They'd be worse than Psychic and Mega Drain anyways since Butterfree has extremely poor Attack and both types are physical in the first 3 gens. You'd still end up running non-STAB moves.
In my first nuzlocke in pokemon yellow, when I was around 13 years old, Butterfree was definitely my early game MVP that didn't even fall off later on. I considered boxing him after Surge's fight, mainly because I had my team firmly planned out and "one use of PokeCenter every Poke Center" forced me to plan my grinding very carefully, but... this little dude earnt his right to stay in the team after surviving a fookin Selfdestruct from Hiker's Geodude in the Rock Tunnel. Butterfrees are just built different, ultimate little dudes.
This give me the idea than they put Mimic in saffron and give venomoth to Sabrina just to give the player the chance to beat alakazam with any Pokémon and don't get stock
I've a real soft spot for Butterfree. In later gens it's surprisingly useful, since Compound Eyes makes Sleep Powder incredibly accurate, which gives it a lot of utility as a catching mon. It also gets some pretty good STAB attacks which makes it really good in certain late-game fights, even when it's stats should say otherwise.
That rival fival battle was absolutely bonkers. Gen 1 mechanics, chain missing, super luck and super unluck weaving back and fourth, and a sweep with god RNG at the end.
Butterfree is fr such a fun Pokémon. All the annoying powder moves, it’s underdog status, and gen 1 psychic is always nice to spam. Definitely my favorite Bug type. Very fun video to watch..
I physically cannot wrap my head around the last battle..... what!? All hail Butterfree! BTW that Psychic mimic was actually freaking genius! Nice run.
You know, if there truly is an infinite number of parallel universes out there, that means, mathematically speaking, there is a universe out there in which you had a run where every single move the opponent made throughout the entire playthrough got a Gen 1 miss.
Actually not. The number of universes is not infinite, just a very big number defined by David Hilbert I believe. Since the chances for that to happen are so small, it is likely that there is no universe where that happened :/
@@hammerstix5791 Depending where you derive your theorem from. If you just have this idea then ye sure, but there is no evidence or hint in this direction. @@SonicEndouRed I mean, Butterfree isnt gender-locked like some pokemon or genderless like most legends. So him/her is accurate since those are the genders it can be
You predicted correctly the amount of help Butterfree would need on the end gane and leveled accordingly. I think thats way better than having to retry 50 times the elite 4. Its probably true that a more precise ranking comes from doing minimun battles and then leveling during the Elite 4, but backtracking can be more time consuming. Dunno, I like these videos more this way.
That ending was one of the most entertaining ends to a run I've seen. Clutch double Psychic, with multiple special drops and Jrose losing his mind was fantastic.
It's very funny that you're right that butterfree is used often, but not for long, because in many games its actually quite good! The combo of compound eyes+sleep powder can be very solid in later games, and personally since I do a lot of nuzlockes, it really helps to catch Pokémon, though I usually lose it to a wild Pokémon at some point honestly. After watching, I gotta say butterfree performed way better than I expected honestly, looks just super convincing as to why butterfree is less of a Jagen and more of an Oifey
Sorry to tell you but it doesn't learn a new move until level 28, and all it has till then are normal moves. So no easy Brock win, which is usually a death sentence. It does start with disable so he may be able to do something with that vs the Geodude, but onix is a lot less likely to be a win. To my eye, it appears to be a worse starmie
Great video! Love the color pallete. Love your obvious affection for this little bug. Love the repeated discussion of how OP psychic is turned out to be foreshadowing for DOUBLE PSYCHIC ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SKY. Go Butterfree!!!
One thing I always look forward to in these runs is what you name the rival, I love that you usually think of some specific joke about the pokemon and then find its counterpart. For this run I was expecting the rival to be named "Slavery" or something like that , but "Free defeated Quality" is even better.
So Butterfree did surprisingly okay for itself despite usually being a Pokemon people ditch past the early game. Shocking! Yet vindication for Butterfree too. Nice to know!
surprisingly okay? dude, it did amazing when you remember bug types were/are trash. the fact it was far superior to a starter is proof enough of it being good. sure it has no stab move, and its kinda underpowered, but on the other hand, it has access to ALOT of great moves, that allow it to cheese most troubles. compare that to charizard or scyther, who both required a handfull amount of brute force and luck.

@@justinmadrid8712 It's literally a Bug-type, so yes it's an insect. Besides, who says that the definition of "insect" is necessarily the same in the Pokémon world as it is in ours? Also: what the hell were you thinking telling a *literal Entomologist* what is and isn't an insect?
