    Julie Andrews. Nothing and no one could ever compare or compete with her voice, her phrasing and her inimitable sense of style and grace in music. She is one of a kind and still is, despite the loss she has suffered. Thank God we have these moments to treasure when we can all harken back to the moment we first heard it....the moment a love came to us or left us...the moment we, once again, fell in love with this fabulously talented woman.

    • @Shamsithaca
      @Shamsithaca 9 років тому +13

      +Kuklapolitan YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Her phrasing is so exquisite. Wtf are music schools doing with teaching crap shit phrasing. Her diction is so much better than 99 percent of all music school grads. PLus she has this voice that no can beat. Even Maria Callas praised her talent. MARIA CALLAS!

    • @arspoetice
      @arspoetice 8 років тому +18

      The purists never gave her the acclaim she was due because of her choice of lighter repertoire, a choice that inevitably took her to film. But no purer or more beautiful instrument existed in the 20th century. In another time, she would have been the finest interpreter of Mozart's soprano catalogue or Puccini -- but every time I hear her sing this sublime Mancini melody, I thank God that her gifts came to this time. As another observer here said "No more haunting melody exists--no more magical artist ever sang it."

    • @Shamsithaca
      @Shamsithaca 8 років тому +15

      +arspoetice Well put!!!!! I think you are indeed right, her voice so pure, so clear that while Maria Callas has virility but did not have Julie's beauty of incredible tone. She often said her voice was white, while I understand where she would think of that, it however by age 35 warmed to something golden and superior. I fear that even she herself did not know how glorious her voice is.

    This song makes me sad. I love hearing the music, Ms. Andrew’s voice, knowing this movie and her performance was 52 years ago and we will never see or hear music like this again. I’m glad you can watch this on UA-cam. I downloaded the song off of apple tunes and listen often.

I will say that for me this song transports me to a world full of emotions, I do not speak English, (I write to you with a translator) ... and it is almost better not to understand the lyrics, so music has its magic ...

    Often I think this sad old world is whistling in the dark.
    Just like a child, who, late from school
    Walks bravely home through the park.
    To keep their spirits soaring
    And keep the night at bay.
    Neither quite knowing which way they are going,
    They sing the shadows away,
    Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good.
    And then I see a brand new face,
    I glimpse some new neighborhood.
    So walk me back home, my darling,
    Tell me dreams really come true.
    Whistling, whistling,
    Here in the dark with you.
    So walk me back home, my darling,
    Tell me dreams really come true.
    Whistling, whistling,
    Here in the dark with you.

      @@harpphila7548 If you're talking about the fourth line, it's "a child" - so "their" is reasonable. (Some grammar pedants would say it should be "his or her", but in this case, tough.)

      They filmed this opening on a soundstage rather than the actual stage used throughout the film because the stage floor was too bumpy to achieve the smooth camera transition they wanted.

  • @rixx46
    @rixx46 5 років тому +40

    Such a beautiful song. Did anyone else notice that the entire song is performed in a single continuous take? No easy feat in 1970 when cameras were much bigger and must have been on a crane to sweep around as it does - all with tricky lighting. If she missed her mark by an inch or two she would go out of focus. Even with her vocal pre-recorded, this must have been quite a task. Her husband/director, Blake Edwards did this again in their wonderful, 'Crazy World' ballad in 'Victor/Victoria,' also done in a single take and also a stage performance within the film. So much talent.

    Ah, yes - Henry Mancini - What beautiful music he wrote. It seems I'm not alone as I read some of the comments. This songs seems to stir memories of loves whom we have lost - as it reminds me of my wonderful husband who passed two years ago. It never seems to amaze me how we are drawn to these poignant songs, though they evoke moments that we once shared and never will again - until we join them. Julie's rendition of this song is nothing less than perfection.

Anyway, I'm glad you've found her - you have much to enjoy on UA-cam and her films (and TV shows): as well as one of the top singers of all time (mine are Julie, Judith, Nana, and Mireille - in no particular order; they're all very different), she's an excellent actress, and dancer, and generally Lady. (Though also can be very sexy too! Probably at best in this and Tamarind.)

    This is one of my all-time favorite songs. And it is also the first time I hear this gorgeous original Julie Andrews version. For years now (17 or 18) my main source for this song was the moving version of Dick Haymes. A performance from a live recording done in the seventies (' 76?). But Julie is for sure another winner. This is the best stuff I heard her do besides her singing on the original broadcast recording of My Fair Lady.

    One of Dame Andrews favorite movies and title songs. It did save Paramount Pictures upon release. I saw it the day it premiered at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans and I still have the movie Program. Her last film to enjoy a Roadshow run. It had one intermission. Gone are those days. Film is a must DVD for Julie Andrews fans.

    One of my favorite song. And I love another song "The girl in no mans land " too. I collected Original sound track records (two, one is for listening another one is for saving as my treasure) and compact disk from Darling Lily. Thank you for uploading.

      Lili, not Lily (-:
      (I agree, two beautiful songs. More by the same composer in Victor, Victoria.)

      @@G6JPG Thank you, G6JPG. I did not aware of that. "Darling Lili" was correct. Beautiful and romantic musics are forever!

      @@aaabbb-lt9is Yes, I agree. This is a particularly beatiful piece - including the video.
      (Yes, "Lili" is the normal German spelling, though I don't think it's currently a common name. There's of course the other famous Lili [whose surname was spelt Marleen, not as Ms. Dietrich anglicised her forename].)

    La musique envoûtante de Henry Mancini, la voix magique de Julie Andrews. et tout simplement l'un des plus beaux plans séquences de l'histoire du cinéma signé Blake Edwards. Excusez du peu...

    LYRICS
    Often I think this sad old world is whistling in the dark.
    Just like a child, who, late from school walks bravely home through the park.
    To keep their spirits soaring and keep the night at bay.
    Neither quite knowing which way they are going, they sing
    the shadows away
    Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good.
    And then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new neighborhood.
    So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
    Whistling whistling here in the dark with you.
    So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
    Whistling whistling here in the dark with you.
