Episode 135 of Love At First Scent
This was a UA-cam Live broadcast streamed on Sunday 18th October 2020. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, we celebrated the upcoming 100 year anniversary of the one and only Chanel No. 5 by focussing on the original extrait (composed by Ernest Beaux), the eau de toilette, the eau de parfum and the latest incarnation, L’Eau. The wonderful Eau Premiere version was featured in its own video some time ago (see below).

    Extrait 8:00

You asked for a blotter update, so here it is:
    - The 'core trio' (ie the extrait, the edt and the edp) have behaved as you'd expect them to. The edt is thinning out (using those woods to stretch out the aldehydes as far as possible); the edp remains more rounded, fuller and more concerned with the florals; and the extrait is largely 'intact', in the sense that several hours after application, it's still presenting a cohesive interplay between the aldehydes, the florals and the sandalwood. The L'Eau is the least pleasing, settling on a light, 'transparent wood' base. As was said in the broadcast, this is the version that veers furthest away from the No. 5 DNA. But the other three are as perfect an expression of olfactory art as we'll ever hope to find. And I so hope they're still around in another 100 years!

    Thanks for watching.

I have a pretty old extrait bottle, I bought it sealed and it's heavenly. Here's the best jasmine note I've ever smelled. There's a civet and a real sandalwood at the base. It's amazing!

I am very late to this party but this is an epic video! I pompously adopted No. 5 as my signature when I was 15 without ever having smelled it. I read a Chanel biography and was hooked on the fantastical story, and my parents played along and gifted me a bottle of the EdT for my birthday. It was love at first smell. It bowled me over, I couldn't stop sniffing my arm and wouldn't shut up about it; powdery, sparkling, soapy, floral, warm, woody, it is everything. You are right with the doctor who analogy, the 90ies EdT will always be my favourite. Thank you for this wonderful overview!

I’m only 30 and I’d heard stories from my mum that my Nan used to wear no5 when my mum was younger and it wasn’t very well liked because it was really heavy and strong. So I was really surprised when I tried it on Tuesday that I liked it. In fact I liked it so much that I purchased the original no5 the l’eau no5 and the no5 eau premiere along with chanel coco.

UA-cam recommended videos about Chanel No. 5 since I looked it up, and again the wise sage of perfumes popped up again in my video choices. I had recently gotten the EDP, plus the lotion and shower gel. I absolutely love it. It's in my holy trinity of fragrances now, along with Shalimar and L'air Du Temps. I don't know why, but the classic perfumes like those three work the best on me. Maybe due to the notes in it. I've tried stuff like Good Girl and Poison Girl, and they are pleasant, but I feel like it's a bit like trying on a style of clothing that is nice but isn't really "you", whereas the classic fragrances feel like it's fitting my personality and style authentically. I do like some more modern fragrances like Cool Water, Lucky You and they are fantastic, though there's something about my top 3 that feels just right. I love how No. 5 is like a bridge between Shalimar and L'air Du Temps for me. I love the comparison of No. 5 being like Galadriel of Lord of the Rings! It is quite a light, bright, and magical fragrance. I also get some mid century elegance to it as well, plus 20s avant garde vibes, and definitely a very French springtime vibe. Love it. :)

No. 5 EDC - there's lots of it unopened still around. Get a sealed bottle from the early 70's, real civet, pretty much the original Ernst Beaux formula, as he conceived, a good bottle will transport you. This was what Marilyn wore to bed, not the pure parfum (which is another thing altogther and just awesome).

Eau premiere works but when I copaired l'eau side by side to eau premiere it worked much better on me and while it dosen't smell very much like No.5 up close or on paper, I keep getting little No.5 wafts through out the day that are like a hug from my Gran.

Mr P! You're about to hit 10,000 subscribers! Wouldn't it be fun if it happened on the one year anniversary of this video, which celebrates the 100 year anniversary of No. 5?
Funnily enough I just watched another video of yours where you were talking about a suitable scent for Galadriel. And I was thinking of Chanel and aldehydes immediately. I think she would wear No. 22. Aragorn would wear Dior Fahrenheit, Gandalf SL Serge Noire, Arwen Apres L'Ondee and Sauron something with a prominent oud note.
On the subject though: I've never smelt the extrait but was always very enamored with Eau Premiere. I recently got a full bottle of Eau de Cologne and it's a tie now. I like the EdT but it's gone within minutes.
