That's how physics can be taught, brilliantly, with few math involved. Coming from a "strong" mathematical background, I am yearning to see how he teaches electromagnetism so low key. It certainly was not like this when I studied engineering, having sets of PDEs or body integrals that packed the blackboard. PhD Lewin YOU ARE AWESOME

Why are they being taught this in a university?
You can be sure every student there in 26-100 has had at least one physics AP course in HS, and so has seen all this material already. As i recall, MIT does not let you place out of 8.01 even with AP credit.

Sir, I am in 11th grade and soon to be in 12th.I loved physics till 10th because my teacher taught us practically. But I got enrolled in a very reputed coaching institute and lost the interest in studies in general because they pressurize us and want us to learn evrything,mug up evrything rather than being practical. I only did Biology and I have to give NEET 22. I want to go to MIT and learn physics and other subject with their usage in the world.I will give NEET but I want to see the use of text book in the world. You have helped me gain my confidence back in physics and removed my physics phobia. And I have started studying back. You are the best teacher I have had.

I don't know why, but I've always struggled with determining the direction of my cross products. Your explanation was/is much more intuitive than any of the countless others I've received. It finally makes sense! Thanks so much.

Physics is such an amazing subject where you can relate what you are studying even your daily lives. Sir your lecture was just mind blowing. ive always hated phys since i could never understand the marriage between science and mathematics......however when i was watching a youtube video lecture one of these videos came in my recommendations. vectors have been the most confusing topics to learn for me and Prof. Lewin makes it soooo easy to learn, to the point that I've begun to love physics!! thank you so much for your dedication to your students, and thank God and the universe that you're so good at what you do!!!

It’s basically very hard
I really like your teaches capability. It's amazing.
just wanted to point out something obvious but it helps me think about throwing a ball. Obviously the ball IS accelerating in the x direction but ONLY as you apply force to it with your arm. After you let go, the velocity is constant (ignoring drag) and THAT moment of letting go is what we define as t=0. If you defined t=0 as when the ball is on the table, the acceleration along x would go every which way depending on how you pick it up and prepare to throw it. Then if you consider the INSTANT before you let go, you are applying the last little bit of force (acceleration) parallel to the initial velocity of the ball. Only from that moment of letting go does the x velocity stop changing. To get x velocity constant (ax=0), he sets t=0 as the exact moment that you let go of the ball. Or it may be easier to think of him setting t=0 as the moment AFTER you let go of the ball
The same logic applies when a rocket stops burning fuel and begins to coast in its orbit (or if it didn't have enough fuel, crashes back down to earth). There IS an acceleration in the x component UNTIL the ship stops spitting out fuel. But once the engines stop, the only (relatively) constant acceleration is provided by the earth in the direction of its center. Of course there are the sun and moon's tidal forces that are always changing direction in relation to earth and its satellites. But the only constant acceleration is in the direction of earth's center of mass, which we are WAY closer to than any other massive object in the universe.

I just did this experiment with my class...their eyeballs nearly popped out of their heads!!
They made me repeat it twice before they believed it, and wanted to know if there were magnets.

I believe I first came across this idea in a highschool intro to tirg class. We didn't have an actual experiment, but we discussed it briefly, as a hypothetical of someone in an ejector seat of a car that continued at the same speed, and with the seat shooting straight up. Exact same math, but with a kind of spy theme to it, ya know?
I think for me it actually stuck better having to think though it in my head without seeing proof, but yeah, it is nice to actually see an example now :)
