh miners moving in to Butte, Montana. So, that would be easy to make. You shouldn't need special ingredients for it. Also, Indian Tacos are made here. You could do that there too.
No on having to buy a smoker. Look up how to do in an oven (in a sealed container to minimize smoke in kitchen/over) here on UA-cam. You still really need to do "low & slow" so will need to do over a weekend, maybe? But totally doable. The Marionberry pie, if you make a very small pie, should be doable w/ some Harry & David Marionberry Preserves (11.5 Ounces) I can send you just need to do a small pie & put a top on it to keep the juices from totally evaporating.
I live in Chicagoland. While I love Chicago deep dish pizza, our go to pizza is thin crust, tavern style, box cut pizza. Never had Rocky Mountain oysters. Never will! Louisiana has great food. Maine lobster rolls are absolutely delicious. Love Maryland crabs. I live close to Wisconsin. The cheese curds are awesome but they must squeak when you bite into them. All the food looks awesome…except the Rocky Mountain oysters. They’re probably good but nope.
Hello from Washington State! I would say the state food would either be clam chowder or because we are famous for our apples than an apple pie would be good
As a Mississippian I can think of a couple of things that were created in Mississippi but has spread to other areas of the country. An obvious dessert would be Mississippi mud pie or Mississippi mud cake . Another one that could be cooked as a snack or as a appetizer are deep fried pickles. They are amazing . Good luck with whatever you decide to make. Sending nothing but good wishes your way .
I have no idea if you've done the Philly Cheesesteak yet (if you guys are actually cooking all of these) but as someone who is from the area, there are two things I must stress to you. The first is that you have to either get or make the right bread. Places in the US outside of the Philly area constantly get this part wrong when they try to make cheesesteaks. The bread must by soft and fluffy on the inside to soak up all the juices and harder on the outside to trap in all of those juices so it doesn't fall apart on you. It's the latter which most places get wrong. You can find recipes for the bread as well as the rest of the sandwich here on UA-cam. The second thing that I'd like to point out is that from what I've learned from watching videos like this, European beef is a lot less fatty than American beef which is something you'll have to compensate for when making a cheesesteak. A lot of the flavor comes from the meat (Ribeye is a common choice) and all of the drippings from the fat which soaks into the bread along with the cheese and other toppings (oftentimes just fried onions). You may want to fry it in something like beef tallow to compensate or just find fattier pieces of whatever cut you choose to go with. As for cheese, it's kinda up to you. If you want to use either American cheese or 'whiz' if you can find them, they mix into the meat better but I personally prefer sharp Provolone.
Marionberry is a form of blackberry. I watched video of you making Philly cheesesteak & I don't know what mistakes you are referring to. You made it correctly. While some people saute onions until they are translucent before cooking them with the beef steak, others add them to the top uncooked. Some people butter inside of bun before grilling it, while others don't use butter at all. There is not just one way of making Philly cheesesteaks. If you visited 20 restaurants in Philadelphia, you will find they all make them a bit differently. After you posted the video, people gave you additional tips, toppings, & sauce ideas, but that doesn't mean you made mistakes. They shared what THEY like. Choose cheese, mayonnaise/butter, peppers, toppings, & sauces YOU like. Only tip I will give you is that if you place a lid on top of skillet after you add cheese, it will melt faster.
There are on-line recipes for making apple cider. Make sure you DON'T use the apple cider vinegar recipe!! The recipes seem easy enough, just a little time consuming. One I saw uses a crock-pot (slow cooker).
Do keep in mind that some of these are not the whole state, like Chicago pizza and Philly Cheesesteak. And Idaho was just about any way you want to prepare a potato.
Recky (& Carol), little known and less important fact which I'll answer since you brought it up: rather than baked or cooked, doughnuts are fried--in boiling oil. You probably already know that the Cuban enclave in the Miami is the largest Cuban population in the world after Havana. In reference to the Louisiana section, Choctaw is a tribe whose blood runs through many Cajuns. Believe it or not, MACK-in-awe is spelled Mackinac (Island), but across the Straits of Mackinac, there's a town spelled Mackinaw City. Is that weird, or what? There are a number of berry varieties which are strictly regional in the US. Taffy can be hard, but more often, it's soft and chewy. Chislic is one of about 15 foods only found in S. Dakota. In addition to Starbucks, Tulley's, Seattle's Best, and a few others, have gone nationwide to worldwide.
