So today, I had to sit through 74 slides on safety and all this from the same guy who fell of the ladder while hanging the 100 days without an accident banner. Seriously, do you really think rules by themselves or for that matter buttons and banners change anything?
Don't you think the crew on the Hindenburg knew that hey giant exploding dirigible overhead, maybe open flames, not so good? Or, that nobody figured out that having more people than lifeboats on the Titanic might, I don't know, decrease your chances of floating?
And here's the real stinker. I guarantee there was somebody there next to the guy lighting a stogie on the Hindenburg. Or, a whole crew who had figured out that the ratio of lifeboats to people wasn't adding up. So if you want to be safe, it takes more than just rules. You need to open your mouth and say something, before things start going down the drain.
So, here's a memo to you safety specialists out there. You want to cut down on all those accidents? How about teaching people how to actually speak up when they see a problem. You know, hold each other accountable. Not only will things get better, but hey, think of all the money you'll save on buttons and banners.
