  • Another whisky Fireside Chat from The Happy Camper - this time from best selling author Adam Shoalts (Alone Against the North, A History of Canada in Ten Maps, Beyond The Trees). Adam has been labelled "one of Canada's greatest living explorers" and "Canada's Indiana Jones."
His career has included mapping rivers, leading expeditions sponsored by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Mountain Equipment Co-op, numerous archaeological digs, photographing elusive and rare wildlife, and completing a nearly 4,000 km solo journey across Canada’s Arctic. His greatest love, however, is simply spending time in the outdoors.
Shoalts is a regular guest on television and radio, and his work has been featured in media around the world, including the BBC, CNN, CTV, CBC, and The Guardian. In 2016, Shoalts was named a national champion of the Trans-Canada Trail and in 2018 Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society; although he’s not resident and keeps wandering the woods.

I think people who *don't* get out to nature for some adventure are crazy! Folks think I'm crazy because I'm female and go backpacking solo and I call it fun 😁
Canada was built by adventurers! I think it's great that there are still people who want to do that, and share their adventures with us in books, or movies or UA-cam.

People who haven’t spent time in the woods wouldn’t understand your situation.
    I liked your 1st book.
    Paddle on Adam!
    Thanks for the interview Kevin.

Men of the Last Frontier and Ontario's Lost Canoe Routes are two of the books that got me hooked on canoeing and tripping when I was a teenager too. Gonna have to pick up one of Adam's books asap! Stellar interview, thanks Kevin!

Wow! When he said that his first outdoor adventure was when his Uncle dropped him off in the bush, it brought back memories of when my Dad did the same for me at 13. Being still a young guy, he makes many of us jealous of his fantastic life up to now.

Great interview Kevin and Adam. I find it's amazing how our lives grow from the seeds that are planted so early. It's a beautiful thing when it all flows just like a river! You can see it on Adam's face when talking about being crazy or not. Well done!

What a cool interview. I started his book Beyond the Trees after hearing the interview. I think the comparisons to Indiana Jones is wrong, he is more of a Frodo Baggins to me. If he ever decided to write a fantasy epic I would read it in a heart beat.
