  • William "Whilce" Portacio is an American comic book artist originally from the Philippines. Portacio started out as an inker at Marvel Comics in 1985. Over time, he was given assignments as a penciller as well. Portacio became noted for his work on such titles as The Punisher, X-Factor, and the Uncanny X-Men.
However, in 1992, Portacio left Marvel to co-found Image Comics with six other high-profile artists. But, Portacio quickly withdrew from his partnership in this enterprise due to his sister's bout with lupus, eventually publishing his title Wetworks through Jim Lee's Wildstorm imprint. Other notable series that Portacio has worked on include Stone and Marvel's controversial Heroes Reborn storyline with Iron Man.
Whilce is probably best known for his work on Bishop from the Uncanny X-Men. Created by Whilce Portacio and John Byrne along with Portacio's longtime friend, artist Karl Altstaetter, Bishop burst onto the scene from the far future and infused the mutant mythos with his explosive no-nonsense attitude and the riveting mystery that drove him. The energy-absorbing mutant soldier has been a central figure in X-Men storytelling ever since, and this January, fans will travel back in time to his groundbreaking comics debut in X-MEN LEGENDS #5-6. The saga will be written and drawn by Portacio himself along with prolific comics writer Brian Haberlin.
Fasten your seat belts as this is going to be one helluva interview!

Whilce is an awesome man..and a brilliant artist/ penciler/inker. Im 48 and ive been collecting his books since 1990 when i really got into comics. Before that i was reading and studying John Byrnes Terry Austins art, and Claremont writing. Then lee and whilce, liefeild even..😅 were my inspiration to be an artist now. Im not a comic boon artist, im an artist, but at times ill draw Marvel/Dc you know. But whilce is still an inspiration. His inking style is really brilliant 💯👍🏻 im glad hes doing well. Good conversation mate. Cheers.. Happy Holidays from England 🙏🏻

There are many artists whose art gets me geeked up to draw. Whilce is one of the few guys who speaks and describes things in a way that gets me jazzed because he puts into words abstract concepts I play around with in my head. When everyone was excited about Jim Lee I was always more interested to see what Whilce was doing because his style and sense was closer to my own.
