Yes, Roberta Flack's original early seventies version is timeless, like you said. That's why the Fugees covered it in a hiphop-ish style in the nineties.

I am also sure you have heard the Jamaican beauty Millie Small signing "My Boy Lollipop". There is also a nice live version from a London nightclub (1973) on you tube you would like.
SO, you are thinking of The Fugees's (with Lauryn Hill) (speeded-up hip-hop) version of this, which is the original by Roberta Flack. I love all of Lauren Hill's music, EXCEPT for their remake of this song. It loses all the emotion in the Fugee's version. Just my opinion, of course.