As an over 40 year resident of Texas who has lived in at least 9 different states and my family comes from all over if you need help with ideas for dishes I'm here. Texas: you can make chili con carne, chicken fried steak, tacos (family recipe) or several other dishes. I even have a few recipes for Japanese dishes. Homestyle US cooking: chicken & dumplings, pot roast, potato salad, baked beans, red beans & rice, jambalaya and so many others.
We do still have apple cider donuts 😂 (I'm on the border of Massachusetts/NH) I'm actually 5 miles or so from Applecrest and i didn't know it was the oldest apple farm!
As a native of Colorado, I can tell you that bull testicles are NOT the favorite food of the state. It is only served at a handful of very upscale restaurants.
Catfish by itself is pretty bland, it is your typical white fish, but the muscle fibers are smaller from my experience than something like Halibut or Cod. But either of those cut thin and breaded in cornmeal like catfish would make a good substitute. If you do chicken fried steak, try to find cubed steak or a round steak and ask the butcher to tenderize it, or you could do it yourself with a meat hammer using the side with the edges. Pan fry it, don't deep fry it and serve with mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans. That's the best way to have it and how I grew up with it having it practically every week in Texas.
Yum. 'Enjoying your videos! Some of these dishes will be difficult without certain equipment and lots of practice. 🙂 Have fun with it. ... If, for instance, Tennessee's ribs are too expensive to try to cook (& w/o a smoker), we can suggest other dishes! ;-) (For TN ribs, dry rub is the best!) 🙂 Keep the fun coming through your videos! Thanks!
As a new Yorker, we do love our pizza. And more importantly, you also love our bagels. There's always this debate here in the states. What's the best pizza style, New York style or Chicago style? Just ask yourself one question which style gets imitated more in different states. Then you'll know I'm just saying.
Cider donuts are great, but outside the U.S. "cider" is usually alcoholic. Apple cider here is unfiltered apple juice. It's often very fresh, because it's seasonal and doesn't have the longest shelf-life, because it usually has few to no additives and will start to ferment after a couple months even if you keep it in the fridge.
I would LOVE a live chat for every video! We could chat with you in real time. If every single viewer would smack that Like button, we could influence UA-cam!! ❤🥰😍🤗
When I lived in New Mexico, I was introduced to breaded fried avacado. Stuffed the avocado with chicken fajita meat and a blend of cheeses. It was my favorite dish. The size 🥑 was gianormous! Yummy
Pretty much any white fish is a good substitute for catfish. There's nothing special about catfish, it's cheap in the US because its oily and has a stronger taste then most fish. So it's cooked in ways that mask the fish taste such as blackening or frying.
Howdy! hey Recky, "Alright, alright, alright" I'm gonna call you and we can work on your Matthew McConaughey impression LOL! If you have access to tilapia, or cod, you can bread it in cornmeal and it will taste similar to catfish, which is a little more dense is all. I've seen some Asian equivalents to catfish frozen in our stores here. Maybe in Sweden. It won't be exactly the same, but close. The secret is peanut oil, make sure it is between 350 and 375F, and deep enough for the fish to float in. Watch and keep turning until golden brown. Pull one piece and break it apart. it should be white and flakey all the way through, or it needs to cook a little longer. Stay on top of it, if you over cook it the fish will be mushy. Squeeze some lemon it it while eating.
I’ve ever had a cinnamon roll with my chili. I frequently eat a peanut butter on squishy white bread sandwich with chili. Sounds weird but is really soooo good 😋

Flounder and trout are pretty dang good.
Marion Berries are a cross between black berries and raspberries. They are unique and taste like no other berry. I would send you a bottle of homemade marion berry jelly, but I just cannot afford the shipping cost to Sweden.
Listen, if you make the jelly, I'll pay the shipping
We got freshly made apple cider doughnuts out at my local pumpkin patch
Love going to lunch and a Carol and Recky video pops up. Yippee!!
