    I met him a few years after he did " The Last Samuri". I went up to him and introduced my self, I told him he played my favorite character in that movie.
    He was humbled and happy that I recognized him. He was so polite, a true gentleman. After his dinner he asked for me and thanked me again. I am a restaurant manger in Hollywood and have dealt with many celebrities, alot of them are SHIT!!! Mr. Hiroyuki was one of the nicest people I have met in Hollywood, again a true gentleman.

    Legend of Eight Samurai(Satomi Hakkenden)is a film based on the famous Japanese literary classic, a massive 98-volume, 106-volume work that began publication in 1814 and took 28 years to complete in 1842. It is one of the most representative works of caricature literature of the Edo period and one of the classics of Japanese long biographical novels.

    Nice to see Japanese names getting spelled in the order they are supposed to be, like "Sanada Hiroyuki" instead of the westernised "Hiroyuki Sanada". His given name is "Hiroyuki", and it was given by his parents as a sound that _follows_ the family name (Sanada), not the other way around. If I said "DiCaprio Leonardo" or "Biden Joe", that would not only sound odd in English but also go against the flow intended by the person's parents, and that's the equivalent of inverting Japanese names, putting the family name after the given name.
    On one hand, western names are spelled by Japanese people in the original order (the given before the family), because they respect the foreign convention even though it's the opposite of what they are used to for the domestic names in their country; on the other hand, Japanese names are spelled by western people habitually in the opposite order.

      @@jimtakahashi4638
      It's like "Day/Month/Year" vs "Year/Month/Day": it depends on factors such as sorting (as in spreadsheets) or which end is more useful information (as in when differentiating the dates by the year rather than the day is more purposeful). "Month/Day/Year" (the American way) is equivalent to "L. Samuel Jackson" or "J. Michael Fox", it's irrational.

    • @jimtakahashi4638
      @jimtakahashi4638 14 днів тому

      @@mirandansa : Yes, in some cases, in what year something was written may well be more important than the month/date.
      And, in general, zooming in, in other words, going from general to particular is more logical and useful. Think about sorting out international letters/parcels with addresses (destinations) written on them. You must make sure of the destination country 1st of all, not the other way round. Categorizing things by the concept of tree diagrams is scientific, indeed.

      I love the novel that ``Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei)'' is based on. There are many historical novels in Japan, but I'm a fan of Shuhei Fujisawa's "Twilight 〜". Although he does not create flashy stories, he is very lyrical and is a top novelist when it comes to depicting the sadness of being a samurai. I even traveled to the prefecture where this novelist was born.
      That's why I also loved the movie "Twilight 〜," and I still remember that the acting by Mr. Sanada, who starred in it, was brilliant.
      Hello from Japan

    Here in America, we only get slight exposure to guys like Sanada Hiroyuki, Ken Watanabe, and others. We never really have access to see the earlier careers of many foreign movie stars. I like Sanada Hiryuki's work. It's cool to see some of the stuff he worked on as a younger man. To his credit, he was a really handsome guy. I get why he made it in films.

    My favorite of Sanada Hiroyuki is Mahjong Horoki. That work is a true gem. It's one of the few works directed by an illustrator Wada Makoto! Other actors are also on point--there's no shortage of great films they have been featured on.
    Also---of Makai Tensho, at the time (and mostly today) people's fave was the demon king, Kenji Sawada, who was THE superstar at the time.
