  • In today's episode of our daily sheep farming vlog at Ewetopia Farms, we provide an update on the different bottle baby groups and their progress on the bottle feeders. As loyal followers of our channel, you are aware that bottle lambs initially struggle to drink from a bottle without being held, requiring training to adapt to a bottle holder. It is natural for them to seek nurturing, so this training process may take a few attempts before they grasp the concept.
    Additionally, we prepare the next pen in the second Coverall for the upcoming group of Dorset lambs. While cleaning out the pen, we take the opportunity to discuss the flooring used in our Coverall and shed light on our barn and feeder designs. With the pen empty and the manure removed, it becomes easier to showcase these aspects.
    Lastly, we take the next Dorset group on a short walk across the barnyard, introducing them to their new pen. Join us in this informative and engaging episode as we delve into the intricacies of sheep farming.

    Sheep do like to follow the leader. As Lynn said, all it takes is one to go and the rest follow. When my father and grandfather raised sheep, they had one ewe that wore a bell and was always the leader. It worked well when moving the sheep.

    Maisie is thriving and looking wonderful. She's so lucky to have the pair of you! "M" lamb names, and I'm still waiting for you to name one of those big fellows "Major." LOL

    It’s so neat that the new Dorset group in coverall are welcomed by sunbeams. ☀️The little lambs will really enjoy their first experience after starting their little lives in the darker barn. Soo much more light.

    Good evening Arnie and Lynn. Awww. Chewy’s lamb is so darn cute. She must be a permanent member of the Ewetopian flock. Love how the lambs come when you call. They didn’t do too bad. Better than holding them all. The lamb on the bale is a happy little guy. Maisie is a smart little girl and of course you have to love Little Mister. Magnum is a great name. Love it. Look how good those lambs are growing. That little girl with the fluffy is adorable. That coverall is like having a football field. I think your feeders are very clever. Thanks so much for the explanation about the feeder. It made so much sense. I had no idea it would pick up a barn smell. The consideration the two of you give your animals is so very apparent. Great work. Boy moving the Dorsets was ring around the Rosie. They looked at that water like it was Lake Ontario 😂😂

    Mooney and Chewy's lamb are going to love the new space!! Chewy's lamb needs a food name like Macadamia, Mozzarella or Muffin which matches her sister Kupkake.😂 I enjoyed Arnie's discussion of the barn build. The feeder design is the perfect set up that I'm sure has been used as a model for others lots of times. You guys should patent the design! As always thanks for sharing your time with us and stay safe!! Enjoy your Sunday!!🙏❤

    I calculate that you’d need 11 yards of gravel for a half-inch floor. At $250/yard for the gravel + $16/yard to spread it, that comes to about $3k. Yes, considerably less than the $25k-$30k Arnie estimates for a concrete floor!
    Arnie acknowledges that the gravel floor gets damaged and needs to be replaced, but left out what Lynn says about gravel offering drainage that keeps the floor dry compared to concrete.

    When you were building the cost was very important to stay on budget. Now you have been in business you may do things different, you may afford cement floors. You may keep your feeder and perfect them because you have years of experience. However, the lambs may still get their jumping boxes. Love your channel.

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  4 місяці тому +3

      We would never switch to concrete as the gravel/sand is much cleaner for the sheep because it allows for drainage and therefore less ammonia buildup. We would adjust spacing on feeders.

    Another fantastic vid with an abundance of info! Chewy’s black spotted lamb is absolutely adorable! I know this is an M year, but Sprinkles would be a great name for her…as if she got into a jar of black molasses, lol! Or Motley, for an M name. She certainly has a motley of colour and genes in her! 😄

    They newest bottle lambs sure are doing well on the bottle holder.
    Oooooo Magnum! I like that name. Looks like a Glad son?
    Was that Chewy’s lamb that has the black on the back of her hocks? She seems to have quite symmetrical markings. Too cute

    I was thinking about Chewy's spotted daughter, trying to think of good names.... I thought Crunchy, then said "no M" so then went to Munchy or Munchkin, and thought that would be good for a chewy daughter would be a munchy or munchkin. Then I thought that one of your largest (bone size) rams could be called MOOSE

      The got rid of a lot of their crosses in 2023 to shrink the flock to mostly purebreds. Downsizing a bit and then cut out one breeding session. So between the two reductions lessening the workload so they can postpone retiring. And this fall they actually were able to get in a real vacation.

    Do you have to feed grain to sheep and goats are can you feed high quality grass hay and silage. I don't like the idea of having to pull big lambs or kids.

    Why don’t you use the dog to help move the sheep from one barn to another?

    • @alisoncummins2726
      @alisoncummins2726 4 місяці тому +4

      Not with young lambs. Dogs aren’t allowed in the lambing barn so those young lambs have never seen a dog up close. It might even freak out the ewes to see a dog running up to their babies.
      The dogs and lambs get to know eachother in the coveralls.
