- The Oakford 1400 failed miserably on my test I did. I decided enough was enough. I really wanted the 1400 to work. But oh well.
I am now the proud owner of the Traeger Pro 22. Simple and guess what…it works!
Really glad I kept following you on this Nexgrill. I like a cabinet for true smoke flavor. I have had smoke grills, Pit Boss Classic and Lorado and a Camp Chef Deluxe 24. The smoke was week Compared to my Pit Boss Copperhead 3 & 5. I have had my 3 for over 3 years now and it has never failed me. It sits out on my patio here in South Dakota year round with pellets in the hopper. Wind, snow, rain or the dark of not phased it. I don't pay attention to its temp probes I use a Maverick. I think I'll keep it. For anyone who wants a cabinet I strongly recommend the Pit Boss Series 3, 5 or 7 and their two Sportsman models. They are also affordable for the average backyard griller. I have smoked a 15 hour 10 lb butt with no problems.
I agree! Everyone needs to stay away from this model! I think it was rushed to market.
Ive been using the cheapest original Masterbuilt electric smoker since they were first avsilable. They last about 4 years. Then get another one for cheap. No app. No bluetooth. Just set the temp. Set the time. Add chips as needed. I use a temp probe through the vent. A remote monitor makes it very close to set and forget. I almost bought one of these
After watching your videos ... I'll stsy with cheapest, basic Masterbuilt unit.
Sometimes simple is better. The Pro 22 is a no frills pellet smoker. No app, no Bluetooth, and no wifi. And it works like a dream.
That's so sad, these new products need to be majorly product tester before they put it out on the market. Glad the switch to traeger is doing the trick.
Now the question is traeger vs z grill!!!
I agree! It would be great if not for all the bugs!
I nearly got one, but due to me having limited space I went with the Traeger.
Thank you for testing and testing and testing this unit. I would not have had the patience that you showed. You made a good decision not keeping it.
I was hoping this was a cheaper solution to the Camp Chef XXL Pro WiFi Vertical or to the Pit Boss Pro Series Elite 6 WiFi Vertical.
Thanks again!
Thank you. I have a video planned about my first cook on the Pro 22.
Het Bo, I bought mine a few days later than you, I used LumberJack and Bear Mountain pellets. Had same issues. Also, had mine exceed a temp of 575 which freaked me out. My main issue would be the pellets would stop feeding. Like you say it was not a set and forget it.
I returned mine and went with a Trager Timberline 850. Thus far 4 cooks and no issues ever
Awesome! I wish the 1400 worked. But after hearing from so many it just has bugs in it. I hope they fix the issues.
Today I put four oven thermometers in my Oakford 1400 and tested it. The other day my tri-tip came out super rare and I suspected the thing was running cool. And it is. It runs consistently 50 degrees cool - 175 at 225 set, 200 at 250 and 225 at 275. This is not a deal breaker as I can just set it higher but it is very far off the set temperature and I am going to contact the company to see if they can help.
Good luck!
I use Pit Boss competition blend pellets, but I've also got a Pit Boss unit. That being said, I've never had the issues you are. I hope the Traeger works out better for you man. I was worried about that Nexgrill and it seems what I was worried about wasn't the main issue.
I’m happy with it!
Bo Ive used My pitboss for 5 summers now and only pellets Ive ever used were the same brand name. only clean it out once a summer... have cooked several 20 hour briskets and numerous other cooks. have never turned off a grill during a cook to do any of that. hope this helps
Nexgrill just wasn’t a good brand in my case.
@@rhandyman30 I like PitBioss’s design! But I love ZGrill’s designs!
Bo I just wanted to let you know I used the Traeger pellets in my Nexgrill 1400 from Home Depot and they worked great but I didn't do a 16-hour cook. If I remember correctly my cook was for 7 hours and I had no issue with temperature I hope this helped you out I will be putting a pork butt in the smoker soon so that will be a long cook. Keep on smoking
Good luck! I hope it works for you!
I got a Nexgrill 1400 and I have the same issues, what a disappointment .
I can also state that with a pellet grill I had to use a smoke tube. Never had to do that with my cabinets.
Good point! Next cook I do I’m going to try to use my tube.
@@BosBackyardBBQ It does help with the tube. I've tried Pit Boss, Traeger, Cusinart pellets and the best so far is the Lumberjack's. They have low ash and just burn better. As I said I have yet to try the Bear Mountain. It's tough to try and find some of these locally. All else fails there's Amazon. I never trust any of the controllers on the grills I've had. My Pit Boss three along with the others I mentioned are all analog. My Camp Chef has the WiFi and was the best of those controllers and was closest to my Maverick. Those grills and smokers will fluctuate. If you want accuracy I would think you'd need electric and not pellet. No fun or adventure in that.
I was hoping I could use this as a overnight smoker. I planned to buy some hooks to hang larger cuts from the top rack and cook 8+ hours. But that doesnt seem possible if it shuts down after 8ish hours from ash build-up.
Yeah, it was a disappointment!
You commented about pellets. I prefer Lumberjack. I have a thing for pecan. I hae yet to try Bear Mountain. Not a fan of Pit Boss or Traeger.
Oh! Cool, please provide a link to what you use. I would love to try them.
Bo on startup of the smoker you're only supposed to push the auger button one time that's what they told me when I was on the phone with Nexgrill. Keep on smoking
Thanks for sharing! 👍 Let us know how it does!
I think the issue would be the pellets. I just did a 7 hour cook with mine, and I had next to no ash to clean.
That could be true. I’m glad it is working for you and hope it continues to do so. Keep us posted how it does.
@@BosBackyardBBQ figured I'd do an update. Did a 16 hour smoke, no issues. The temperature did fluctuate a little bit for the first hour or so, but evened out to within 4 degrees of the setting. Only issue I'm having with the smoker is that I can't get it to connect to my WiFi to use the app, but that's not really a big issue for me.
@@evanmckenzie8148 I’m happy that it’s working out for you! 👍
@@evanmckenzie8148what pellets you using
I just go to Google and type in Lumberjack pellets. Personally I don't use their blends. I prefer the straight wood like pecan, a really good cherry, hickory and mesquite. I have a thing about mesquite when I do jerky. Aren't you located in Ohio?
Oh I’m in IL. Thanks! I’ll look them up!
Close enough. I was born and grew up in a burb of Cleveland and moved out west. Been in Sioux Falls for over 30 years. I'm just an 80 year old fat man who prefers to grill than use the stove.
I heard they leave.a.lot of ash so be mostly wood. I use Bear Mountain and also thinking of trying Rotal Oaks 100% Charcoal pellets. I hear they have a charcoal flavor. Are water repellent and at a high leat level
@@erichardman5458 I haven't tried Royal Oak. I do know on Lumberjack I use less pellets than the others I've tried and I seem to use less pellets than the others I've tried. I really want to get some Bear Mountain and try those. I know with the Lumberjack's I can taste the flavor of the wood better than anything else I've tried. I was grossly unimpressed with Pit Boss charcoal pellets. I have a couple bags of their char hickory I got for $5 a bag. I have yet to use them so I'm not in a position to pass judgement.
I was really hoping this was going to work and save a few bucks in the process. Sigh guess I'll get a kamado joe.
Yeah, me too. But better to get one that works than one that has bells and whistles that doesn’t.
Well how about telling what kind of pellets you were using!
The pellets I was using was a competition blend from Sam’s club.
I ran mine 17 hours on a brisket 0 issues
Good! Glad to hear that!
For god sake, chill out on the over expressive hand gestures
Will do!
