The tempo is too fast for me…but the Dover can make it work…Heifetz played everything too fast..and nobody can say anything. So…I think I am getter older and like the last generation…it loses some of the drama in such a hurry.
Can you be more specific about why it is too fast? Schubert simply marks it Allegro, so there is ample room for interpretation whether you want to go in the direction of presto or andante. More importantly, the music implies a feeling of two, a la breve if you will, as the first violin states the theme after the fermata in half notes. Thus, I feel it in two and I think the Dover does also (I have not discussed it with them, so this is just conjecture). As for Mr. Heifetz, as most of us call him, yeah he favored brisk tempi, primarily due to his abhorrence of sentimentality. May not be for everyone but certainly a most valid idea. Plus, as they say, can't argue with the man's stature as the one of the very greatest violinists of all time.
The absolute precision is incredible. Simply awesome playing.
The Camden Stare is unrivaled in all of chamber music. Also, excellent performance by all (as usual).
Agreed. He must have everything memorized and concentrates on ensemble playing with the others.
