It's more of a parody of how often period pieces use flowery language in their dialogue but your average Civil War soldier would never have such a good vocabulary
It sounds like you’ve never read any old letters. The average person had a much better command of the English language back then.

@@WaitingtoHit Plus it took forever to get a letter so if you knew how to write you'd generally want to write enough that the other person could read it for a while and you were taught to value long sentences with a lot of descriptive language. And if you didn't know how to write or read you were probably paying someone to write/read the letter for you and then it would be awkward to be more explicit and you'd likely be more brief and to the point such as "Take care of the children and please confirm we haven't lost more cows"

Funny Lee SNL has never been shy of pushing the boundaries. It all depends on how they present it. A trash talking chick is not necessarily sexist. There are all kinds of women out there.

You could tell they were working out the kinks with this sketch. Future ones with Mikey Day were gold .

@@Ironmillos This isn't the middle ages my guy, Civil War was in the 1860s, nowhere near a "few hundreds of years" before Google. Last veterans died in the Cold War, when nukes and jet fighters were around. Stalin had died by the time the last verified vets did.

Fady Gabr The actress - sure, she can't help it and who cares. Actual people of those times though were forced to become right handed as children largely because writing in ink with left hand is pretty much impossible.

Obviously the eloquent soldier would have said "flower of your womanhood" for the Vjay and Milk Bags instead of the crude "titz".
Not sure if I’m just really high but I genuinely think the joke that makes the entire skit is Bill Hader just inexplicably walking into the set as Abe Lincoln and weeping over the soldier’s body. I didn’t laugh at all throughout the skit but as soon as he showed up I was on the goddamn floor in hysterics
we may both be really high... cause I though the Abe Lincoln walk-on was hysterical

I think the implication is that he showed a confederate soldier or sympathizer a map that included Union army positions or battle plans.
