Diamond head are the dictionary definition of criminally underrated. I’m so glad to see people who appreciate them.
Spot on. My mate had the individual numbered White album and it's a classic. Borrowed Time was totally overproducted.

@MartinPopoff would you consider Rush or Tool as “smarty pants” metal ? Also, I like it when you say “jokey” though I don’t exactly know what you mean by it? Also, when you say concerts are a waste of time and you have no use for concerts. I wish you would go into more detail and elaborate on that concept. You never say why you feel that way?
I actually auditioned for the Drummers job in May 83 and remember it was in a building next to a canal, in a place called Lye near Stourbridge [West Midlands].There was a double Natural wood Tama Superstar kit and i was only a single bass player and i was shitting myself [17 years old, they were 23] Tatler was a gent, Harris was cool and smoking a joint, the new bass player Mervyn Goldsworthy was taking over and was a complete dick. I never got the job but kept in touch with Sean Harris's mother {Linda] and she gave my band a support with them at University's.
They ended up getting session players for the Canterbury album.
They were all great to hang with on the Canterbury Tour, they got a new bass player and added a Keyboard player and their jams in sound checks were awesome, every style you could imagine and such underated musicians. They were managed by Seans mother and their ex school teacher used to run the fan club.
Sean Harris told me he really liked the vocals of Coverdale/Hughes together and loved QUEEN, Brian Tatler adored Schenker, Blackmore, Iommi and EVH. He also told me he thought Jimmy Page was a genius songwriter but wasn't that keen on his lead playing.
There you go a little bit of nostalgia there. As regards to the reviews here, the Borrowed Time album is essential and the Canterbury album [i hated it when it was released] is an absolute masterpiece, every track has a different mood and colour, Zeppelin were the same, different mood on every track. Knight of the Swords is simply stunning, the whole album was ahead of everything at the time, they were forced by MCA Records to be Hip and Trendy and this is what broke them up. They simply were not a band that could be moulded.
If anyone is curious to what Sean Harris is doing now, he writes film scores for TV, he even wrote the music for a World Cup Anthem.

I live in Stourbridge and saw Brian down the pub, just before Covid lockdown. Gave me a DH pick/plectrum. Great bloke and yes, for me 1. White Album.
I listen to Borrowed Time more than the debut these days, the songs are so epic, almost regal sounding. Would’ve benefitted from Dead Reckoning making the track list though

You're not alone. I love Borrowed Time. It's by far my favourite and Canterbury has become my 2nd favorite. Lightning to the Nations is 3rd.
Yes, that record needs another rocker or two. And that long blues track was a mistake I reckon. Dead Reckoning and Play It Loud would have been worthy additions I think.

They were a bloody good live band around 1980 I must if seen them about 20 times. Brian a really nice guy who would always find time to chat to you. My favourite memory is seeing them play at Woolwich Odeon the night after the riots. Hardly anyone turned up but for those of that did some great memories

Absolutely one of my favorite bands, nearly in my top 10. These guys were amazing songwriters, able to make metal that was really catchy and Sean Harris was like a metal version of Robert Plant

Lightning to the Nation's with the additional tracks like I Don't Got and Shoot out the Lights is my favourite album of all time. Could have been one of the best bands ever but poorly managed. Saw them in 1983 at my loca! Leisure centre. Canterbury totally underrated.

