  • It is really starting to sink in how the colors of the Southern Pacific are really starting to fade out of the railroading landscape. Tunnel Motors, Scarlet and Gray unpatched units, and searchlights were all still pretty common up until the mid-2000s, and from the late 2000s to mid 2010s, one could always count on seeing at least one patched unit on an outing, and there were still some unpatched units around too.
Now in 2024, it’s been withered down to just a handful of patched units left in SP paint, which made UP 6379 leading today’s MRVWC across the classic SP bridge over H Street in Sacramento all the more poignant.

Not too far from CSUS -- my old apartment looked out on the tracks near there!
Always walked under that overpass to use the WiFi at Tupelo Coffee (on Elvas) or have breakfast at Nopalitos. So glad to see the art deco drumhead still there - and see some _Speed Lettering_ !

SP 333 was its number. There are still a few old SP autoracks running around but they, too, are far and in between.

You see all that graffiti? It seems graffiti is glorified and encouraged as a matter of freedom of speech.
There is one rail fan site that censored me when I complained . I was told "we only document it to appreciate it's art value" yet reviewers typically bagged about doing it . I was condemned for being political . My father owned a building that was tagged, and was given 48 hours to remove it, or face a fine and repainting by the city and required to pay the cost .