I'm From Missouri And We Make Some Amazing Yummy Food Here And Ya Both Are Amazing People And Loved it Awesome
good food and good company is the best moment in life
Apple Cider doughnuts are not from New Hampshire. It was created in New York and is officially a "New England" dessert.
😂 your reactions to American foods makes my day
4:51 That is the appropriate reaction, Carol. 👍🏼
I know Sweden got some tasty food too, luv you 2! 💙🇸🇪🇺🇸
I'm from Louisville Kentucky and the Hot Brown is a must try!
I'm in Vegas and I'm hard pressed to think of one iconic dish from here. I think we're home of the mish mash buffet😮
It would be great if you could come to Vegas! Big change from Sweden I'm sure, but fun 😊
Hey Ricky and Carol most Americans just say cider and donuts and that usually is in the fall time
Put butter and syrup on each pancake.
Hello from Washington State! I would say the state food would either be clam chowder or because we are famous for our apples than an apple pie would be good
Apple cobbler or Apple Brown Betty or Candied Apples and caramel apples. Lots of apple choices for you guys
Like Mississippi Mud Cake. My mom used to make that when I was a kid. It's awesome!
Mississippi pot roast
Tater tot’s are like hashbrowns which are fried potatoes but crispy basically small fried potatoes they are good had them since I was a little kid
Lol the silence on the rocky mountain oysters. Think of tator tots as bite size hashbrowns
Love the episode grew up in Indiana and those pork loin sandwiches are addicting
If they make it right ,and it's tender ,,oh my goodness. Is a great sandwich😊
Just remember when you do the apple cider donuts that it's actually apple cider and NOT apple cider vinegar lol!
Catfish definitely doesn't taste like any white fish I have ever eaten. I would recommend a different dish for Mississippi maybe a dessert dish.
I can tell you are disappointed Surstromming didn't make the list.
I can't get over Mediterranean cuisine. So, I'm voting for Washington. You can never go wrong with coffee.
We do still have apple cider donuts 😂 (I'm on the border of Massachusetts/NH) I'm actually 5 miles or so from Applecrest and i didn't know it was the oldest apple farm!
Hi from Minnesota! Tatertot Hotdish is sooooo delicious and super easy to make! Hope you can try it soon! ❤️
Taffy is a sweet chewy mostly fruit flavored soft candy!
🙂 Have fun with it. ... If, for instance, Tennessee's ribs are too expensive to try to cook (& w/o a smoker), we can suggest other dishes! ;-) (For TN ribs, dry rub is the best!) 🙂
Keep the fun coming through your videos! Thanks!
We love N.C. & TN ribs! Several states have amazing ribs, not just TX.
You see their eyes glaze over when they heard "Bull testicles?" 😂
I'm waiting for the video where you make those! 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s almost cider donut season in NH, so you’ve got good timing.
We also have this here in NY not that anyone cares cuz it doesn’t happen in NYC😂😂 my most favorite time of the year lol
If you have trouble getting American Catfish the best substitutes would be Tilapia or Basa (aka Asian Catfish).
See you liked the comment. What we use for fried catfish over here are yellow channel cats or bullheads if you want to do more research on analogs.
marionberry is related to a blackberry
I love fried catfish it's awesome, could always use a cod or bass
We love you two. Please come to the USA..
Many friends want to meet you and to welcome to our cities.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE apple cider donuts! I don’t even like doughnuts but I crave these donuts lmao❤❤😂😂😂
Howdy! hey Recky, "Alright, alright, alright" I'm gonna call you and we can work on your Matthew McConaughey impression LOL!
Well, it sounds delicious but very hard to do 😅
I’ve ever had a cinnamon roll with my chili. I frequently eat a peanut butter on squishy white bread sandwich with chili. Sounds weird but is really soooo good 😋
South Carolina has other food besides the Coastal cuisine. You can actually do a SC BBQ in a slow cooker. There is a recipe on the web.
Wow, need to check that out 😊
You could possibly try Haddock or maybe cod or tilapia as substitute.
