    We continue our testing of various 9mm loads including the Hornady 135gr Critical Duty, Federal 124gr HST, Underwood 90gr Xtreme Defender and the Speer 147gr Gold Dot. We shoot these through drywall, wood and sheet metal into DoctorKote 10% ballistics gel. We also compare a NATO spec 9mm ball and even throw in some body armor tests you might find interesting.
    With the exception of Underwood ammo, the ammo tested in this video is available at most any gun shop in the U.S. If you're interested in Underwood ammo.

      +Military Arms Channel I also really enjoy your videos. Will you be doing an update on the Underwood after some reliability testing? This has me seriously considering converting myself, which is surprising considering that I've always wanted the extra weight of a 124 or 147 grain round. It looks like the 90 grain round moving at a high speed is more than capable.

      +swaghauler I do like these types of videos BUT I'd enjoy it MORE if he used larger sheets of drywall...nailed to studs...build a 4 ft x 8 ft wall...with more large sheets of drywall on the other side simulating an actual wall.
      How about going to a junk yard and picking up a car door? Wasn't that the idea when shooting through the 20 gauge square of metal?
      Shoot from a realistic "home defence" or "real life shooting" distance. Maybe 10-15 feet while running and then stationary.
      Keep the videos coming though. :)

      @What's Up? that’s not correct, the energy being delivered is what’s gonna determine recoil, so if you have a heavy bullet going slower and a lighter bullet going faster and they produce the same energy at the muzzle then they will have the same recoil.

    • @unknown121290
      @unknown121290 3 роки тому

      @What's Up? well some assumptions will have to be made since federal doesn’t make a 115 gr HST, only 124 and 147. Assuming they made a 115gr hst load at 1100 FPS at the muzzle, the energy at the muzzle would then be 309 ft•Lbs, however a 147 gr at the advertised 1000 FPSM produces 326 ft•Lbs. However if federal made a 115 gr loading at 1200fpsm then the energy at the muzzle would be 368ft•Lbs, which would then produce a higher recoil impulse. This is a fairly elementary understanding of what causes recoil impulses though as there are things such as different powder types and burn rates and optimizing those with bullet grain weight.
      Edit: that’s also assuming the exact same handgun, bore axis as well as grip.
      Edit 2: this is the same reason USPSA and IPSC take power factor into consideration.

    Been carrying the Underwood XD +P+ for about 2 years, mainly because of your videos. Was a little concerned the +P+ might kick more than standard ball round, but after testing, noticed little to no difference, probably because of the lighter bullet. Great news. Underwood XD is quite expensive, so being able to practice with cheaper ball ammo is really nice for continuity in training, especially since I typically burn through 500-1000 rounds/month. Another minor, but nice, benefit of Underwood XD is that the copper bullets are lighter than lead bullet. I EDC 15 rounds in my G19, and 2 additional 15 round mags, one on each side for a broken wing situation. There is actually a noticeable overall total weight reduction between 45 rounds of the Underwood XD vrs. the others, which for EDC is really nice.

Your testing has been very influential in my choice of ammo and weapons (especially the torture tests that most of us would never subject guns we pay for to). Very interesting tests! Keep in mind that what appears in gel to be a "stretch" cavity is that pistol rounds don't have enough energy to truly tear tissue, so the gel actually shows the temporary stretch cavity. Otherwise, the actual damage path of the bullet is the "permanent crush" cavity.

    A 124gr Gold Dot would have penetrated more appropriately (not as deep). 147gr is too heavy for the Gold Dot's expansion. In gel at the right temperature, the 147 goes 18" or so which is really on the high side or too much. The 124 stays around 16".

    • @Kev376
      @Kev376 6 років тому +3

      The 124gr gold dot would have still failed on the wood and definitely on the metal sheet so I dont think it would have made much of a difference, Gold Dot is amazing but from what I've seen with 9mm the HST has a higher chance of expanding than gold dot

    Started hand loading both Ext. Defenders and Ext. Penetrator for my 45/70 Guide gun over a year ago, before pistol bullet were designed. Having loaded darn near every brand of premium bullets, for over 30 years, and shot thru all kinds of things, nothing comes close to these Lehigh designs. Just bought XD-E, 4.5" and 200, 90g defenders and 100, 115g penetrators and the proper propellent to run them at top published velocities. Now you will make them more famous and even harder to find and purchase. :) They are the best in my book, period. The penetration tests I ran for the rifle produced amazing results. Wish they would make them in .375 so I can run them in my Ackley Improve Mt. rifle. Come on Lehigh...

So now im carrying 9mm because half the stores dont have 40, and if they do its american eagle fmj, and one brand of hp ammo.. vs 25 brands of 9mm fmj, and atleast that many jhp... In a perfect world 40 would ve as common as 9mm.. its just a better round for this use ..

    A while back you did an abbreviated test of .380 loads out of a Kahr pistol with a 2.5" barrel and showing the advantages of ball ammo in that cartridge. Can you do a similar test, maybe with a wider field of ammo and / or pistols used, for the 9mm Makarov?
    The reason for the request is simple. Pistols chambered for the 9mm Makarov round are typically significantly less costly than their .380 and 9mm brethren, yet the round itself offers better stats on velocity and bullet weight than the .380 and the pistols are much more affordable than a quality 9mm handgun, particularly one intended for concealment.
    I'm happy to help with ammo or pistols, as well as purchase a Bulgarian from Copper Custom if that helps. Please advise how I can help defray the cost of such a test. Thanks in advance.

This means that the XD bullets are not tumbling. Thanks again for the great content.

    I thought over penetration is an undesirable thing with a defensive/home protection round? Don't we want the energy to stop with the target?

    • @lrmgrl
      @lrmgrl 4 роки тому +2

      Yes. There are some scenarios where over penetration could be what you need. But in my opinion, an everyday self defense round that over penetrates is asking for trouble. The HST looked to be the best self defense round in this test. It would have been nice to see what the critical defense round would do in these scenarios because the critical duty is designed more for law enforcement where shooting through barriers is more likely. The critical defense is touted as more of a self defensive round. Lastly, it is possible a bad guy may have body armor, however, I would not bet my life it is a 2A threat level. Plus, even if it was, the round in this test is going to go through the 2A and then continue probably through the target and who knows where or what it's going to strike before stopping.

      The test is showing relative performance through the same barriers. Because it's meant for relative performance the barrier type doesn't matter as long as the performance is only compared against others shot through the same barrier.
      If you're only worried about recreating the possible effects of missing a shot inside a home and having it go through a wall, then having it go through 2 pieces of spaced drywall is what you'd want to see.