Did Diamond Head re record Am I Evil for the Borrowed Time album ? I have owned Borrowed Time for years . Canterbury was inspired by the band's love for U - 2 , unfortunately Holocaust , Tygers of Pantang , Saracen , and Witchfynde all went down a more commercial path . Def Leppard , and Witchfynde became commercial Metal , Tygers of Pantang tried the Foreigner - Journey route , but the absolute extremely bi - polar music , as well as band image change proto thrash metal band Jaguar pursued was staggering . Jaguar went from a raw Motorhead type sound and band image to bleach blonde new wave haircuts complete with white button up shirts , skinny ties etc , and a sound that could be best described as an even less rocking Duran Duran without any of the pop hooks . Only Iron Maiden and Venom kept a somewhat consistent sound out of the NWOBHM bands . By 1985 almost all the bands broke up , but Raven and Saxon went down a more commercial path , but unlike some of their peers their music still at least retained some elements of Metal
Saxon had a rebirth & are making great heavy albums.
Sean Harris (the original singer) released 2 albums (as Notorious) between Canterbury (1983) and Death & Progress (1993). The 2 albums were called: Radio Silence (1985) and Notorious (1990).
Just heard that DH are releasing a re-recording of their debut album Lightning To The Nations. It's out in November apparently.
borrowed time is a masterpiece. not heavy like their first album but for me brilliant piece of AOR
?? It's rock but ballads like call me are aor. This album was much more commercially orientated than their first, hence AOR.
The last 2 albums have been killer, saw them on their last tour, and had the privilege of meeting and chatting with the legendary Brian Tatler, the show was just awesome!
There was an incident concerning Sean Harris mannerisms a la Plant onstage that alienated the crowd in a concert here in Spain when they opened for Rainbow in '82 along with Girlschool. He was pelted mercilessly by the crowd, I guess the few more commercially accessible new songs from Borrowed Time didn' t help either.
I saw them live with Nick Tart on vocals back in '07. He was terrible, I remember he dressed up as if he was in a Pop-Punk band(which didnt fit with the rest of the band) and before playing Am I Evil, he said "This is the song you've been waiting for all night". I was like, really? He basicly reduced DH to a one-hit-wonder. Their current singer Rasmus Bom Andersen is a much better fit than him.
Borrowed Time IS what I got out of the gate, and it's still my favorite...didn't hear a thing about them before that. The production is fine.

I really like it when you discuss these topics about NWOBHM. I love Diamond Head and it was a very interesting retrospect as well as surprising at least for me since I had no idea they had more albums after Canterbury. In any case, I'd had loved if you had talked some more about the band's lineup changes through the years as a way to keep track of differences in the sound of Diamond Head classic 80s era and the post-Canterbury albums.

They have pre-recorded the first album and it will be released in November. A new version of 'Its Electric' is available on Spotify and it sounds great.
Here's my list to all the lovers of NWOBHM:

2. Borrowed Time (Another Excellent work highly influential)
3. Canterbury (Good album with a few highlight songs and rest a little more mainstream)
4. Death and Progress (Decent album with a few nuggets while rest just ok)
5. The Coffin Train (Good modern album with a couple good tracks rest average at best)
6. Diamond Head (Good album with couple of good tracks rest just ok) 7. All Will Be Revealed ( One of their weakest efforts not my cup of tea)
8. Whats in your Head (A little weak with some heaviness and couple of good tracks but the rest not so much)
Thanks to this episode I am now officially on a Diamond Head binge. I've heard the second album, now on the self titled from 2016. Woof!
I saw Diamond Head live maybe 4-5 years ago. With Raven, no less! They were having issues with whatever singer they had at the time, and some guy from Lynch Mob, if I remember right, had to fill in last minute. He did really well i thought.
Yeah DH. Their albums were really hard to get over here. First song I heard was am i evil .... great. There were some strange compilation albums and maxi-singles available. Eventually I got Canterbury. And till this day, I really enjoy that album.
I listen to Borrowed Time a lot but Canterbury lost out because when it came out it had a major mispressing and many got returned.Grossly underrated band.Just pre-ordered new recording of Lightning To The Nation out in November.Keep up the good work guys.

@@alibobsmarland9572 I was chatting online with Brian Tatler a while back about Canterbury and I said it was my actual fav and he said he had really mixed feelings because it was the album that split the band, i feel he had some regrets about that.
Canterbury is great, the sound change was just too much for the average NWOBHM fan.

