The Captain's (Dave Brock) guitar playing here is so fantastic and heartfelt , what a beautiful moment and incredible video here, the world needs to see and know!
Mathew Wright does a good job of singing this, lucky sod wished i could get the chance to sing with the Hawks n Dave, always loved Spirit Of The Age,always one of my favourites along with high rise and many others, long may the Space Ship Hawkwind fly and keep taking us on the great adventures that they have taken us for 40 years and beyond, i have followed them since i was a teenager, had great times at their gigs met many good people from all over the world, Long Live Dave Brock.
My favourite version of this song was when Tim Blake was on Keyboards. 1979 - 1980. Saw them a few times with that line up, The best for me were the 2 Lyceum gigs in July 1980.
Directed by Peter M. Kershaw (who saw Hawkwind live 32 times over the years). Peter is currently working on Features in SW USA. Shot in the old City Road Television Studios at Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle, UK and produced by Duchy Parade Films.
I saw them every time they came to N.Y.C or Jersey. About 8 times and I had Row AA at the Space Ritual show in ‘73. Stacia stopped dancing and sat on my lap. Dave Wyndorf was sitting in the seat next to me, we saw EVERYONE together back in the day. Stacia takes the joint we had been smoking and helps herself to two big hits, says thanks to us and resumes dancing. How’s that for a story? God, her tits were gorgeous, she was completely nude and yes, I could smell that musky smell emanating from her VJ. I didn’t wash that leg for two weeks.⚡️🤩😱🤘🫦👁️👅💫✨
I must admit that I suffered a moment of post coital depression when this version ended. Always been one of my favourite songs which I covered in a garage band back in the early 90's.
The ambiance this band produces truly gives them an edge, any new material would be welcome with all that holiday ambience.the more depth the better, they can really pump up the eclectic and get those photons pumping!
Whoa, this is a wonderful rendition, complete in its "spirit" ...do I need to pull my " been a Hawkwind fan since the 70s?" Mr.Wright did a great job here, lighten up and stay off my lawn you Wankers!!
Thanks Cyconautix for posting this video. I love Hawkwind's mid 70s sophisticated new wave before new wave stuff as much as the more rock Space Ritual album.
as is mine then church of , live 79, Zones, ugg its hard to pic just one of the 500+ as best , hmm calafornia brainstorm is amazing hmm nope first LP i heard that hooked me right in was Levitation. ya no levitation is my #1 then astounding only do to order of listening.
Nice video, finally seen! Being in Australia (and yes, having listened since the 70's :) I finally saw Dave and co perform this and other brilliant material a few years ago. Thanks for posting it!
This is one goshdang mango magnificent song. THe creator of this galazy would smile and have a soy sundae listening, were she awake this century here...
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! the album version is too good to have this diminish it.i this has about as much edge as a cold fish finger.......
I've always wanted to phone in to the wright stuff during their public phone in segments and subtly slip in some lyrics to see if he twigs it "Well yeah there are many problems with underage pregnancy but, well, I guess that's the spirit of the age Matthew"
The vocal performer is Matthew Wright according the posts below. He's not mentioned on Hawkwind's Wikipedia page. It's an interesting delivery, if a bit robotic for me... almost as if he's not super familiar with the song. I prefer Calvert's original angst ridden delivery on QS&C. The bass seems a bit frantic too, not quite as smooth as Adrian Shaw's calm precision. More than just the tone difference between a Rick and an EB3.
I love your musiques actuelles it is good for hawkwind and i love you spirit of thé âgé d âge en âge de lumières en lumières je vois l infini thank you my god Jean Michel
i have a powerful micro-dot in my fridge which i will be dropping this weekend for a Hawkwind night indoors. spirit Of The age is the 1st track on the 15 year old Hawkwind/Dave Brock cassette tape that will launch me into space where i will rendevous with the SS. Starship Hawkind..........I'm On The Case...
@stevobath I've seen them 3 times at the Bournemouth Academy. Lemmy wasn't at any of them, but I swear I saw Jimmy Hill there, in a Clown suit, and smoking a fat cigar.

I like the quantum synth and the guitar shredding. And especially the lyrics. Changeable yet eternal.
