You explain really well! There's just so much to think about... People who actually enjoy dancing must have a dancing gene. I get it that after a while it might become more or less automatic, but I still think that for someone not into dancing it's harder to memorize the motions and to move with grace on top of that. And then, for every new dancing partner there would be some learning curve, and pressure to get things right. Then there's the gender roles, and I guess it is what it is so no use complaining, but if anything I'd much rather lead instead xD
Brilliant! As a musician I am having trouble counting the 1,2,3,4,5,6 along with a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8! I guess we will just concentrate on the S,S,QQ,S :-) Really well done! Subscribed!
Excellent--and only you on youtube have thought to give us the rock step for exigencies such as "What if you end up at the wall or are blocked by another couple?" I hope you tell us how to give good clues to your partner of your next planned step/move/variation.
Wow!!! You make it look so easy, and graceful!!! Thanks!!! What about the music?!... what sorts of tunes, beats and tempos, are commonly played, for this kind of dancing?.... It looks like that "rock-step" turn winds up being about 90 degrees per cycle. Is there any options for turning in the opposite direction, or is that even possible (allowable)?!.... How do you know if there is enough room on the dance floor for all of the couples that are dancing? How should they begin, (be oriented), so that they can avoid unnecessary collisions?!....
Hi Jonathan, Phrasing is slightly different from following the "beats of music". So in this case it is a 6-count basic step, and so after you finish it the new basic starts on 7,8, but that's okay because we're not trying to be perfectly phrased, instead just to stay "on the beat"... Phrasing only matters if you're trying to hit a certain mark in the music, like for showcase... This is just for social dancing.
Sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
@Vincenzo Ayaan i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Don't count 1, 2, up to 8. The foxtrot is on 3/4 time, so count up to 6. Each slow step gets two beats and each quick step gets one beat. Thus, SSQQ = 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6.
"slow slow quick quick" is misleading. The slow and quick steps, i.e., walk, walk, side, close, are each 2 beats. Same for forward, rock, side, close. He does it that way in the beginning, like counting to 8, then changes it to 6 beats around 6 minutes in.

How to step dance
Very nicely done however close UPS will improve the Video
Yes, thanks for feedback. Will keep that in mind. We do have close ups in some of other videos!
Very confusing. My mistake. The Foxtrot is a syncopated dance step, counting 6 beats during 2 measures with 8 beats of music. I think.

It looks like dancing is more difficult for the woman since she has to continuously react rather quickly to what the man is doing.

SSQQ means slow slow quick quick?lol
Exactly right! Very good!

Anyway, it doesn't really make sense to count a 6-beat dance step to 4/4 time songs. This instructor is clearly not a musician!
