Fuck that working from the bottom to the top. If I start working in a auto shop, you better pay me more than 20 bucks an hour, even if I'm a lube tech. This ain't a cashier job. Wtf am I gonna do with 13 bucks an hour. If you tell me that I have to do brakes, oil changes, tune ups ,etc, for 13 an hour, ima tell you that all I'm doing is sweeping up the shop....can't believe that Mcdonald workers make more than technicians.
Your absolutely correct. Amazon here starts at 20 an hour and lube tech shops and auto dealerships start at 15 I have proof if I could post it here. Why would anyone go into auto tech business. Dish washers starting pay is more than lube techs. It’s a joke of an industry now. And I worked over 23 years as an auto tech and I say stay away.

@Vic I’m not sure about his case. But majority of lube techs are hourly. So doing a brake job is just work they don’t get paid to do or should do unless it’s for experience. Before I left my shop I was in , they would give up sales such as tires brakes to lube techs to save labor cost and give more money to the shop. The techs got screwed. They will do whatever it takes to save costs even at the expense of Techs.

No one can survive off of $13 - $15 an hour that is why there is a shortage of mechanics. No one can afford rent and food with that pay. He needs to pay his workers better wages or it's not even worth it. Imagine working 40 hours a week and still not being able to pay your bills. Imagine having to also pay for your own tools on top of all of the normal expenses of living. While he mentioned that it takes time to become that experienced technician after they get out of trade school, what he didn't say is that takes about ten years to reach that level. Then another ten years to really start to master the trade that has no finish line to needing to learn new systems and invest in more and more tools.
@@thecardoc100 the only finish line in this industry is to open your own shop, these companies be charging alot to customer's and paying less the employees, then investing that money to open more shops.
@@bcgangs I did just that almost 30 years ago. I did OK, but the expenses of running my own business including scan tools and software updates, insurances and taxes etcetera were far greater than what ended up on the bottom line which of course was my income.

They're paid what's called a "flat rate" usually. Which means if a job is rated to take 20 hours (such as a engine swap), whether you finish in 10 hours or 30 hours, you're paid for 20 hours of work. Also most jobs I see today offer 22 dollars an hour for entry level mechanic with a few benefits, then also there's internships where you work while you learn that pay 18 an hours

You have to pay a living wage for a good mechanic or they won't stay. They will go to the next place that will pay more. It costs too much to live.
I definitely can understand of needing to make a living wage especially today with food and rent through the roof. But you can't start at the top you got to start at the bottom like we did when we were young and with that comes the crappy pay 😔 . To increase their pay they would have to increase our service bill everybody screams out raise the pay but nobody wants to pay the price of it.
@@FairyChild_For_Freedom-Justice Crappy pay 30 years ago went further than it does today. $13-$15 an hour today is not a livable wage… especially with skyrocketing rent, food and gas prices. On top of the economic realities, considering that techs must get an education and certification, $13-$15 an hour makes even less sense. Techs are also expected to buy their own tools, which means they are working to cover that additional expense… And as technology evolves, techs need more proprietary tools in order to service and repair vehicles than they did 30 years ago.
13 $15 an hour and you're charging $120 an hour labor rate. Stop trying to get over, and give them the right percentage; you'll keep your mechanics. if the works getting done' it deserves to get paid for.
True except that labor rate needs to be $280-$320 per hour. As a shop owner I'm the highest in my city at $225 per hour. To pay the technicians we have to get the money from you.

Burger King pays $13 starting down here in northern Alabama and pay and a half for overtime (41 hrs a week or more) and I make $12.50 as a tech no overtime, lunch is mandatory. It’s not bad for me because I have zero bills and just graduated some months ago. But you could never truly make a living off of that. Keep in mind everyone in my shop is treated as/expected to perform as a technician, not an apprentice. New or not. I have pulled engines from VW’s to replace oil seals and have done some transmissions and make less than the fry cooks down the road.

@@cantbuyrespect had that attitude when I made 13, as the sole provider for a family of 3 but sucked it the fuck up and kept going and learning and proving I was worth while as an asset and moving on if I wasn't appreciated at a job. Now make a lot. But if I had given up I wouldn't be here, I'd maybe make a few bucks an hour more in the small picture. Sometimes you gotta eat shit and keep eating it.

Also if you dont buy better tools to do work other then oil changes and tires how do you expect to get a higher paying tech job? Been in that industry for 15 years. It sucks. I would not go back. Not worth being a mechanic, low pay. Have to buy your own tools. Keeping up to date all the time, where other trades are better like plumber, builder and get paid better and less tools needed comparing as a mechanic. Diagnosing problem jobs do take time and on flat rate you can loose. Dealing with customers is another story so many weird people out there, I tell young people not to go into this trade, my only regret in my life is getting into Automotive trade. I'm leaving automotive trade this year after 23yrs.
I left at age 35 after 20 years of busting my hump for ungrateful employers. Now I drive a truck over-the-road and wished I'd done it much sooner.

