    I think you two have done amazing. I would like to recommend you get some flat webbing to use for your jack lines. The big advantage is it is flat, so it won't roll under your feet like a round line will, so you can keep it on full time, so it's there when you need it.

    Congratulations! Wait til you get a bigger boat, even more fun. A good heavy full keel cruising boat is what you two need.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому +1

      For this trip yes, but for 99% of what we usually do, it would be too heavy. Maybe once we retire and can take off for long trips. We're working people, so trips like this are hard to do... we had two days in Key West and then had to head back. We sailed for five days of the seven day vacation. A boat that can cruise at 8-10 knots would get us there in half the time, so stay tuned!

    @williamwuolo8926 Рік тому

    Salut! Great video of course. You get to understand basic details like taking down the main in the narrow channel or why you needed to stay close hauled and keep motoring. How about that rip rap at the marina? It would have been terrible if you sliced open your haul after that ling journey. I guess you don't have radar which I guess would have picked up those non-reporting fishing boats?

      I wish we had more time off to go for a few weeks and just bounce around, but 2.5 days there, 2.5 back, that leaves two days to actually be there, so sailing trips like this while also having a job is hard to do.

  • @mikewalker1081

    great vid, I was going to ask if a larger heavier boat would have been more comfortable, but looked like the cat was having a rough go of it too

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому +1

      yea, I spoke to that guy via VHF and he sounded like he it was too rough... so just imagine being in a 28' boat. The camera just doesn't do it justice, so seeing that 48' boat diving into the water gives you an idea.

    • @mikewalker1081
      @mikewalker1081 Рік тому

      @@AdventuresInParadise wow,, that certainly puts it into perspective, so I guess a bigger and heavier boat sometime in the future? mono or cat?

  • @SpaceFrawg
    @SpaceFrawg Рік тому

    My understanding is that the handheld units receive AIS, and are unable to transmit AIS. If you were transmitting AIS the fishing vessels that had turned their transmitters off would know your location before they visually saw you. A good radar reflector is a good idea too.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому +1

      We had the reflector so they should have been able to see us five miles out. Right, the Ais is only for us to see them. I also spoke to them and mentioned I could not see them and one told me over the radio they keep their Ais off unless they see other ships. Once I called for "any fishing boat that could hear me" on the radio when I saw them, and after three tries, a sailor who was miles in front of us replied saying he passed them a while ago. It made me wonder if they don't even want to say who they are on the radio as out of five ships non answered except for the sailing boat and he was further away.

    • @SpaceFrawg
      @SpaceFrawg Рік тому +1

      @@AdventuresInParadise I'm sure that it is, as you say in the video, the fishing vessels not wanting to broadcast their location to the competition. Two key things to consider, given that fact, is that they are still monitoring AIS even if they are not transmitting, so if it were night and/or bad weather it would be a really good idea to be transmitting AIS yourself... not only for the fishing vessel issue but all the smaller boats with receive only capability. The other thing would be a 'good' radar reflector, one that is much better than the minimum required OEM type.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому

      I think it was $10,000 when we bought it. At the time, that was about average for an '85 O'Day 28, but they ranged over and under that, also location seemed to make the price change.

  • @kaykay730
    @kaykay730 Рік тому

    great video, will you be considering a larger boat in the future?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому

      We have had that in the works for a while, but it's hard because the wait for larger slips is years long, so it's maybe a year out, or more.

      @anthonycenteno2200 Рік тому

      Is your current boat trailerable?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  Рік тому

      @@anthonycenteno2200 Yes, but the trailer is silly... you can find it online.. search for O'day 28 on trailer. It's not something you'd do on a regular bases... it's over 10' wide so I think you need special lights and signs.