@@AhsimNreiziev I may not be an Entomologist, but as a kindergarten graduate, I can tell you for a fact that insects have six legs. Also, 'real' insects exist in the Pokemon world. For example, there is a mosquito in the Old Amber item, and 'real' butterflies can be seen flying around in Sword and Shield and X/Y. Multiple Pokemon are stated to prey on bugs, such as Horsea. I really don't think they mean Horsea is eating Caterpie and Weedle in the ocean. In the anime, you can see Pidgey eat a worm in the first episode, so 'real' animals exist, meaning Pokemon are not insects, they are Pokemon. 'Real' insects exist along side of Pokemon. Butterfree is not an insect. It is a bug-type Pokemon. Also, I was just making a stupid joke lol.

Loved your energy and excitement through the video. Watching your reactions to the numerous close calls was a whole lot of fun, and it's so heartwarming to know even though Butterfree is only consistently good in early game can still hold their own in a solo run as someone who used one in many runs back in the day
Red and Blue have level 1 Gyarados have Hydro Pump and I think they did that to make him a huge threat if you ever fished one with a Super Rod. Since he is still one of the most feared pokemon in the lore it makes some sense, but they fixed that in Yellow so he gets Tackle instead
I've never seen a lvl 1 gyarados. Never knew you could fish one out in red and blue. I played the hell out of it back in 99. That'd be a hell of a suprise. 😂
These are probably the best solo runs on UA-cam. I really like how it’s not just clickbaity random challenge. It’s actually really fun comparing each Pokémon wondering where it will come in on the tier list Being shocked where a Pokémon comes. Like gastly for example and how just because a Pokémon is unable to learn one move it can be the difference between A and C or even D tier.
Butterfree is one of the biggest cases of Pokemon defying expectations. It’s actually quite strong in later gens with Quiver dance/sleep powder. Love you Butterfree, never change.
This thing was my goto for half the totems because Compoundeyes = 97.5% Accurate Sleep Powder into basically anything I wanted. Swept Hala's team with Quiver Dance Air Slash. Wasn't too helpful vs the champion sadly *cough*stealthrock*cough* but it was still great. tbh I didn't think it would last all game but it worked just fine. Also I didn't understand why people thought Guzma was so hard but then realized not everyone has a x4 bug resist with a setup move and Air Slash :)
I love that the #2 solo runner in the biz, the dude responsible for developing so much of the metagame and community around it, is just chilling down here, barely noticeable.
This was an entertaining run, i'm happy to see butterree getting some love. It has been my favorite pokemon since pokemon blue and i always use it in every game it exists in, alongside beedrill. Ya i was that awkward bug trainer kid while everyone else was obsessed with mewtwo and alakazam.
That champion battle... From the mimic strat to the ending time was so dumb that it was Brilliant and I loved it. I had a good day and this was just the cherry on top, a great way to start winding the day down. With that said though, I would like to see the moth version of our butterfly friend does in this one. (Venomoth) It has better stats and a better move pool could be good as well.
Your strategy against Alakazam in the last battle was either the top of the Galaxy brain meme, or the bottom of the Galaxy brain meme, can't really figure out which
In Yellow it starts with Tackle only. In Red/Blue it starts with Bite, DragonRage, Leer, HydroPump, which is its full moveset prior to Hyperbeam at 52. This also means you could delete a move and relearn it later
As somebody whos already done this as a casual playthrough cause caterpie is my fav pokemon I already know this is possible and will most definately watch somebody else do it again.

Butterfree is easily my favorite gen1 Pokemon and one of my favorites of any gen. Its movepool in gen1 drives me bonkers, though. It really feels like they wanted to make it a Bug/Psychic but didn't for whatever reason. I would assume for balance reasons, but, uh... Looking at the rest of gen1, that seems unlikely, so your guess is as good as mine. Hearing you express concern over Koga was absolutely HILARIOUS for me seeing as in the same run with that Butterfree, I was able to completely no-sell Koga, likely at a lower level too since I was still using my starter. He did manage to poison me, but because of how poison works in gen1, I still didn't take any damage from it. I really don't think you should've bothered with trying to put the Muk to sleep, not with Sleep Powder's garbage accuracy. You only need a single dodge/useless move, after all, since it's a two-shot. Yea, okay, that e4 run was absolutely hilarious. Butterfree is truly blazing it there lol. Boooooooo on that placement. I mean you're probably right but also I'm incredibly biased.

I've been digging these daily videos
How does this not have more likes
@@poisondax4771Gay
8 months later and I’m still Earthquaking them.
