I met him a few years after he did " The Last Samuri". I went up to him and introduced my self, I told him he played my favorite character in that movie.
He was humbled and happy that I recognized him. He was so polite, a true gentleman. After his dinner he asked for me and thanked me again. I am a restaurant manger in Hollywood and have dealt with many celebrities, alot of them are SHIT!!! Mr. Hiroyuki was one of the nicest people I have met in Hollywood, again a true gentleman.
He is absolutely killing it in Shogun... that entire show is incredible ! every frame
The "Shogun" series cemented my love on his acting.
he was more than just an actor for that series, but also one of the director/producer. You can safely say that it was HIS show.
I think he deserves more screen time in every Hollywood movie he acted 🤔Sanada Hiroyuki fan from India 🙏🏻
Wooow wait what!? 30k views that's crazy!!
But more than that it's even crazier to see how many more comments there are!!
It's amazing to be able to interact with other Sanada Hiroyuki san fans or even Japanese movie lovers.
Thank you so much this was so much fun thanks to all of you and your comments and I hope you also had even the slightest bit of joy from the video and my crazy stupidity☺
Sanada-san is now an International treasure.
Yep he truly is! What a living legend!!
from spandex wearing space ninja to a sophisticated, intelligent and calculating shogun, he is a great actor who truly loves his job and fully committed to his profession.
I'm just discovering Sanada after watching Mortal Kombat and it's just awesome to go back and see all of his film accomplishments. Thank you!
Ahh Mortal Kombat Sanada san was beauty!! Yeah I loved all the things Sanada san had done even before his Hollywood time. And THANK YOU for the comment!!
I am Japanese grandfather.
I am very happy Hiroyuki is famous in other country.
Hiroyuki was very famous in Japan before hollywood.
He was handsome and superstar
That was his first America movie ❤❤❤❤
@@StationWagonLivingI think it was the last samurai
I remember early 80's when Sho Kosugi was "The Ninja" in Hollywood. Sanada was "The Ninja" in the Japanese VHS we got, with Sonny Chiba as the Shogun.
40 years later it comes full circle with him as the Ninja in MK and then the titular Shogun
Thank you for this video i had no idea he was such a legend before he worked for Hollywood. No wonder why hes producing and acting in the samurai drama "shogun" hes perfect for it
Thank you so much for watching the video!! I'm so glad that you were able to find out more about Sanada Hiroyuki san's past works. Sorry you found it through my weird craziness though😅
But thank you so much for the comment!!😊
He has been fine as hell his adult life!!!
He was born SPICY!
Truer words have never been SPOKEN!!! HE DANG FINE!!!
Extra extra spicy!!
But he just gets hotter with age..
yea, I am not ashamed to say I have a man crush on him.
I had no idea how incredible his career has been. I loved him in Shogun. He is magnetic. He just draws you in!
Sanada Hiroyuki: hottest Oyaji alive ❤
Loool Oyaji I love that😁😆
Thanks for the great comment!
no wonder why he's a very good actor. he's one of my fave.
Yep he's such an amazing actor. Looking back it made me realize how many genre's he's actually acted in.
Same one of my favs too😄
Thank you for the comment!
TAIHEIKI is his important drama.
he acted Takauji Ashikaga. (first SHOGUN of Muromachi era)
very hard story like GoT.
Been a fan ever since Taiheiki was broadcasted in NYC in the early nineties👍
Twilight Samurai, best movie.
I don't even need to add to that.
Great comment!!
Tasogare Seibei 😍I adore that movie.
That's the first time I ever saw him act. Cried my eyes out. So good!
Exactly!! Tasogare Seibei is such a masterpiece.
that makes two of us. I cried when I watched it too
He’s always been one of my favorite Japanese actors , but this deep dive made me love him more. One of those actors that just gets better and better with age.
Need to add. Hiroyuki Sanada plays the Fool to Nigel Hawthorne’s King Lear in the London Shakespearean stage production of the classic play. He really worked on his English for that play.
Ohhh yes definitely the Fool to Nigel Hawthorne’s King Lear was a major part of what started Sanada Hiroyuki's Career outside of Japan. I also wanted to save that for a video I was thinking of making talking about his Era where he works and acts outside of Japan.
Legend of Eight Samurai(Satomi Hakkenden)is a film based on the famous Japanese literary classic, a massive 98-volume, 106-volume work that began publication in 1814 and took 28 years to complete in 1842. It is one of the most representative works of caricature literature of the Edo period and one of the classics of Japanese long biographical novels.
