In a world where ChatGPT is pushing millions of jobs into obsolescence, many are left to wonder: "Is mine I next?"
Today we talk with Rory Groves (a software developer turned small scale farmer) who took a deep dive into the topic of Durable Trades, by writing a book with just that title!
Durable Trades outlines 61 occupations that have stood the test of time and technological advances.
(Spoiler: Shepherding is #1 on the list!!!)

About this Channel: This channel chronicles my journey as a sheep farmer from the very beginning. My primary occupation is in business management. In 2020, I discovered the principles of regenerative agriculture and embarked on a journey with the end goal of building a profitable small farm on 23 acres by 2027. Thank you for joining the journey!

I miss the simple days when 'AI' was something ONLY farmers knew about.
Artificial insemination 😅
Um…really?
😂
That’s a good one!, and most still won’t get it
@@johnhansen8272 Really... It meant Artificial Insemination for a long time, my grandad was an AI tech in the 60s, serving dairy farmers all over!
I'm glad I discovered your channel, it's very interesting.
Despite the language barrier as I'm from Greece and as hard as it is for you to understand Greek it's even more difficult for me to understand English, of course google translators do a good job, although not always.
Coming from a family that had sheep and goats (unfortunately not anymore) I understand very well what you mention in your videos and many times I learn things I didn't know.
Thank you very much for what you teach us but also for what we had forgotten and you remind us.
Greetings from GREECE
Even shepherding isn't AI proof. I've seen projects of cattle herds being gps tracked and drones are used to rotate them around like a shepherd. In this case AI would simply control the drone and rotate the cattle as prescribed.
Building engineer and Undertaker - most durable profession in history
Just wait until they start to argue that engineers will be replaced by AI too haha.
Not really... dead people used to just be burnt where they lived or dropped into a hoke for a Mas grave.... undertakers are fairly new and when it all collapses we will go back to ass graves and burning bodies
I love the non-sheep stuff that you do every so often. Like, I love the farm stuff, but I love when you branch out too. Fun to see folks who aren't one trick ponies!
And I ESPECIALLY love all the good Christian men and women you have on!
I have his book Durable Trades !
It is such a good book. I'm so happy he gives glory to God.
Great episode! I learned so much. Thank you 🙏
Hey @theshepherdess, thanks so much for this update from Rory! I'm currently reading through Durable Trades from your recommendation in previous videos, and as I've been reading it I've been wondering how AI as well as COVID might have affected some of these durable trades since the release of his book. I'm an author, self-publisher, and coach... so I fit into 3 of the 61 :) AI has really disrupted the publishing industry. I would love to hear from you and @thegrovestead your thoughts about the future of those durable trades (Author, Publisher, Coach). We're also looking into establishing a homestead for sustainability.
Electrician, automation tech, carpenter, amateur plumber... jack of all trades Master at 1
I am an office administrator for a CPA firm, building a homestead. I love Paul Gauche!
Smart people.
Great book! I read this a few weeks back. Only increased my drive to become a full time shepherd/farmer.
Great information and conversation.
Well worth the listen!
Thank you... Really good info/Video..
One of your best episodes!
Good topic. Thanks.
Good video….. thanks so much
very educational
thank you
Two Thumbs up lol lol. Here you go lol. Great topic. I tell people to get prepared for Ai taking there jobs.. people will need to learn new skills for the new world. Many will get left behind 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️. Good stuff Shepardess👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. BTW…Getting my first animals in about a week. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Very wise observing this topic.
My trade is a chef. And I breed Aussie White sheep for meat production , farm to plate !
Happy New Year everyone 🎉🎊🎉🎊🕛🎉🕛🎊🎉
I feel like AI will liberate a lot of people and create a ton of new jobs that don't exist in our imaginations today. As an example of such a phenomenon, the advent of UA-cam created the profession of being a UA-camr, which literally did not exist before the 2010s. So many of the white collar folks who get replaced by AI will move on to new professions. It's not all doom and gloom when it comes to AI.
Nice
Medical billing and small farming
AI isn't about replacing jobs, its about replacing population.
Lol looking forward to this one! 😂🐑
👍💪🙏

I’ve always had an affinity for work that was ‘real’ as in part of life itself…something you could share with your community and was tangible. I love intelectual work and study history as a hobby but it doesn’t make me feel connected to the growth of my family and community… so i went into birth work and love it. That’s one durable job, midwives!
Hi, I'm from Uzbekistan. Can I get a job at your company job? I love this job. Thanks for the answer
Lord Protect us from this A.i revolution.. We know you are the King of Kings. Gives us wisdom..
Amen.
Terrifying

Electrician/ sheep/goat
what a way to invest with u ??
I'm project mgr full-time, working from home office. I run dog kennel, raise chickens and sheep on my dmall ranch aka farm. My prayernisntonretire from proj mgr job and work my kennel and ranch full-time..
When you're a hammer, every problem is a nail. .. AI will enhance jobs, improve productivity, just like a tractor multiplies the work a farmer can do. Certainly shelter/food/etc jobs will be needed but many current complex systems can be simplified to enable a robot to do it (example given in the video was installing kitchen counters. Force the apartments into three styles/sizes and thus the robots will fit three counters to become very efficient at installing counters). Thus AI might decide to feed humans 'Tasty Wheat' (Matrix Film mush food) because it can grow, store, and prepare it for the humans they are in charge of 'raising'. Of course, AI skills will increase over time too.
The AI only replaces the "sheep"
You said"a prayer of mine" God I'd good... my 6yr old said don't you wish xxxx.... I said no I don't. Why not? Bc wishing is witchcraft, I pray this or that will happen

Your naive if don't think that chat GPT will won't improve so vastly and once used as brains for robots that it can't replace all jobs. Your talking about human dexterity jobs that will be protected. NOT
Manual workers have more time.
Anyone else get the Seedtime commercial? 😁 Yes, AI technology is going to find a way to get involved with farming.
I got to talk to someone today who is living the dream. He's got an established orchard with support for each tree because it gets really windy in Idaho. New seedless grapes that are looking amazing, and a berry patch that is so big I couldn't have dreamed of a better one! He wants to help people prepare and sadly most people don't even know what's coming up in the next few years.
Can I work for you for free for 6 months?
Haha "learn to code" I have worked in the software industry for 10 years specifically in Robtic Process Automation and can tell you its not the plumbers and carpenters that should be worrying. If you went to college and you are "knowledge worker" better learn to weld. It's ironic .
Another Narcissist
Owning the “dirt” is where it’s at. Farmable ground is always going to be needed. Humans need to eat. Whether it’s for ranching or tillable acreage. They also say it’s one of, if not the most “safest” investment you can make in the real estate game. Just ask ole Bill Gates. Lol
I am a full time rancher and farmer. 42 years old. Run Cattle on private ground and BLM allotments and we farm Alfalfa and grain hay for the premium dairy and horse market. And No, I didn’t inherit any of it. It’s all from my wife’s and my own hard work, blood, and lots of tears. If you have a dream, seize the day. Carpe Diem.
Calve on friends. (Or lamb on ;) )
I live close to Paris Texas and they are selling farms left and right to solar companies