I had two friends from high school go to UTI to learn and I started as a lube tech. I became a tech before they were finished with the school. And after they came to my work applied and was told they didn’t have experience to be full blown techs so they can be lube techs. There both in other industries now.

The Florida Right to work may be the Problem. Well this is WHAT we pay take it or... I have 40 years experience ASE Master, went to 3 Dealerships and All offers under 25 dollars per. But here the guy says up to 15 dollars per for a oil changer. So a Experienced Tech is Only Worth A few Bucs more..HMMM with a tool box with over 60k worth of tools in it-- So I did ask a dealer why and I got an answer( we dont pay like they do in NY). So I ask him " if this shop is Charging the Same Dollar per hour as in NY then why wont you Pay" The Answer was Because we dont. There was 0 negotiation. I wished him luck. PS yes I guess Im an Old timer that can still Fix anything and soon to retire- but I'm not going to start for less than 30. The younger people today have little Ambition to work or fix cars not like when I was young but they want that 15 dollars per hour.. Why Florida Voted for that is crazy....... GL Peace
shop owners forget to mention their shops aren't temp controlled or they're using lifts from the 1990s or their parts delivery isnt consistent or the favorite techs they feed or the lack of benefits or no tool reimbursement or their sales guys cant stay out of the shop or their bad management runs techs or the terrible warranty pay or the lack of guaranteed hours. Cant imagine why people dont want to work in this field and choose a career that actually pays them their worth

If by hard you mean changing tires because of the physical demands, that would be correct. There is much harder work both physically and mentally that newer technicians (under five years experience) are simply not trained nor sufficiently skilled to do yet.
@@thecardoc100 I just installed a new Transmission in my wife's Honda Civic. It's hard labor and takes skill to complete the Job. Only thing left is the Idle relearn procedure that Honda requires. It's the same as a Gear relearn using a professional scan tool.
@@davidhall3747 That's a good example of both the physical and mental demands of the job. There are tools that help us deal with the physical side that are generally considered shop tools that the average technician working for someone else would not have to buy. The only other thing a senior technician is likely expected to do is rebuild the transmission instead of just replacing it.

This is why I do my own work and maintenance on my vehicles.
Cost too much to turn a wrench . You can sell parts for 15 dollars an hour and never have to spend 10-20 grand on tools.

Why does the double minimum wage rule exist? It exists to prevent unscrupulous employers from passing operating costs to low wage earning employees.
You must get compensated for your breaks also. Every four hours worked you get a 10 minute break plus lunch, the employer needs to pay you for this.
Body techs are in short supply too. I am retired and I get called back to fill in quite often.
It takes around 5 years before you feel comfortable in a trade but with classroom training you might be up and running in2-3 years where you could feel confident and do a good job. A person that doesn't know what they are doing can screw up more than they fix!
Take your time frame estimates to the ten and twenty+ year range and you would be a lot closer to reality.
School and factory training, and still get screwed. The whole industry is fucked. Just drive trucks. Payed the same but spend far less
Five years to get decent, the only thing now with direct injection, high voltage and amperage systems, hybird, and electric vehicles if you make a mistake you could DIE!

That's the point less cars on the road. Nevertheless better learn how to fix majority of things yourself. Only go to shops for big repairs.

I don't see what the big deal is, I worked for a major chain auto repair shop for over 2 years out flagging (but being paid hourly) a lot of the techs on oil changes, tires etc, it was hard work for shit pay. I finally gave up and quit after 2 years of being over looked for promotions to further my career. I went to a shop that paid 13 which isnt much but for an entry level job it's ok. I'm sorry but entry level in this career is shit and if you cant come to terms with that maybe this industry ain't for you. The money comes with experience idk what else to say other that fucking work hard or don't work in this business at all. Like why should we pay 20 an hour for someone who literally drains oil all day?

So during that "quite a bit of time" it takes a new hire to become a full knowledgeable mechanic, ... do customers get a price break for having an inexperienced person working on their car at a lower rate ? NOOOOO ... see and thats the telltale of the real problem. Theres also the issue of "good work" vs "bad work". 25 years working in auto service and i failed to find an employer who would evenly spread the good and the bad to EVERYONE in the shop. Theres more to the story of why mechanics are quitting than what your video showed

So to sum up. You will pay for school and your own tools be criminally underpaid for years, destroy your body and have to learn a complex machine that only gets more complicated as time goes on which will require continued education you will also be responsible for.... yeah no. I was considering this heavily but after hearing about mechanics problems these days i decided to sign up for cdl training instead. Shame, but if that's how the industry is i'll go somewhere that will treat me better.

