  • Almost every item you own -- from your toothbrush to your bedframe, to the makings of that daily cup of coffee - gets to you by truck. For needed goods, it is estimated that 80% of Washington communities rely on trucks alone, according to the Washington Trucking Association.
Industry leaders told KING 5 there are not enough new truck drivers. In a matter of years, the shortage could have crisis-level consequences for all of us unless we find a way to pack the pipeline.
Othello School District is working to do just that.

This is amazing, I got my CDL as soon as I turned 21 even though I don’t drive now I never regret getting it. it will always be something to fall back if times are hard.
Be safe out there, young truckers of the future!!

There’s no shortage of drivers. There’s a shortage of pay and and abundance of regulations.

    There is no driver shortage.
Freight is down, diesel is up and insurance is high. Companies are going under by thousands and owners operators are bankrupt. All have licenses but no work to haul.

I tried it for a few months after I got out of the military. Hardest thing for me was going stir crazy in the cab.

There are plenty of drivers but they don't want to work for the wages offered which have been driven down by the mega carriers and drivers that cannot speak or read English.

This is Amazing I hope other schools in Washington state follow the example of this cool. Also why stop here and not include other trades available like HVAC, Plumbing, Framing and other valuable trades.

I think this is excellent. High school should be preparing students for the beginning stages of their adulthood. Schools should recognize that the pipeline to a university is not desired or realistic for a great number of students. So encouraging a pathway into necessary, well-paying trades is great! They should also have courses for plumbing, electrical, welding, etc. These are NECESSARY, skilled jobs that you can earn a living doing and there will always be a need for them.

I got my CDL at 21 and drove untill I was about 32 when I became an RN. I paid $2,000 for a 14-hour course in 2008 and I was on my way. In general, trucking does not compensate well for the time spent. Local hourly jobs generally involve hard city driving and/or another compment such as an addtional skill or labor. I did land a Teamster job which paid very well but it was in a high cost of living area. Zero regrets on moving on. I would have to drive for 60 hours to make what I now make in 2 12-hour shifts. Road drivers are not compensated for the hours and days sitting in a truck cab in some parking lot: if i'm at work, I need to be getting paid, don't care what the other dude is accepting

If there’s a trucker shortage how come they aren’t making much?

The other replies on here are spot-on. Not only is there no driver shortage, there CAN NEVER BE a long-term, nation-wide, perpetual driver shortage in the US, as we saw with Covid. Demand for freight goes up, rates go up, capacity expands very quickly. What’s happening in trucking the past 2 years is it’s taking too long for all that excess capacity to exit the market. We have TOO MANY truckers. So why the push from the ATA for 18 year olds to get their CDLs? The ATA is a lobbyist group made up of trucking companies, they do not not have they ever represented drivers. They’re pushing for 18 year olds to drive CMVs because they’ll work for less than an older driver with years of experience. The US currently has twice as many drivers with CDLs as there are Class-8 trucks to put them in. 10 million CDLs for 4 million Class-8 trucks. Any company complaining about a driver shortage simply isn’t paying enough, that’s all.

As a 33 year old truck driver who has been doing it since 21… so 12 years experience 0 tickets 0 accidents. And there is no driver shortage. I am fortunate to work for an amazing company making 100K+ but let me tell you it’s Joe Bidens America. Labor pay is low rates suck fuel and insurance is high.

There's no driver shortage. Only a shortage of fair wages and respect from employers, shipper/receivers, brokers And the driving public!! Personally I don't agree with the young (21 under) getting CDLs. What's the saying young and dumb and we're putting them behind a 80,000 rocket. It should be getting class B first and drive for at least 1yr before upgrade to class A.

The truck driver shortage is a myth. There's plenty of evidence that there are likely more than twice as many people with CDLs as there are slots that need to be filled. This is a pay problem due to the way modern trucking pay structures work, putting most drivers into the independent Business operator category, and then not actually paying enough to cover expenses.
There is only a trucker shortage in the sense that there are a lot of truckers who refuse to work for the kinds of wages and conditions that are being thrust upon them by greedy corporations.

I’ve always wanted to be a trucker since I was little, now that I’m older I know there’s so much at stake being a trucker, if you get into a crash you’re going to be the one responsible and it seems automation will likely increase in the industry

Driving is no longer a middle to upper middle class living anymore. It is an over regulated, underpaid, and under appreciated blue collar trade. That is why there is a shortage of drivers.

Removing cannabis limitations from CDL requirements will provide more truckers than needed to fill the shortage. It's 2024, for cris'sake.
