My take is you shouldn't contribute to open-source cause "you want to contribute to open-source". You should contribute cause you're are using a open-source program/project, you found a bug/problem or you think you have an awesome feature idea. You have the skills to fix it then fork it , fix it, use it, test it. Only then reach out to the maintainers tell them what you have found then make a PR
thats the right way.

In the video it shows only 121 closed spam PRs, I checked it's 1.3k now! I can only imagine how frustrated the express maintainers are feeling
I don't know anything about coding, but that video of Apna College was created in August 2023 and it seems the total number of closed "Update Readme" PRs that apparently originated from her video are merely 30-odd to date. So out of 1.7 million viewers, only 30-odd made this mistake and some of them even closed those PRs by themselves. But to my surprise, she was so badly targeted and humiliated for this minor disruption. I guess many Indian developers knowingly misrepresented this situation and the usual 'Indophiles' jumped on the bandwagon.

That's why I haven't contributed in open source yet inspite of having knowledge that how to contribute. Unless I'm having enough time make some worthy contribution I decided not to contribute.

The content creators which make such tutorials must first make sure that they are using their own resources for such videos and also disclaimer should be given even before the video starts, most of the students who are new doesn't know how to take such videos in a professional way as they get overwhelmed which leads to such things!
First see the video of Apna College, don't follow the hype. While she was updating the Readme she strongly said "DON'T DO THIS TYPE OF PR, THIS IS A BAD PR EXAMPLE". But those who are freshers they don't use their brain, just copy-paste what tutors type. If students blindly(without using their brain.exe) copy-paste things, then all tutors should shut their channels and courses

@@Auror2k05 but i do enjoy,and i am learning basics of coding like Html and css in mobile(From Mimo) and after my 12th boards this year i am going to learn coding more deeply using laptop cuz Coding really fascinated me when my friend told me about coding in class 11th and i am learning JS for fun only but my main focus is to learn HTML and CSS thoroughly and learn it as much as i can

This mistake has already been done by CodeWithHarry 2-3 years back.
Literally,that video was taken down for this reason.
But still, influencers like Shradhha🤡 have to commit the mistake again.
Not only that , the immature mass audience will effectively contribute in making India a red flag in terms of bad reputation.
I just was a part of a Twitter space hosted by Hitesh Choudhary Sir , where Piyush was also there.
A lot of professional and senior developers were there who discussed how people without knowing the true essence of OS are doing unnecessary PR's only because of the unnecessary trend of getting jobs via Open Source.
Literally, I am so blessed I was part of the space with so many professional developers out there who shared their immense knowledge out there.
Rather than being part of the masses , people who are actually serious should start learning from senior developers .
Stop following the overrated influencers.
They are overrated because of the mass immature audience only .

The mistake was from both sides.

The problem is this may create a stereotype, Indian names/usernames are easily recognisable, anyone looking at a PR opened by an Indian will think at first glance - "Damn, another spam".

This happens because we r not following experienced developers like histesh sir , You , Traversy media and others we are following those who are creating drama about free free freee freee freeeee education.

Just a genuine question what is open source?? And why should we not contribute to open source unnecessarily?? Does it cause serious problems? I'm new to programming so I don't know much about it
Open source is when the code is made available for anyone to see online. Using websites like Github, Gitlab and Bitbucket, people can host their projects online and anyone can see the code. This also means anyone can contribute to make the code better or fix a bug or add a new feature.
Having a github account with such contributions to open source projects allegedly looks impressive on your resume. So the blind Indian students started adding their names in some text files in some open source projects.
This is not a useful contribution as it doesn't help the project in any way. Thanks to our population, the people maintaining these projects have to go through thousands on useless contribution and reject them as spam, wasting their time.
That's why we should inform all the dumb students to stop making spam contributions.

Open-source software means software( project ) which code anyone can view, modify and distribute as per the licence of the the software. As such people can collaborate and contribute to the project making development faster. Many people use these software in personal and professional life as such the code must follow strict rules and keep it up to standards.

Pehle basics seekhne hote hai, fir coding fundamentals seekhne hote hai, fir personal projects banane hote hai. Open source mein contribute karne ke liye pehle codebase samajh ana chahiye. Gawaro ke jaise bas kahi bhi apna naam likhe ke contribution nahi hota. Github pe pull request banana ke liye do button dabane hote hai, actual mehnat coding mein hoti hai. Ek bar professional world mein kaam karke dekho, tab samajh ayega.
