Exploring GREAT Compressor Tone on Guitar & Bass with the Origin Cali76 | Secret Weapons

- Few truer "secret weapons" exist than the 1176. It's one of the most iconic compressors of all time for a reason and Origins long beloved take on this piece of studio wizardry is a faithful and well executed adaptation of this classic sound. I really do love this compressor.

This is the most comprehensive way I've seen someone explain a compressor pedal, especially a little more robust one like the Orign Effects One. I've had the origin 76 and currently have the slide rig but never felt I understood exactly what everything did... but now I do! Great Demo as always!
Beautiful review, thanks!
Killer into 💯
That opening song 🔥 🔥 🔥
Probably the best demo of the Cali76 I’ve ever seen. When playing electric, did you find your go to settings to be blending some of the dry signal back in? If so how much?
Really excited for this one. Just bought a stacked edition a few weeks back, but exchanging it for one of these new guys. The stacked really sold me on needing a compressor, but think this will be a better fit. I might look at a cleaner/more neutral transparent compressor for other sounds, but loving the preampy vibe the 76 has been adding.
I honestly really want a stacked as well. I might sell my OG one to buy one..
@@markjohnstonofficial I can absolutely see and justify having both. I personally didn't use the second channel as much, but it was nice to have the first be slow attack fast release and then feed the second a bit and have it be opposite just to make sure nothing crazy got through while still feeling dynamic. Had more fun with it when revamping other instruments or vocals with it. I might grab it again in the future, but my dumb brain likes the led meter and having access to ratio, attack, and release.
Hi Mark! Have you compared these 2 new model against the stacked edition ? If yes, what would your 2 main differences( a part from the gold knob 😁)! Nice soundtrack as always ! Finally, thanks in advance !
Id like to know this too. I just emailed origin about this just now lol
I’m really curious as well.
I’ve got a big box model they made 10 years ago…Cali76GP. Has a germanium boost and parallel compression. Works good enough for me.
Honestly those old ones are so rad
Sometimes the box needs to be bigger to fit all the magic.
I have labels on my Compact Deluxe’s Attack knob for the “Fast” and “Slow”. I can remember that the release knob is the same way… but I have never been able to keep it straight without the labels.
I honestly have a hard time working out why it’s so hard to keep straight, but it’s the same way that the rack unit operates.
I’m torn between this and the Squish As for guitar. Which do you prefer?
I want that St. Vincent guitar so bad. It hurts me.
I’m thinking your older version is now going in the reamp fun category 😎
The old one doesn’t have the headroom for it tbh. The new one is the reamping one in the current context
I looked for the stacked version for a very long time(no more in stock). Would you prefer the newer version?
Obviously, there are advantages to the new version, but no duel compression.
This vs uafx max ? That has the 1176 compressor and la 2a…deciding between these 2. Awesome vid
The UAFX is digital, this is analog. UA have a terrible warranty and customer service, $100+ bench fee for out of warranty repairs.
As a guitar player who plays both guitar/bass and will only buy one im assuming the bass version of the compressor would suit both better.
I’m not sure. The HPF in the bass comp is wildly helpful and actually can be super useful in a guitar / drum machine / whatever else context but it’s also tough to forgo independent attack and release controls DEPENDING on your genres. For me I basically live in that fast attack slow release works so the bass one on guitar would likely serve me just fine.
@@markjohnstonofficial Thanks Mark. I have always been in fast attack slow release as well for ambient and church music. For years I have had my cali set this way so think im gonna give the Bass one a try! Appreciate the response
now you got me jonesing for a Topo...
Lacroix is the pulp n peel of sparkling water. Give me Topo or give me death.
But is there any real comparison between this and the Empress Effects Compressor MKII? Would love to see a shoot out! 🤠
The empress is SUPER transparent. This adds weight in a way that an 1176 does.
Mine arrives tomorrow, bringing my Origin compressor count to three... I know, I know!
Honestly im one shy too so I get it. I want a stacked.
What’s the difference between this and the Cali76 stacked version?
I opted for the stacked....its this pedal with another 76 that it runs into. Most transformative guitar effect Ive ever had.
Damn these intros really make me pick up my guitar and record stuff. Right after that i realize that yeah i still suck.
Go back like a year and a half on this channel and hear how much worse the mixes are and how much less interesting the arranging is. Just making stuff week in and out WILL improve and refine those skills.
@@markjohnstonofficial 100% true of course 😎
First
nuh uh
I mean he wouldn’t just on the internet and lie would he
Can't believe they still don't mark the knob settings, even on the newer gen releases. So dumb. The only thing I don't like about the pedal (but I dislike this **greatly**).
Do you mean the ratio settings specially?
@@markjohnstonofficial Ratio, Attack, Release... I have the previous one (with the single red/orange/yellow LED), and the little "quick start guide" that came with it had contradictory info about all three which made it even more confusing.
Especially knowing that the Attack and Release controls are opposite of "normal", they really should have these marked appropriately.
@@brianpylant4617 to be fair VERY few compressors I’ve owned (and I have owned a LOT of them) mark out their “which is faster which is slower” on knobs. The quirk of this is specifically a quirk of the original 1176 rack compressor which also doesn’t have those settings notated