Now this is top tier knowledge.
Thank you so much for the informative comment😲
Additionally, Dragon Ball was inspired by legend of eight samurai and monkey- Chinese origin, well known Japanese drama in 60-70s.
Sanada San in spandex was very famous in Europe. Sankukai was basically the start of the sentai in France. Loved it.
Yeah everyone watched Sankukai!
Yep Ayato. But he was also in Bioman.
@@GOGOAKUMAN Who was he in Bioman?
@@jeanbiroute the captain of the archery team, I forgot his name. He discovered Yellow's secret identity.
NO WAY REALLY!! Oh my gosh I never knew that it was that popular in France.
Thank you so much for sharing this that's so amazing!!🤯😀
The first time I saw him was in The Last Samurai. I never would have imagined he would become more popular than Ken Watanabe
I loved that movie and I think Sanada was perfect for his role. I expected to see more of Ken who’s a great actor but we’ve seen Sanada in more movies since Last Samurai.
Literally it's crazy how far Sanada Hiroyuki san has come from The Last Samurai.
Same I agree. Not gonna lie though I would like to see Sanada Hiroyuki san and Ken Watanabe san be in another movie together again
Yes, but Sanada has much longer acting career. He was in Japan Action Club under Sunny Chiba -known in Kill Bill-. He’s good any action movies but a little bit old? Ken & Hiro both can act Satsujin (sword fight combats ).
I came here after watching shogun, his acting skills on Toranaga was outstanding! He never disappoints as an actor. great video btw
This was hilarious 😂 but also amazing amount of research esp with those earlier films. You don’t mention it here but I love Roundabout Midnight, reminds me of childhood because I grew up in Tokyo in the early 2000’s 😊 thanks so much for making this video! I hope you do more ❤
OHHH MYYY GOSH!!! You're a legend for knowing that one! Yap I watched Round about Midnight (真夜中まで) when I was a young kid. That's actually amazing. Thank you so much for the lovely kind comment and bringing me down memory lane😍
I’m in love with this man! ❤
That makes the two of us!! kyaaaaa!!😆😍
OMG he was such an adorable little boy. Sooooo cute 😊
I couldn't agree more. Sanada san when he was young was such a angel... and still is😊😊
Sanada is well-known in France, he was one of the first Transforming hero from Japan Ayato in the series Sankukai (Uchu kara no messeji).
Until your comment and a few others I literally didn't know that San ku kai Message from Space was well known in France. I love that so much!!
Thank you so much for the comment!😄
@@gemzdesu it was a BIIIIG hit.
As kids we used to sing the intro when fighting. 🤣🤣🤣
San Ku kai, Bioman, Specterman, but the biggest of all Japanese heroes in France was Space Serif Gavan (we call him X-or)
The first Hiroyuki Sanada’s movie I watch was Ninja in the Dragon’s Den. I love that movie
Same I love Ninja in the Dragon's Den! It's so good!!
I remember once I was replicating the hanging fight scene that Sanada san did!!
It didn't end well🙄😍
Legend of the Eight Samurai 1983 is my first and favorite, Ninja in the Dragon’s Den is ranked 2nd, watched that movie more than 50 times as a kid in the early 90's.
Same here. But for some reason, the VHS I have says his name was Henry Sanada.
@@aclogarta probably for the international audience, just like sonny chiba in his international movies, his japanese name is Shinichi chiba
high school teacherwas a kind of social movements in japan. it is my favorite tv drama ever,
Yep you're so right and it's one of my favorites too!
I mean it was so good no wonder it was also one of the most watched tv dramas in Japan in it's time.
Thank you for the comment!
Nice to see Japanese names getting spelled in the order they are supposed to be, like "Sanada Hiroyuki" instead of the westernised "Hiroyuki Sanada". His given name is "Hiroyuki", and it was given by his parents as a sound that _follows_ the family name (Sanada), not the other way around. If I said "DiCaprio Leonardo" or "Biden Joe", that would not only sound odd in English but also go against the flow intended by the person's parents, and that's the equivalent of inverting Japanese names, putting the family name after the given name.
On one hand, western names are spelled by Japanese people in the original order (the given before the family), because they respect the foreign convention even though it's the opposite of what they are used to for the domestic names in their country; on the other hand, Japanese names are spelled by western people habitually in the opposite order.
_ Which sounds more rational, Toyota Corolla or Corolla Toyota?
