I honestly miss it, and with some of the new stuff I have learned from you I think I can do way better than I had in the past. Thanks to your videos I'm making seat covers for a set of custom seats out of vegtan leather. But I don't have a sewing machine that will sew that weight of leather I'm using. So it all hand stitching using a stitching iron to pre-punch the wholes. I am doing exactly what you are doing because its the only way I can see to get everything to align.

      Hello Ruf, Thank you so much for saying so! Yea, just go for it! I think you will do just fine with your backhoe seat. Really just use a good thick automotive grade vinyl will do. Marine vinyl lasts about the same but more expensive. The foam is protected by the vinyl, so a medium density will do. I really don't pay so much attention to it. Sometimes, I might use a tiny or almost no seam allowance (Like the Ferrari seats I am doing right now). Hello again from NH!
    Can you tell me when doing the French stitch is there a top and bottom side to the stitch? Is that why you do your French stitch on the front side of the vinyl? In other words, is there a difference between the appearance of any stitch from the top and back or bottom view?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  6 місяців тому

      Hello Betsy in NH, The top side usually looks better than the bottom side. However, in a rare pinch, you can sew the bottom side and still achieve the top stitch. Go ahead and try it, you'll see for yourself. Please keep liking and watching!

    Very nice Rudolph, thanks for sharing. I noticed you seem to be using Fiskar's brand scissors for cutting the vinyl, and that pair has a tab of some sort on one finger hole- is that something you use? Never saw one like that before. I see you use a different pair for cutting the threads. Would be interesting to know which scissors you use for what task, maybe you covered that already. Always enjoy learning your techniques. You're a real master of the art.

    when you cut the vinyl why don't you add the 1/2 in to be sewn in the seam?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  9 місяців тому +1

      Hello Debbie, I think some people call it a sewing allowance so I have been told... I knew that the vinyl will stretch some and I also did not want any wrinkles from too much material. Standards for automotive and motorcycles are 3/8 inch. Marine are 3/8 to 1/2 inch while furniture can be 1/2 inch. Really it is not rocket science and anyone will do. Just sayin'.
