- A MacBook Air that reportedly had some liquid damage. The actual corrosion was quite devious at staying out of sight, but ended up being exactly where I expected in the end.
A poor connection with the trackpad will stop the pad from working, and often interfere with the trackpad thermal sensor, which in turn causes high fan speed and limp mode.
Bonus stripped screw head because I had a moment of carelessness.

You just saved me money. Just fixed my Macbook air by just cleaning the cable. Thank you!!!
Adamant IT, thank you so much!! Exact computer (well mid-2013); Exact symptoms; Found trackpad end of trackpad cable with corrosion probably a little brew spill down into the trackpad crevice at the exact wrong spot. But it took awhile for the problem to manifest, so seemingly out of the blue the keyboard and pad crapped out. External USB mouse and kb would work fine, but kernel-task @ 298% cpu = useless box. Best clean I could do was with denatured alcohol and toothbrush and pointy plastic tool. No joy after several cleanings. So I reversed the cable thinking half clean and half dirty at both ends would have a better chance at working. Success!! Ordered a new cable just in case.
Thank you for walk-throughs. I'm trying to get into board repairs, more as a hobby. But out of all of the tutorials on youtube, i've learned more through your videos than anyone's.

Thank You SOOOOO much for this video, I just picked up a 2017 Macbook Air for a song with a bad trackpad, and after watching this I discovered it has the EXACT same localised water damage! Amazing.
Vinegar can clean oxidized contacts very well.
The cobwebs are probably there from a faulty web browser!
Thanks a lot for this solution. I have exact same problem, but also laptop won't power on from battery, but your solution solved my problem! I even can't imagine, that corrosion on cable can lead to behavior like this. Thanks once again
Thanks for the video. I had a similar problem and this helped! 👍👌
If the flat flex likely shot anyway you can try trimming a 1mm off the end and hope it will have good copper to make a connection. Or a last resort you can even try retinning it. Following that, coating the contacts in a light film of dielectric or vaseline will prevent further corrosion. Even on a new HD, I pull the PCB and coat those contacts as well to prevent carbon tracking.
your chair is driving me nuts :D
I too have stripped and snapped many apple's screws. I learned that you have to use excessive force on track pad screws, and brouhahas touch on stand ones.
Hah, I got on that had a glass of orange juice on it. Put it in the cleaner, but no real damage to the board. I noticed the sensor under the flatcable between the logic board and the power board had tripped. Did some measuring and found that the cable connector was sugar-coated. Darn sugar gets in everything. Got it all fixed up now, nice and clean, new cable and she is purring. Customer ecstatic calling me a wizard, glad I got it saved.

congrat BOSS
Thank you for lesson
Hi, what if I cannot find any liquid damage but the Macbook air is in limp mode with system using 89.95% CPU constantly? How should I troubleshoot? Thanks!
for removing a strip screw we can also put some flux and solder a peice of metal or screw driver if you dont have a drill machine
thanks adaman
Wished you kept the cleaning bits in without being sped up, love watching these videos specifically for things like that.
Hi,
Recently left a question on LFC #130, would be awesome if you can help me out!
I have the same problem, but where is the temperature sensor, and what is the relation between the temperature sensor and trackpad cable? It should check CPU temperature.
I write it before, but I struggled with myself and opened the MacBook and check the cable, so I find it broken. I cut the cable 1 mm and removed the plastic cover. Now everything is ok. thank you for this big help. You gave new life to this laptop.💌
Hello AdmantIT, I just built a pc, it’s an AMD ryzen 5 2600 paired with an RX 580. But it has no post and doesn’t send any signals too the monitor. I would be very grateful if you could help me fix it.
-Thanks
thank sr
Hi my MacBook Air 2012 mid it’s getting freez mean very slow
after formatting the is Mac OS also .
I didn’t used f0r 1 1/4 year
And battery also gone
Actually what is the problem insight
Even if you use the correct screw driver you can still strip the trackpad screws. Those damn things are easy to strip if you’re not super careful.
If i was a customer, I would be leery of getting parts from Ebay. You take a chance on Ebay that they cheap part will work. A guarantee that if it does not work you will get a free replacement with free expedited shipping? For a pc part, it is better to pay a little more and get a part that has some sort of promise of reliability. The cheap Ebay part could very well be made at the same place as the name branded one. You take your chances.
Hi please where do u live I want to bring my laptop for a repair
It looks like it was just a drop of some liquid that hit the right spot.
@8:46 weird flex bro XD
bro. just clean flex contacts with RUBBER ERASER (carbon pencil eraser) and Majic....
AAAAAAND Apple would have asked for over 500€ for the repair with user data wipe.
@Adamant IT
Great tutorial and wisdom!
Please read this through and respond! I’m desperate for answers! Thanks. (And I tried to be as specific as I can)
My MacBook Problem Summary & Background Info: Hey, my MacBook Air A1466 (2017) is having problems; the fan is always on full blast, and is very slow/laggy, when on(Limp Mode). And I accidentally dripped some water near the top of the trackpad when I first damaged it. I opened it up and inspected the ribbons, I found the sensor ribbon and the ends were damaged. There was some sort of scummy and burnt-like residue on the ribbon and the pins from the connector. One factor you should take into account is the touch/move on the trackpad was still fully functional, and the only exception was the fan is always on full blast and slow processing on the cpu. I am 100% sure it is not a motherboard/logic board problem, as the Mac is 100% functional.
Testing: So then I did some testing with the Mac(cuz I don’t have replacement trackpad, and I’ve already tried cleaning), I wanted to see if I disconnected the ribbon (trackpad), maybe the fan would stop going full blast and the Mac would get faster(good as new speed). But when I restarted the Mac and disconnected the ribbon immediately after, the touch/move stop working and the fan was still on full blast, while the laptop was very slow. Also the keyboard wasn’t working either.
FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS:
If I disconnected the ribbon for the track pad, will the MacBook performance be revived?
Or does the MacBook require a fully functional and good condition trackpad to revive its performance? Because what you did in the video was replacing the trackpad, which apparently fixed the “Limp Mode” problem including the fan speed problem.
I subbed & liked.👍🏻
Yes, there's a temp sensor in the trackpad. If it's damaged _or not connected_ you'll get high fan speed and limp mode.
So yes, I would advise replacing the trackpad, and possibly the ribbon for good measure.
@@Adamant_IT thanks!!!!! will do!
Late to the party but its a dead give away that was the only connector to have water damage it has h20 in its name
Sort that squeaky seat out, all I could hear throughout that was the seat 😂
good English...
boss you are good. but you are talking too much.... just kidding
