Last Year's Kale for Early Greens?

  • When kale survives the winter, it comes back and goes to seed in the second year. While that process tends to make the foliage bitter - in early spring when there are still frosts - the greens are very good.

    I had red Russian kale and collard greens overwinter. Lots of good salads and stir frys. They were 4'tall and in my front yard. People walking by were asking me what the pretty yellow flowers were!

    I had kale survive this winter that I planted late last summer and used it in salads with my spinach and arugula I was picking in late winter and early spring. I probably do the same thing this year since I don't really enjoy kale much in the summer. I'd rather eat my swiss chard in summer. Enjoy!

    I grow my kale amongst my flowers, in the spring they make striking spikes yellow flowers

    My russian kale overwintered in a cold frame covered by three feet of snow.(Tantallon) It is now going to seed and not tasting as good but we did get a few good harvests for salads.

    My winter survivors gave me half a kilo of new leaves to freeze, and probably an equal weight of leafy florets to use immediately. It could have been more, but some of my plants were teeming with aphids. I'm greedy with my spring harvest, but not that greedy.

      ...the blanched half kilo hardly fills a freezer bag, but it was originally three oxo-salad-spinner-baskets worth.

    i prefer the flower shots, taste like brocoli,even the yello pods are ok, russian red kale have the swetest i tasted so far,but i belive even if they cal it kale its closer famely to raps, kale dont like the spring sun to mutch they say,migth burn them\wilt a littel. growing portoguese walkingstik cale this year, its a perenual and have ben growing stedy tru winter, also heard alot god about a hardy kale caled shetland kale,

    Im about to do the same thing with a perpetual spinach plant that survived the winter in my cold frame. It’s actually a form of chard.

    Yes. I was harvesting mine over a month ago here in Eastern Ontario. I found the early leaves of my 2nd year kale even more tender than it was last year as first year kale. I didn't even have to massage it in olive oil for salads. I'm letting a lot of it go to seed for collecting to plant next spring. I also have a cabbage flowering now and I plan on collecting its seed. I cut the head off last fall but left the stem and root in the ground. Now I'm wondering if it will cross-pollinate with the kale because they're both of the same family. Their blossoms look the same.

      That's probably not very likely. A variety if kale crossing with another variety of kale is totally possible - but with cabbage - I think you might need a lab for that - or a ridiculous amount of luck.

    I discovered several Kale that survived the winter here in Cape Breton. It was very sweet tasting. Unfortunately it was at my friend's, so I couldn't enjoy much of it.
    If I'm planting Kale out now is it what I'll be harvesting in the fall? Or do I have to plant it later in the season?

    Can that be eaten raw or is it better cooked. At that stage it looks a lot like arugula.

    Nice Kale haul! I had no kale overwinter this year but we had Collards overwinter....they where fantastic eating. We started harvesting those about end of March. Just pulled the plants a few weeks ago to plant my leeks.
    We are full on into summer temps here...hit 33C degrees yesterday. Crazy, pretty early for those temps...peppers, tomatoes, onions, leeks, garlic loving it but not so much my lettuces.
    Anyway...Thank you for the video.

      @maritimegardening4887 yeah...today it is cooler...in the high 20's so was in the garden at 5 this morning so not so hot!!
      Crazy and we are on the shore of Lake Erie. Grandkids have been I the lake swimming for weeks now as the temps are up! Great...but not so great!
