Luckily the only dulcimer I knew of was Warren May’s because I had visited his shop in Berea , and was enchanted by the sound of him playing it. 10 years later I took a lesson, and borrowed a dulcimer. Once I decided to buy one, since there are no dulcimer shops anywhere near me I just called up Warren and ordered one. It’s not just sweet sounding but easier to play.

I have 2 Warren May dulcimers. One I purchased directly from Warren at his shop in Berea. He is such a wonderful person. The other is a tulip poplar just like the one you're playing, with the wood peg tuners. I got it second hand. I really love them both! And yes, they have a sweet sound!

Wow cool video!! I have a Warren May from 82 I believe it's the hour drop I think he calls it( half tear drop half hourglass) it's old with no 61/2 and the wooden pegs!! The guy I got it from said it was hanging in his grandma's house for 10 or 15 yrs!!😮 I cleaned it up and put new strings on it plays great it's all cherry!! When it gets cold you can hear the wooden pegs detuning hanging on my wall I'm pretty sure it still had the strings Warren put on it!! Thanks for sharing

Hi Steven, thanks for this video. I've been learning the Dulcimer for almost 3 years. I love music, especially the harmonies, this is the sound that drew me in. Never played an instrument before. Thanks

I love videos that demostrate different instruments...especially vintage guitars. Love the video. Those chords are just beautiful....I sure can hear the difference!

Warren's been making these a long time. I met him at the Berea Crafts Fair back in 1990 and bought that same Poplar model with the Rosewood tuners. He did put in the 6.5 fret at my insistence, but he did try to talk me out of it. He was right, of course; I rarely have use of the extra fret, and its existence confuses more than helps. He did do a video a few years ago explaining the differences in the fret spacing.

I LOVE my all walnut Warren May!
It was my very first dulcimer that we purchased about 8 years ago...and what a sweet introduction to this wonderful instrument. I have several others now by various luthiers, but I still go back and play my May with regularity. It's like visiting with an old friend every time I reach for it.
GET ONE before Warren retires! You won't regret it. 🥰

I have (and still play daily) a very similar poplar Warren May dulcimer that was my grandmother's that was made in 1990. I love the sound of them.

The Warren May sounds best to my ear. It has a warm woody sound.

Hey Stephen… I have a Warren May Dulcimer that I purchased from a woman in Virginia probably 15 years ago. She had a 6 1/2 fret put in and it has never sounded right. Would it be smart of me to remove that? that is to have it removed by someone who knows what they’re doing? Let me know.
