  • Dr. Rob Maher, professor of engineering, explains that the Electric Grid functions only when energy production exactly matches energy consumption in that moment. The problem with renewable energy (photovoltaic, wind, hydroelectric, etc.) is that we do not currently have an efficient way to store that energy. Professor Rob Maher joined the MSU Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 2002. A steadfast educator, inventor, and licensed Professional Engineer, his passions include audio engineering, audio forensics, and music. He has been a leader in the audio industry for many years as an entrepreneur, consultant, and a VP of engineering. He holds a BS degree from Washington University-St. Louis, an MS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a PhD from the University of Illinois-Urbana, all in Electrical Engineering. He has written and lectured internationally, and also serves as an expert witness in civil and criminal cases. In his spare time, Rob enjoys music and both road and trail running. He is past-president of the Big Sky Wind Drinkers running club, and a member of the Second String Orchestra (cellist) and the St. James Episcopal Church Choir (bass/baritone). He and his wife, Lynn, have two grown sons. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Storage is fine for balancing supply and demand for the short trem, eg day and night - but useless for covering power shortages which can last for weeks on end, when the wind does not blow.
Hydrogen is extremely expensive to produce, and there is no way to store it in bulk to cover demand in winter for heating etc

can't we plug all the gyms into the grid - seems such a waste of energy all that exercise - instead of using it to work? if you get my drift!

The only problem is electrical energy storage in batteries is VERY expense.

That and when the batteries are old they need to be disposed of... which leads to pollution in other ways.

Easy answer, get rid of money. Ie. Going to the Moon . Money, cost whatever, we have EGO, must do it to beat USSR, to the Moon. We , did it Hurray, hurray hurrrray . That’s it, Spend money , if others are going to get share of the spends, no questions asked. Taxpayers money, your money, supposed to be for running the country. So pay , not needed token of worth for your Efforts. . Same as plastic, but could be more sophisticated. Use by Electronic token , date lifted, use it or lose it. No hoarding No Banks , just earthlings advancing themselves without the slavery of a carrot, money. One world one Global control.

This is the problem with Ted talks, we will watch one person that is very clever and knows what he is talking about as far as the major problems with renewables that are not able to be fixed no matter how advanced we get as a Wind turbine has to have a blade that turns and so kills many endangered species, secondly Solar panels have to have access to the Sun and so any animals in that area not only had to be removed, which also kills many species that don't handle being moved very well, but all the creatures that get killed from the heat produced above the Solar panels.
So called Environmentalists should i would think be also worried about the flora and fauna in these huge areas that they place the Solar Panels in.
We are talking thousands of Hectares of land.
Now we have this gentleman telling us that we should have more solar panels but add huge areas of Battery storage so that Solar can be an actual useful energy source.
We now know from many years of experimenting and seeing how renewables have failed to do anything of worth over seas and yet we still are pushing this useless process.
We have a system that worked very well in Germany, until the moron greenies pushed for change and now Germany pay the price for their stupidity with far higher Electricity costs as well as all the pollution that came from building all those Solar panels and Wind Generators as well as the future benefit of what to do with all those end of life Solar panels.
Just look at France, most of their clean energy is coming from Nuclear and they have very cheap power.
It doesn't take a huge brain to see that the so called Environmentalists did not have the Environment in mind when they all pushed for renewables as none of them had a clue about the reality, it just sounded like a great idea, but no one bothered to do any actual research into the long term possibility or reality of going renewable.
If you look at the actual reality, people are a constant polluter, every time we open our mouths CO2 comes out, if we move, we produce more CO2 and if we work at an actual job, not sit in an Office we produce even more CO2.
If we can't become non polluters how do we expect to make our Energy producing system 100% CO2 free :)
We would all need to stop breathing or place a CO2 catcher and storage facility on our Heads :)