@@jimtakahashi4638
It's like "Day/Month/Year" vs "Year/Month/Day": it depends on factors such as sorting (as in spreadsheets) or which end is more useful information (as in when differentiating the dates by the year rather than the day is more purposeful). "Month/Day/Year" (the American way) is equivalent to "L. Samuel Jackson" or "J. Michael Fox", it's irrational.
@@mirandansa : Yes, in some cases, in what year something was written may well be more important than the month/date.
And, in general, zooming in, in other words, going from general to particular is more logical and useful. Think about sorting out international letters/parcels with addresses (destinations) written on them. You must make sure of the destination country 1st of all, not the other way round. Categorizing things by the concept of tree diagrams is scientific, indeed.
Koukou-Kyoushi (High School Teacher) was the turning his image drama for me. It was heart wrenching sad drama about love between a high school teacher and his student who was sexual abused by her own father. Remembering that drama still hurts me.
I totally agree this drama was a big part of Sanada san's career.
Especially in terms of his transition from a big action star into an actor.
I actually would love to watch this drama again now.
Thank you so much for the comment!!😄
Dude, your humorous narration deserves a sub.
He deserves a Grammy awards
Literally I couldn't agree more!!!
😂 I giggled all the way through this tribute story, well done☆
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Thank you sooo much for the lovely comment and putting a smile on my face😁😁
Loved him in the ring!!
Sameee!! I couldn't go to the toilet by myself for some time but I loved him in the ring tooo!

Thank you for the comment😄
I loved the narrative and the voice "acting" on this . GO SANADA SANN!!!
One of my idols.
One of my idols too!!😊

great video and I also like your humor!
Aww you're too kind😊but it makes the video so much more worth it
Thank you so much for the lovely comment!!
Great video! Loved the sound effects and commentary! Funny as hell lol
He did some voice acting back in the day too.
I remember seeing him in Hakkenden when I was a kid. Good times with VHS in the 80s lol
His voice is so calm and beautiful!
Ahh VHS Hakkenden times is such a crazy trip down memory lane😀😀
@@gemzdesu he played the leading role in what is probably one of my all time favorite historical fiction animes.. The Dagger of Kamui ; highly recommended movie. It takes place during the bakumatsu period right before and during the Meiji Restoration, check it out if you ever have the chance. The live action movie Tasogare Seibei was my favorite of his too. Yamada Yoji movies are always feature compelling storytelling or just a good time.
He was pretty good on my favorite show of all time, Kage no Gundan.
Ohh you legend what a pick yes!! Sonny Chiba san and Sanada Hiroyuki together in Kage no Gundan was such a beauty!
Thank you for the comment😄
This video is funny as hell.
Kyaaa!! Thank you so much for the kind words!!😆😆😆
Ironically, my favorite role of his wasn't any of the samurai stuff. It was his roles in Sunshine and Helix that I really liked. I am more of a sci-fi nerd though.
I'm so glad you said that! I of course love all the action roles he does but when he does roles outside of action... oh my gosh he slays!! I loved him in Helix too!!
This is a fantastic video! Thank you so much! 😊
No THANK YOU so much. Hearing your comment makes this video all the more worth it!

Sanada san in The Last Samurai was amazing! But then again same I love in every movie I watch😆
Thank you for the comment!
You are so funny!!!!!.....😍🤪 Thanks a lot for this!!!!!.... (I have a big crush on him!!!!...)
I watch more Japanese movies than American movies. My personal favorite doctor is Tadanobu Asano. But this actor you’ve shown is phenomenal and my favorite movie of his is called “twilight samurai”. It is a beautiful film a near perfect.
Ohhh my YES Tadanobu Asano san is amazing and another Japanese living legend!!
And you definitely have beautiful taste mentioning "Twilight Samurai".
Thank you so much for the comment🥰
I love the novel that ``Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei)'' is based on. There are many historical novels in Japan, but I'm a fan of Shuhei Fujisawa's "Twilight 〜". Although he does not create flashy stories, he is very lyrical and is a top novelist when it comes to depicting the sadness of being a samurai. I even traveled to the prefecture where this novelist was born.
That's why I also loved the movie "Twilight 〜," and I still remember that the acting by Mr. Sanada, who starred in it, was brilliant.
Hello from Japan
I didn’t know Tadanobu Asano was a doctor.
As someone who's been following Sanada-san a while now but likely got here because of the Shogun-skewing algorithm, I sincerely thank you. I wish you all the subs.