Same
The ending was hysterical great run
man i never thought id ever see a level 64 butterfree take down a level 65 charizard with such ease. this just shows how broken gen 1 is
This month of Jrose videos has been a blast! Love the content and find myself watching every single video as soon as it comes out!
That ending was perfect. All hail the month of Jrose!
This Butterfree run comes exclusively from Viridian Forest, and gets the OG Bug Catcher official stamp of approval!👍
I physically cannot wrap my head around the last battle..... what!? All hail Butterfree!
BTW that Psychic mimic was actually freaking genius! Nice run.
You know, if there truly is an infinite number of parallel universes out there, that means, mathematically speaking, there is a universe out there in which you had a run where every single move the opponent made throughout the entire playthrough got a Gen 1 miss.
metapod run
How many percent is one in infinite? Or isnt there infinite universes where that happened?
Actually not. The number of universes is not infinite, just a very big number defined by David Hilbert I believe.
Since the chances for that to happen are so small, it is likely that there is no universe where that happened :/
@@jacobreichert836 it is objectively impossible for us to know that there's not an infinite number of universes.
@@hammerstix5791 Depending where you derive your theorem from.
If you just have this idea then ye sure, but there is no evidence or hint in this direction. If you come to that conclusion because of a certain quantum interpretation then there is a finite number, until proven otherwise ,Hilberts theory stands.
I like how this was one of the few runs to actually do the gyms in the intended order also that ending was amazing who knew Butterfree had it in him/her
it not him/her
@@SonicEndouRed I mean, Butterfree isnt gender-locked like some pokemon or genderless like most legends. So him/her is accurate since those are the genders it can be
I love how excited Jrose gets when things so right.
I grew up with Red version and seeing the Blue version color palette is so bizarre lol
Loving your content dude
That ending was one of the most entertaining ends to a run I've seen. Clutch double Psychic, with multiple special drops and Jrose losing his mind was fantastic.
BRILLIANT end with the psychic mimic lol bravo Jrose!!
Loving the content. Holding on for electabuzz. Also keen on seeing if Golduck can post a decent time.
Yes! My all-time favourite pokemon. Been waiting for this one.
One thing I always look forward to in these runs is what you name the rival, I love that you usually think of some specific joke about the pokemon and then find its counterpart. For this run I was expecting the rival to be named "Slavery" or something like that , but "Free defeated Quality" is even better.
31:11 I didn't know you could encounter Rattata in the water at the shoreline, I love this game
That Fire Emblem comparison was top-notch!
@@marcosdhelenoisn't he psychic/bug type? Psychic is his stab move , no?
@@gerboog just checked just to be sure, and nop, its bug/flying. also, cant learn fly.
@@marcosdheleno thats crazy lol
It learns just the right moves for it to work.
Best video by far I love your laugh towards the end man I’m happy for you on this one
Thank you Jrose. I cant sleep and this brightens my night!
Man you really are my favorite pokemon dude on youtube. I can’t believe how much time and energy you put into making this simple series interesting and how every episode is basically a different journey for the new pokemon.
As an Entomologist I approve this run
Butterfree is not an insect. It only has 4 legs.
@@AhsimNreiziev Awckswelly....
@@AhsimNreiziev it's ok. Just let them have their fun. If they get enjoyment being all technical on a UA-cam comment about a Butterfree let them.
I still approve this run.
Mate this is was one of your best videos ever. Hearing you enjoy the run is epic!!!!
Yes! Finally a Butterfree run! I remember using a Butterfree during my first run of Pokémon Blue as a kid, and I liked it a lot although I can't remember why. Same thing happened for me in Pokémon Gold with Quagsire.
I love when you get a victory off a joke attempt (ie Zubat using horn drill to win) you’re so happy and I’m so happy for you when it happens
Just what I needed to get through another rough day at the warehouse. Jrose you have been a saving grace this month!
Same here my guy
Loved your energy and excitement through the video. Watching your reactions to the numerous close calls was a whole lot of fun, and it's so heartwarming to know even though Butterfree is only consistently good in early game can still hold their own in a solo run as someone who used one in many runs back in the day
If this released close to the Beedrill episode you could've done something like "float like a Butterfree, sting like a Beedrill"
I've always loved Butterfree. Good stuff, dude.
The sheer, unbridled joy in your voice as you get Butterfree across the line there. I fuckin' love it dude.
I love Butterfree, especially in gen 3. It just puts things to sleep immediately.
These are probably the best solo runs on UA-cam.
I really like how it’s not just clickbaity random challenge.
