- James Yucel, Director of the Defund the BBC Campaign speaks to talkRADIO’s Dan Wootton about his newly launched campaign. He told Dan the campaign was started out of frustration and “completely on a whim”, saying the sole aim of the campaign is to “ultimately scrap the BBC licence fee”.
He told Dan “I've got many kinds of messages from strangers, telling me to keep up the good work” but he added that he had received a number of nasty messages as well, however “most of which were actually ridiculously amusing.”
Another of his concerns about the occasions where the BBC has reportedly introduced “doctors, teachers and nurses” whilst failing to declare affiliations to groups such as Momentum.
With nearly 50,000 supporters signed up already, the young campaigner who is a university student in Glasgow has already made waves in the media landscape.

This too was the final straw for me. I cancelled my license the following day. Took a bit of effort as could not navigate the site online so rang direct and it took about five minutes. I urge others to do the same if disatisied with the BBC of today.
Got shot a few years ago, saved a few pounds onto the bargain and use other sources now. Best thing is I can compare, can't do that one with the one eyed equivalent of Pravda.

Yes, disband it, but lets then make sure that the best of it is restored and funded. I have suggested that we should be able to fund the production areas of the BBC that we want more of; in my case drama, Horizon, Attenborough. I don't want to have to watch them on channels with advertising. Lets also insist that all BBC material since it's creation belongs to the public (who paid for it), and should remain on free access in something like Britbox.
I agree! He toes the line and needs educating (he is after all not a scientist) but he has a passion that viewers like. Yes, he has failed to look into climate change properly - I quite liked David Bellamy who, after he became a 'climate change denier' said that the BBC had refused to let him make programmes any more. He created a big website full of good material on the climate, but sadly he died last year. I have doubts about climate change being man made, and am shocked by the cover ups (cllimategate, the emails UEA) and the deletion of the tree ring data because it fails to show rising temperatures since 1900 (which invalidates it as a temperature proxy destroying the current agenda). Yes, I've seen most of the videos on YT, but sadly YT is now censoring heavily - half of my bookmarked videos have now gone - replaced with a message that they have been taken down, even though they may not have contravened YT rules ! The world is changing almost too quickly and I hope we don't make the mistake of the French revolution and reap a 'terror'.
I defunded them many years ago by not paying their licence.
This is why they wanted to make it mandatory. We must be one of the only nations that pays for the privilege of consuming their own propaganda!
@@Ryotbh Nope, Norway recently made the broadcasting fee a part of our regular taxes since everyone was scrapping their TV's and going online for content. Sweden also has this insane propaganda fee.

@@edwardcatt2399 HI, No, not in my case. Cancelled mine many months ago, have had no correspondence from them at all. I think the trick is, to honestly tell them you intend to stop paying and tell them why (there's an online form), then cancel your direct debit etc, so they are fully aware of your intentions and actions. I think it might be a different story if you simply stop paying without alerting them. Personally, I welcomed the opportunity to tell them exactly why I was cancelling my license and what I thought of them.
@@ranxerox13 we in Canada have the CBC which is very like your BBC and I think they even swap stories and stupid crap they put out....ours is paid out of our general taxes....but if u in the UK stop paying the fee do you then stop receiving the actual tv channel? or can u tune in regardless?

I've just cancelled and deleted I player & ITV hub - I honestly feel liberated it's a great feeling. I recommend everyone does it. I'm going to give the money I save to charity. Not to pay Kuenssberg, Peston, Maitlis, Lineker etc's wages they are the enemy of the British ELECTED goverment. YOU SHOULD DO IT !
I "defunded" the awful BBC year's ago and I still get over a dozen letter's a year from tv licensing (CRAPita) demanding money with all sort's of threats. They go straight in the shredder !
You should keep those letters for posterior.
Contact them and threaten legal action as they sending those letters are harassment, especially in those numbers
Me too. Was going to hashtag that, didn't want to trigger the snwoflakes. I get my threatening letter every month. Started keeping them for the last 3 years. Got over 30 now. Obviously. They were sued for doing it a few years ago, stopped for about a week then started doing it again. Saving all my letters for when we finally get enough people together to sue them again.

Well we couldn't get them defunded for covering up the rape of children by their own stars so my hopes for this aren't too high, unfortunately.

I cancelled my license six months ago. It's up to us to make sure it is closed down; I don't trust the government to ever get around to doing it.

I decided to give up on broadcast TV several years ago. I told the BBC licensing people I didn't have a TV anymore (true) and so wouldn't be paying for a licence. They phoned me and I told them I watch UA-cam etc. I think I had to fill in a declaration or something - not a big deal. That was it. A couple of years later they asked me again - same deal. You can stop funding the BBC legally if you don't watch broadcast TV. Be polite and friendly with the people who are only doing their jobs.

Having observed the events on Saturday, viewing as many different videos of the disturbance on Saturday, I came to the conclusion, that it was the police who instigated the situation. However, I absolutely agree that the language used in reporting is a joke, and, as you note, a world apart from that which would've been used, as you say, at a football match, or as I'd say, at a protest against the lockdown or a March for Brexit.

My brother is a policeman in the met. He sent me two pictures...
First one was of the protest that the BBC put on their website.
The second was the actual photo in which the top half (that had been cut off) showed a black man in a mask holding what looked like a sword threatening the police, which was probably a long wooden stick but still. Didn't look good.

I stopped paying the BBC around 5 years ago, when I only watched stuff online after it broadcast on TV, by the time the law change to include the BBC iplayer in the TV licence, in my opinion there was nothing worth watching on it, with shows that I did watch either ending or went downhill so I stopped watching them anyway.
I watch everything online (mostly UA-cam), and I don’t miss live TV.
I think to fully get rid of the TV licence we will need to wait until after the next election (if a party that is for scrapping the fee wins), with the BBC charter ending in 2027.

It's been 3 year since I've had an aerial plugged into my tv. 3 years since I've paid the fee, and 3 years of no one coming to my door. Don't watch LIVE tv as it being broadcast to a terrestrial channel, or iplayer and you're good to go.
Google 'no tv licence needed', follow the links to the licensing site and fill in the form with the bare minimum. You'll have an email or post every 2 years to just redo it.