You're making me blush! Thank you for such kind words😊😊
I sincerely THANK YOU for such an lovely comment!
This is a very funny yet thorough way of showcasing Hiroyuki Sanada’s work through the years. Kudos to the content creator!
Aww thank you soooo much for the crazy nice comment!!
You made my day really appreciate it so much!😊😀
Well done. However, you missed mentioning SONY CHIBA ( = Chiba Shinichi) who established the Japan Action Club that trained young Snada as an action actor. Sony Chiba was a famous action star in the world.
Yes definitely!! I want to make a whole other video on Chiba Shinichi san and Sanada Hiroyuki!
The Japan Action Club is so legendary that if I added it in this video I wouldn't stop talking and the video would be wayyy longer🤣
Thank you for the comment!!
All his movies he is really great 😍
OOOOhhhh DEFINITELY!! Truly a living legend even before he reached Hollywood
Yes yes and yes. Thank you for sharing us his journey. ❤
Hopefully you will do Hiroyuki Sanada on John Wick 4 too. Good god, thats the moment im like melting in my seat in cinema.
Thank you so much for this comment
Ohhhhh holy YEP I definitely would love to talk about john wick 4 it's just not out in Japan yet... Curse you JAPAN!!
Haha! This is actually really cool! Thank you for this!
Here in America, we only get slight exposure to guys like Sanada Hiroyuki, Ken Watanabe, and others. We never really have access to see the earlier careers of many foreign movie stars. I like Sanada Hiryuki's work. It's cool to see some of the stuff he worked on as a younger man. To his credit, he was a really handsome guy. I get why he made it in films.
Oh my thank you so much for the lovely comment!
Yes amount of work and talent he displayed before he even acted outside of Japan is crazy.
Lol and yep for sure Sanada Hiroyuki san was a very handsome man with gorgeous muscles🥰
very kool/cool actor ever at the top and best in the level
Yep and even after all the years still just getting better and better
Great video, made me laugh a lot.
God he got finer and finer as he aged

San ku Kai was huge in Europe and Latin America
Yep, SanKuKai and Spectreman were my first time seeing Japanese transfoming heroes, fail in love right away.
Wow I literally didn't know that San ku kai (Message from Space) was popular in Europe and Latin America.

Ninja in the Dragon's Den was my childhood.
Best Portrait of a Ninja ever! And my favorite Movie
Ninja in the Dragin's Den was just beautiful😍
Especially as a kid who loved martal arts, of course that movie made me do some crazy jumps around my room trying emulate Sanada san and Conan Lee
4:45 Wow...................................Wooooo~~~~Yeah....................🙈❤❤❤
😙😙😙😙Kyaaahhh the scene is just too.... kyaaaaa!!!
My favorite of Sanada Hiroyuki is Mahjong Horoki. That work is a true gem. It's one of the few works directed by an illustrator Wada Makoto! Other actors are also on point--there's no shortage of great films they have been featured on.
Also---of Makai Tensho, at the time (and mostly today) people's fave was the demon king, Kenji Sawada, who was THE superstar at the time.
What a gem of a video on a killer actor !!
San ku kai hum…. We were all watching that program in France !
Yep literally thanks to your comment and others I learnt that San ku kai (Message from Space) was popular in France and other countries.
That is so crazy cool to me!
Thank you so much for the comment!🤗
Really love seeing him in kaito ruby! A hidden gem from his movies, really deviates from his badass samurai role. Hiroyuki sanada’s truly a fantastic actor
We can say that 70’s and 80’s were… wild in his case :D
He’s amazing
Hey I remember the space ninja series back in the 80’s. Never knew he was one of the two man team. I remember they flew in space in an actual old school ship. Very MMPR style
I definitely want to re watch the space ninja series😊
What a wonderful actor 👏👏
You should have mentioned that he was a Sonny Chiba protégé! Hai Karate!
Aged like wine.
Yooo! He as in a Sentai series! I'm a tokusatsu fan & I just know this now!🤯
He's actually pretty famous here in France for his spandex role in the early 80's
I still have several dvds in my shed that he featured in early in his career, I always enjoyed Ninja in the Dragons Den for the amazing martial arts display …. You didn’t realise how good he was till you’ve seen that! Been a fan since the 90s, whether going toe to toe with Jackie Chan with such technical ability, until killing it as a great actor in quality movies that everyone knows now.
He is the real Scorpion in live action period easy peasy Japanesy
I loved his scorpion! Love that easy peasy Japanesy!😂