It’s actually really fun comparing each Pokémon wondering where it will come in on the tier list
Being shocked where a Pokémon comes.
Butterfree, Level 69
Sharp Beak
Compoundeyes
- Quiver Dance
- Sleep Powder
- Bug Buzz
- Air Slash
== ALOLAN POKEMON HALL OF FAME ==
This thing was my goto for half the totems because Compoundeyes = 97.5% Accurate Sleep Powder into basically anything I wanted. Swept Hala's team with Quiver Dance Air Slash. Wasn't too helpful vs the champion sadly *cough*stealthrock*cough* but it was still great. tbh I didn't think it would last all game but it worked just fine. Also I didn't understand why people thought Guzma was so hard but then realized not everyone has a x4 bug resist with a setup move and Air Slash :)
really nice to hear you laughing a lot during this one, some can seem a bit of a slog but can tell you enjoyed making this video
Alright! I'm so ready for this. Thanks for doing this run JRose!
I love that the #2 solo runner in the biz, the dude responsible for developing so much of the metagame and community around it, is just chilling down here, barely noticeable.
I thought I'd find you here Scott! Thought of ya the second I saw this lol
The minute I saw Alakazam come out with mimic unused I was like ... "wait ... surely not?"
I can't believe that didn't just break the game tbh
Bro, the last battle is awesome! 🔥🔥🔥
Butterfree, my second favorite bug pokemon, perfect!
I'm excited to watch this.
Butterfree is the superior gen 1 bug, but man, I don't think anyone would ever use mimic like that in the final battle
I love how FUN this run was, a lot of crazy and funny things happened.
Butterfree could be taught Teleport in Gen 1?!
Dude that’s awesome
Here's a funny one: Shellder can learn Teleport. How does a clam teleport itself, let alone two people?
Showed up and got smacked with a Fire Emblem reference.
JRose, you’re killing it this month! With that intro you are my favourite youtuber
I'm pumped for this one! Butterfree is one of my favorite mons.
"here's why I don't go to the Pokemon Center to-- OOH SHINY THING!" This entire commentary, summarized
I have a soft spot for Butterfree as it featured on my team for Yellow for the whole game
I love your videos man. your narrative style and genuine enthusiasm make each one a treat to watch
Curious, is the month of JRose going til the end of December or is it 30 days / 30 videos?
Also dig the FE reference in the beginning too
Your strategy against Alakazam in the last battle was either the top of the Galaxy brain meme, or the bottom of the Galaxy brain meme, can't really figure out which
16:21
Hydro Pump is probably a level 1 move for Gyarados. Maybe you should do a Gyarados run and see!
Why is the juggler juggling his pokemon?
"But becomes useless in the endgame"
Laughs in 'absolutely carried my team through the E4 and Champ at lvl52 WITHOUT Sleep Powder'
Commenting at the start here, I've been watching through the playlist in order and have been so excited to finally get to this one.
The hell, where's my new Jrose video?
Gen 1 Pokemon: "Ah, yes, Butterfree. That adorable little butterfly, who gives us an early taste of evolution, before its limited stats force us to part ways. Why, I'm sure we all remember how sad Ash was, when he had to let his go, even though it, too, had long-started to falter, in battle. Let us cut to it now, in its natural habitat.
Butterfree (turning to us with glowing eyes of power, away from the Dragonite it just sleep powdered unconscious): Free?
Today's video will be out right about... NOW
So good! Also you laughing at things that happen in your runs gives me energy 😂
GET THE BUTTER, BECAUSE ITS TIME FOR THE FREEEEEE (ok that was a horrible joke but still)
I can't believe it's not butter, free
I've literally waited years for you to do this thank you so much for your content everything that you do and you're such an amazing content creator
This vid should be named "I make a lot of mistakes and butterfree survives me". Fun vid no doubt! Loved it!
This was the most enjoyable run! I love it! Butterfree is a legend!
*This is an absolutely fascinating series. Thanks for your service brosef*
I remember leaning heavily on Butterfree on my first play through of Pokémon Blue back when I was a kid discovering Pokémon. This was so validating to see Butterfree do so well over 20 years later
same, buterfree was incredibly effective as a psychic for those who didnt know enough about the game.
I did play POkemon Crystal with only Butterfree and it was awesome. B-free is one of my all time Fav pokemons. Keep up the Content i´m loving it. Amazing Job!
Butterfree? More like GOATFree. How the hell did this even happen? It absolutely mangled almost every fight it had! I also didn't know Mimic could copy a move you already had. Really awesome run.