I've always been curious if an experienced and intelligent auto mechanic with a good work ethic can make over $100k per year if working in a major urban city. I believe the answer is NO. If that's the case, intelligent people with a good work ethic should go to college because making $100k / year in a major city is no big deal.

HVAC pays close to 100k All is great until something goes wrong, then you are called a liar and a thief Chrysler owes me 250k for 20 years of free warranty work. Improvise, adapt, overcome. Electric cars still use tires, brakes, suspension parts, A/C, electrical parts for the gadgets they have. In this field there is always new technology so if you want to be good and master this craft, you need to remain humble and continue to educate yourself.
Tell me you have never been to a Tesla service center or certified body shop without telling me you have never been to a Tesla service center or certified body shop.

My daughter's been waiting for a catalytic converter for her VW Jetta for 4 months now with the dealer. It's bad out there folks but let's not put this on our president let's put it on the industry ,shipping, and the pandemic the world was shut down for nearly two years and we have catch up to do. Apples and oranges. There's a big difference in what you have to invest in to work in those two occupations. A mechanic needs the initial technical education, then must invest in personal tools. Tens of thousands of dollars worth. Of course that is usually built up over time, but it is a continual expense. So is on going training, because technology is constantly evolving. So there is alot of expense involved. You don't just show up and go to work.

Have you ever replaced anything in your car? It's a lot more difficult than doing most things in the restaurant industry. I say that as someone who's worked in both fields. Also, try looking for fancy old folks homes. They pay really good even if the tips are basically none. Super easy to get a job there in today's economy too.
You get 7.25 with tips..and all you do is receive order, bring people there food and clean up the table. A mechanic can lose his life on the job....and even though you get 7.25 a hour you probably still get paid more than 13 an hour since you receive tips, and you don't have to pay weekly bill for tools. Being a auto tech sucks bro. Keep washing them dishes.

Push yourself to make time. My last week as a dealership technician saw me do four 3.8l V6 engines where I needed to replace the camshaft bearings. The short version of the story is all I would have had to do is pull the heads off (16 bolts) and push the pistons out and I would have had a bare block in front of me. So pulling the engine, tearing it apart to that level, and get it all back together running on one day was pushing myself hard enough to break even on the clock hours under warranty. Do you have any idea what that would have paid me if it wasn't warranty? Oh and that also means with no mistakes, because we didn't get paid at all for anything that we had to redo.

A self inflect wound, so you people do not want to pay, and you want kids to enter into your trade, auto mechanic are the fastest changing trade , what a joke. So you need a coolant recovery tank. No the tank do not keep your car from overheating, cars used to have no tanks. You can substitute any container of suitable size.
you could swap in another tank as long it has the correct hoses size for attachment and temp sensor and can handle hot coolant pressure, cause these tanks are pressurized.. and yes the car would overheat without this tank.. but anyway..
😳 they don't want to start at the beginning they want to start at the top. This is the parents fault for raising privileged children you don't start at the top you aim for the top. This isn't anything. So sad these youngins think you're born with the silver spoon you don't have to earn it. 🤮🙄💔
$13-$15 an hour is not a living wage anywhere around where this shop is located…and I’m picking up on some anger issues with the term “silver spoon,” the accusation of laziness and also blaming parents 💁🏻♂️
Everyone blames the parents or work ethic or the new generation so on so on. The problem is there charging 140.00 a hour shop rate and that's across the bored doesn't matter if they are paying a technician 13 a flat rate hour or 25 you still pay the same. I understand there is overhead in all shops, but these dealers are greedy. I was a technician for 25 years. I make more money driving for Uber and I don't have to buy my own tools work when I want go home when I want and take lunch when I want
I started by pushing a broom and doing scut work for cash under the table while still in high school. I kept at it and one day someone handed me a wrench and told me to remove a part. Pretty soon I was actually working on cars, but it took a long time. I advanced due to attrition - someone above me would quit and my duties would expand to fill the gap.
Who the fuck after spend money in school want to start at the bottom. Truck drivers make far more money in a way shorter amount of time. Like fuck that. Pride doesn't pay bills or feed you. Also when you start at the bottom, none of the uppers want to teach shit unless you submit being treated like a fking dog and take bs. Grab CDL go drive a truck. Make money.
As a tech for thirty years and a shop owner for almost twenty these technicians need to get paid, my techs start at $25 per hour I'm willing to pay more although you have to give me more. Nowadays you can't check tire pressures without having to reset an on-board computer which take extra time.
Yes the 15hr sucks but it wouldn’t matter these kids today don’t want to clean up shop and get dirty work there entitled to get mechanic wages right away, but there going to lose every time!!! Everyone starts at bottom!!
Bahaha UPS driver here started at $24/hr. Making more than the guys fixing the trucks 🤣