Diamond head great band some great tunes very underrated
Canterbury has a rough start but To The Devil His Due and Knight of the Swords are two of their best songs. Better than anything they’ve done since and Side B is much better than Side A
Yet trying to sound way too much like Def Leppard - Pyromania for the most part. Saxon, Savage, Jaguar, Raven, even Tygers did the same mistake and certainly didn't work for any of them.

Canterbury is a great Rock album! Definition of criminally underrated.
Glad they didn't fall into the trap, unlike the above-mentioned venerable bands. This way they also saved their record label the hassle of having to come up with an alternate, censored version of their album covers for the big American record stores.
To the Devil his Due is probably Sean's best vocal performance
I agree with much of what Pete and Martin said about the production on the early albums. In contrast, imo, the production on the BBC Friday Rock Show sessions from 1980 is much better. The drums are crisper and the vocals sound less strained.

Only discovered these guys about 12 years ago and they don't make a bad album. Too bad I never saw their albums at my Tower Records in the 80's. Would gave been one of my faves all this time.
Lightning to the Nations has to be one of the greatest riff albums of all time.
Borrowed time probably should have included Dead Reckoning .
Though I own all of these, I only really enjoy the first two (my top two) and half of my #3. They've always been a bit over-rated in my opinion.

Canterbury is the best one, for me. But that last one is phenomenal for a band that's been going as long as they have.
Saw them in 2015 in Germany 🇩🇪 50 minute set they have still got it.

Saw them in 2016 in Dallas and if there were 30 ppl there I'd be shocked. They rocked i like it was full though, even giving a shout-out to some guy in a wheelchair, who apparently follows them to every gig around globe.

Canterbury at last place, huh? For me, I don't really care if it's not "heavy". I don't look for heavy when reaching for Diamond Head. That's not what they were all about. They were a moody and melodic rock band with some great singing, arrangements, and riffs. I love Canterbury (so do most people in the comments section). To me it's almost as good as Borrowed Time (which is my favourite album of theirs by far) and Lightning to the Nations is my 3rd favourite. Oh and btw, the production is FINE on Borrowed Time. Martin is being overly harsh on it.
It's their opinion.

Neil Diamond is a legend big fan. Only have Lightning to the Nations great album. Saw them in concert a couple years ago not a very good show maybe an off night or the low turnout maybe 50 people. Anyway great show as always with Martin.
1980-1982 NWOBHM was NEVER about great production, but all about great songs, menacing riffs and hunger for more metal. Diamond Head, Angelwitch, Trespass, Holocaust and Witchfynde were my top 5 of the early eighties!

How sad/stupid do I feel? After hearing DH's FRS session (1980?) I bought the white album (original version) then, years later, took it with a load of other vinyl to a Charity shop! I've still got some of their early 7 inch singles which I play a lot, they sound great!
"Don't you leave me" and "Lightening to the Nations" are two of my favourite songs. However, they lost me with their later albums.
I have never really heard any Diamond Head albums, a few songs here and there, but I saw their leader, Brian Tatler, in a BBC documentary about NWOBHM and its history as a music genre. He seemed to be a very likeable, albeit a bit disappointed, person who liked talking about old history and the band and their relations with other bands back in the early 80s
I'm gonna admit that I've never listened to Diamond Head. Nothing has ever really drew me to them. And I'm a massive collector of hard rock/heavy metal (and NWOBHM). Maybe i should have a listen. And I'm british 🤣
I don't know what these guys are on about. All these albums are weak. Except the debut. Lightning To The Nations is a stone cold classic. It might even be better than Maiden's debut. That is high praise, and I stand by it.
This is one of those bands that I don’t own anything from. I only know the band name because of Metallica. Will likely pick some of their stuff up soon after watching this
The reason for re-recording two songs from The White Album for Borrowed Time was surely because The White Album hadn't had a major label release or proper promotion. It wasn't regarded at the time the way it is now due to Metallica's covers. Re-recording Lightning To The Nations and Am I Evil ensured they got a proper production and more folk would hear them.

