  • Project Pat Speaks On Jay-Z • Memphis Legend Project...
Project Pat stopped by The Hip Hop Uncensored podcast in order to talk about New York's loss of control over Hip Hop and why the South will continue to run Hip Hop Forever. Project Pat started his career on Juicy J's early releases alongside DJ Paul in early 1990s. After spending several years behind bars for robbery and then disappearing from recording, Project Pat reemerged with his solo album Ghetty Green on his brother's Hypnotize Minds record label in 1999. He was an associate member of Juicy's Three 6 Mafia group. His first mainstream recognition came in 2000 when he performed the hook for the hit song "Sippin' on Some Syrup".

The egos in early-mid 2000s NYC got totally fucking out of control and the violence compounded with the incoming police initiative to protect incoming white hipsters from us blacks/browns made it so the whole city imploded in terms of hip-hop. The south new how to chill and just make bangers that made people feel good again. All that "who got more money than who" and arguing on Hot 97 all day got corny.

He’s absolutely right!! The reason why New York lost hip hop is because you gotta be hot to get support in the east coast but in the south they support each other regardless especially if the artist has a following!!! New York didn’t accept the south, Midwest or the west coast in the early 90s and that caused anger in those regions and they said screw New York and did their own thing and it worked!! Also you got gangsters and goons everywhere! You had dudes in the south and in the west coast who was straight killers and making millions in the dope game and they also had a story to tell and the east coast didn’t want to respect it!! These dude’s outside New York ain’t sweet and they also had their own swag and couldn’t really relate to New York this is why a lot of people especially in the south and the west coast didn’t respect New York!!

New York and tri-state area was about the classic albums, killer bars and swag which the south is all about banging singles and club hits.. But one thing I see in the south that artists will do collab and making money with each other which east coast cats wasnt! Up north is all about crown and always forget about all money left on the table not collab with everyone they can while they are hot.. 50 cent say it best that when lil wayne did it around 08 and 09, that was some hole ass shit because he did bunch of collab with everyone! Compared to the South and other regions New York Rap has always been more reliant on sampling as opposed to creating your own distinct dope sound. Tighter copyright laws made sampling less accessible and New York fell off because they couldn't adapt or change with the times. No new sounds or trends have come out of New York since the 90s.

The only reason the east ain't running hip hop, is because hip hop has become too main stream. & people no longer listen to lyrics anymore. This generation is proving that right now. Skillz no longer is a must have to make a so called hit. You can just fart over a club beat now, & it becomes a hit. Girl did you here that new song by Mr. AssHole called Fart. That's my jam. If they could auto tune the Fart, GAME OVER. While the east rappers are held to a much higher standard than both east & south. It's a proven fact, Nas is the perfect example, if you are him & get too commercialized, then you're considered a sell out. Not keeping it real. & then the so called fans will turn their backs on them, yet will still be buying 95 South type music from southern artist that made them commercialized & are classified as rappers. It's a double standard. Because as judging by lyrics, the south can't fk with the east. There's only a handful of lyricist from the south. Scarface Andre, TI & then you really have to to think hard to name others after those 3. If any.

*A Ranking of the 4 Major Regions in the Rap Game From the Strongest Region to the Weakest:*
-*#1 the South* : No region does it better, the most creative of the 4 major regions. No region is more diverse in terms of sounds and styles than the South, no region has created more Rap subgenres than the South and no region has had a longer reign than the South.
-*#2 the East Coast* : This region has always found a way to stay relevant, even at times when they aren't the top region.
-*#3 the West Coast* : The West has a noticeable lack of technically proficient rappers compared to the other regions which is a knock against that region from the perspective of stylistic diversity. They also tend to go through periodic droughts where they only have one or two rappers.
-*#4 the Midwest* : The weakest of the major regions, the only region that has never had a reign. There's never been an era when the charts were dominated by Midwest artist or by a Midwest sound. The Midwest is also the only region that has never developed any identifiable sounds that represent their region which is a major blow from a production standpoint(The South has Crunk, Trap etc.; the East Coast has Break Beat, Boom-bap etc.; the West Coast has G Funk, Gangster etc.).

I agree with Pat NY will always be the founder and mediator of rap hands down I have heard some of the coldest lyrics and flows from NY rappers real reason why a lot of rappers got their chance battle rap but now in this day and age South rappers are having more success when the west coast was hungry and started getting hot the south was cooking to get in the conversation of hip hop all love to the pioneers all the way up to Jay Nas and everybody else from NY but South rappers are hungry like he said Lil Wayne maybe the only one I think who proves that the most 20 something odd years later still dropping bangers and the world follows it all to say at any given time a new Biggie or Jay can come and revive NY rap but until then The South got it on lock NY will always be home of hip hop but like everything else in life there will always be evolution

Thank the lord for Outkast, Ti, Ludacris, Master P, UGK and few others. They experimented with sounds and styles even being from the south. You leave it up to souther rappers and they will use the same sound, flow and style forever. The trap sound become a thing in 2010 and they it's still being used today. They beat snap and Crunk tll the wheels fell off. Southern Hip Hop especially modern day does not evolve. We need a new region out even country to come and give us a new sound.
