  • • What do Artists do all...
    First broadcast: 13 Nov 2013.
Episode 7/12 A past winner of the Jerwood Painting Prize, Shani Rhys James is one of Wales's leading artists. She lives and works in a renovated 17th-century house and barn in Llangadfan, mid-Wales and her studio space is filled with striking paintings which combine domestic scenes with intense self-portraits often depicting powerful childhood memories.
'I paint because it is my way to express something. I'm trying to capture my own personal mythology in paint, so I paint what I feel and what effects me'.
This intimate film follows Shani as she prepares for her exhibition in Aberystwyth in November and captures her deep in concentration working on a new large oil painting.

Shani's artwork is truly haunting. Her sense of color and the way she manipulates the paints evoke deep feelings of sadness and wonder. I am a fan of her inner landscape, it's an unsettling but beautiful place. Thank you for the upload!

there's something unsettling about watching an artist in the midst of creating art....they're incredibly exposed and vulnerable

I feel the same too, like it's a private, meditative moment (however long it lasts) and one should not be disturbed lest the creative process be interrupted.

Tell that to people who hover over your shoulder while drawing or sculpting or painting! Sheesh! I need a jar full of salt next to me at all times!

It’s probably because it’s something we don’t always see, we only see the finished product and we have all these romantic ideas about artists, that unfortunately aren’t always true, we idealise that a person who paints so wonderfully is a wonderful person, which they are and most artists don’t realise they are cause they indulge in their art, I don’t mean that as a good or bad thing, but artists are people, but we see them as Gods because they think of things that we sometimes can’t grasp the concept of and imagine they must have gone to space and back in order to obtain that idea.

Fantastic to see the humble basic life of an artist again I have lived with two and both lived quite frugal and yes I remember the old cafeteria and white jug of Robs and Olga's cat always there was paint on the cat your clothes at least here they had a bed instead of a mattress on the boards as in Tres Torres Barcelona Thanks for sharing .

I LOVE Shani’s work, I always feel that the persons IN the painting are scrutinising the viewer. Myself I find the paintings more intense than disturbing. I was lucky enough to see her big exhibition at the National Library of Wales a few years ago, breathtaking!

I love your artwork so much! When I draw and when I paint it seems so natural for me to come up with very unusual faces of men and women they just come out of my head. And they too are very creepy. But I absolutely love each one of them. Life is rarely happy all the time, so I think I come up with these characters because of life in general. Always ups and downs. I believe it shows the complexity of myself and can be seen with an open mind in other people. The struggles in my life, so much like your artwork also comes out in mine. Keep up the videos. I truly enjoy them. ❤🎨🎨🎨