Still remember them as the last minute replacement for Manowar at Reading in 1982 absolutely owning it - since released on CD, stunning - available on their MCA years box set. didnt get their first album at the time - only available form them by mail order so missed it - since remedied with the doble CD with the album on 1 disc and singles etc on the second, my first encounter was thefour cuts ep and then Living on Borrowed time - great album rubbish production. I loved Canterbury when it first came out and still do now - could have been massive if the production and some of the arrangements had been better - I think there is only the 2 of them on the cover because the other players were all hired hands? The actual pressng of the album was also fraught with problems - thousands were returned if I recall, and the one I have still has pklenty of jumps, pops and clicks, I just couldnt be bothered to return it at the time.
As well as poor management I think the way they dumped Colin Kimberley and Duncan Scott annoyed many British NWOBHM fans and as there were a ton of other bands to get behind I think they lost a lot of support doing that.
I've alsoheard demos for what wouldve been the next album after Canterbury, called Flight East - glad that was never released, mostly average and nothing like the first album or even Canterbury. The first album - which essentially was just a set of demos - when considered amongst them all, has to be the best though I do think that the last 2 are superb returns to great form and Brian Tatler was always and remains one of the best guitarists of the NWOBHM

I feel like The Coffin Train is their second or third best album. Production wise it's whatever. But there are like four really strong tunes on there.
I also feel like adding the two old tracks to Borrowed Time was an MCA thing. I would have rather seen Dead Reckoning, Streets of Gold and Shoot Out the Lights (which were unreleased at the time) on there instead. It also adds some speed to a ploddy record.
The Coffin Train should be much higher on the list, and the Self-Titled one too.

I see Borrowed Time as the debut which I love, also love Canterbury and saw them twice at Hammersmith Odeon on those tours but lost track of them after that. It all went wrong for them here in the UK when the Canterbury LP was badly pressed and sounded awful, the record co sent out free cassettes as replacements. Then the Hammersmith show suffered from sound problems with the PA cutting out in the middle of the show and killed the atmos completely. Then of course MCA dropped them like they did so many other bands. Diamond Head should have been huge but things just didn't go right for them.
I've heard a lot of their stuff but only own two albums - Canterbury and then one called Am I Evil. It's from 1987 and is a kind of Best of "Lightning to the Nations" and "On Borrowed Time" but are early versions of the songs. Read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Am_I_Evil_(album). I actually think this is probably the best collection of songs by them, plus the versions here are superior to the polished versions published on the Borrowed Time album.

Those are the only Diamond Head albums I have. Anthing without Sean Harris just isn't Diamond Head to me.
Borrowed Time was my first Diamond Head album, so the inclusion of Am I Evil and Lightning To The Nations were not drawbacks for me at the tine.
Same for me, Sean Harris fan all the way.
I give Nightning to the Nations a score of an A-

When you are managed by the singers mother and some random bloke with no music industry experience who can't get you a record contract for 6 years it's tough to have any kind of an impact.
I got the Notorious album. Still got the 99p bargain bin sticker on it 😂 very good though as it happens.

First LP is amazing, a sort of best of. Their second LP is good.. Afterwards they went in a curious direction, to me too far away from their debut.

Everyone says this band is under rated and didn't get recognition they deserved but I completely disagree. I dont think any of the lesser known nwobhm bands deserved any more credit. They may be talented bands but let's face it their is a reason maiden, saxon, and I know priest is more honorary nwobhm get more credit bc they are hands down better.
As a DH fan of nearly 40 years standing,I think they should have been a huge act,many of their problems stemmed from issues outside the music itself...
Their influence on others is a matter of public record,a remarkable achievement considering the above.
Not just talented,but sophisticated,they have a variety in their music that none of the bands you mentioned have ever achieved!
They were bigger because they had better management. Loads of those bands should have been bigger, DH included
