Glad I could help you with that also you can sometimes use a catalytic converter cleaner it's sold at advance auto and usually the a plugged up cat will make the exhaust smell really bad rotten egg smell that cleaner is sold under the Mr Gasket name
My cat was so clogged that when I installed the new manifold it really suffocated my engine now that it was not cracked. The cat inside was literally a rock. Your vid really pushed me to do it. And I did everything including putting on the new cat. God bless

Awesome video !!!!, why does this manifold crack in that same spot and once you had the heat shield off, did you do a soapy water test for manifold leakage.
Howdy Richard, first of all, thank you very much for watching the video. Thank you for your comments. Very kind. I want to go ahead and tell you that as far as all the manifolds cracking in the same place and it seems that way to me all of them that I've ever seen. They all seem to crack in that same place. Not sure why could be just the metal in that area is stressed and it gets fatigued after several heat up and cool down sessions. Or maybe several hundred heat up and cool down sessions and then it cracks could be a casting flaw there? Not really sure. Also, as far as testing the manifold with some sort of soapy water mixture while it's on the engine pretty well impossible because the manifold while it's on the engine you can't do it with it running of course because the the water would just evaporate right away as far as like maybe putting a compressed air hose up the exhaust pipe and doing it that way. I guess somebody could do that but the leak was very very obvious you normally you want to use something like soapy water to tell you where the leak is at. If you can't see it easily in this case I could see it very easily and I repaired it. So I didn't really see a need to do a soapy water test even with the manifold off of the engine. I guess somebody could do that but I was kind of pressed for time. This car had to be up and going and available to the driver my daughter but if somebody wanted to do a pressure test with compressed air and soapy water, I guess anybody could do that. Especially with the manifold off of the engine. I see that would be probably a really good idea but again at the time I was pressed for time so it was. I had to get the car back together going and available to my daughter. Anyway, thank you very much and have a great day and if you have any further questions feel free to ask
@@slantfish65sd Hello and thank you for all that useful information, it makes perfect now, I am going to pull mine but I have to remove the heat shield to visually inspect like you suggested. I didn't see any black soot around the flange that the mannifold connects to the catalytic converter so I am guessing it's the mannifold leaking or the gasket. I am worried about snapping off those four long screw bolts that holds that cover on, I have to find a spot where I can do this job in peace and safety, right now that's my only hold-up. I plan on watching your video again before I start this project for sure. I got a code PO420 with the exhaust smell, it is cat, and or the O2 sensor. I spoke with one guy that wanted to replace the cat without even considering the leak of fumes north of the O2 sensor. Very grateful for you and I will keep you informed as I go along with this, just have to find my work spot. I have a Dodge Journey SXT 2.4 VVT engine 2015 like your engine.
Well, I just finished the job, and again, your video was very helpful. I have a question: I got done and snugged all the bolts down, with a new gasket. Then I started the car and I'm getting smoke pouring up from across the manifold. The new manifold had a lot of oil or grease all over it. Could the smoke be from that, or is it more likely that I screwed something up?
First of all, thank you very much for watching the video. Truly do appreciate it. As far as the smoke conditions coming from your your engine, there is a very likely possibility that the old oil is burning off of the manifold if there is a lot of oil and grease kind of build up on that manifold I would. If it was me I would go and I would spray the manifold down with brake parts cleaner and try to clean as much of that stuff off as possible. If you still are having problems with this, make sure your valve cover gasket isn't loose and it's make sure it isn't leaking. If it's leaking that could be causing you some serious issues. If you can get underneath the car put the car up on some jack stands safely. Get underneath the car and take a light and shine up on the back side of the engine where the exhaust manifold is and clean that entire area off with maybe a couple of cans of brake parts cleaner or something along those lines and try to clean off as much of that old oil and gunk and grease and grime off of there as possible. So to eliminate some of that oil burning, if as far as like the exhaust manifold gasket itself that shouldn't have any effect on oil leaking out anywhere if you didn't do the job correctly as far as the exhaust manifold is concerned, you would know it because you would hear it. They would be you would have a noticeable exhaust leak you. It would be very audible. You would hear it right away. So clean up around that area best you can and that should take care of the problem. If the problem present persists then you got oil leaking out somewhere. Most likely a valve cover gasket. Thank you. God bless
Usually it's been my experience. They haven't been very hard to remove. However, if you're having trouble with yours, you may want to try soaking the bolts at any threaded parts that you can see of the bolts with PB blaster or deep creep made by seafoam. You can find those at any auto parts stores and probably in some of your Walmarts also, if you're having trouble removing the bolts, you can try turning the bolt very little then go and tighten it back up. Keep doing this and each time that you loosen it. You're moving it just a little bit further, but you're going right back. This is something else you can try also too when you're using the penetrating lubricant like seafoam deep creep or PB blaster. You can spray those on the bolts and do this probably several times before you ever have to remove that bolt regardless of whatever it's on also, with the bolts being that source of heat, you could also try starting up the engine that it warm up before you do. Be sure to soak the bolts with penetrating lubricant but start to engine up and let it warm up. Shut it off. Do this maybe two or three times and these tricks will help get the bolts loose also too. You can also try using a torch on the bolts heating up the bolt head itself with like a propane torch. Hope this stuff helps. Thank you very much for watching. If you have any further questions feel free to ask
@@slantfish65sd Thank you my friend, you are the best !!, will use your tips for sure. I like the idea of letting it warm up abit. You are very wise, Will follow up soon to let you know what I find with that heat shield off. Time to get moving...Many blessings always. Talk to you soon.
On most of the Dodge Avengers with the 2.4 l 4 your engine the exhaust flex pipe is usually shortly right after the manifold the main appointment It's usually covered with a woven kind of metal covering
First of all, thank you very much for watching the video and commenting. As for the exact name of that hose, I'm not entirely certain. I'm going to say it is an EGR hose exhaust gas recirculation. If you're looking for that hose and you need to replace it on your avenger, you're probably going to have pretty good luck at like say a salvage yard. Junkyard That's about all I can do for you on that hose. I don't own the car anymore so I hope that helps. Any further questions feel free to ask
On the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the cylinder head is 25 ft.lbs and the best method to tighten the bolts in a circular pattern starting in the center thank you
If you're referring to that hose is at the top of the manifold then yes, you're going to need to plug that up. If you don't, you could have the code come up for the EGR and only that you could have quite a bit of noise coming out of there as well unless you plug it off. But I would also like to say thank you very much for watching video and thank you for your questions
Why are they manifold was replaced was because the old one had a crack in it and it was leaking. I already said in the video that it was leaking but there is a crack in it. That's why I got replaced. I got another manifold. It had a crack in it as well but I took a welder and well of that crack shut
I have a 2013 Avenger and they already put a scanner on it in autozone, it comes out p0420 and the mechanic's scanner says that nothing comes out. I have check engine on I don't know what to do
@@Navi-momos if you're coming up with a code p0420 that's low catalyst efficiency. There's a couple of simple things you can do that are pretty cheap. One is use a fuel system cleaner. Something like seafoam or berrymans B12 chem tool there's also a product known as cataclean. Any of these will help out with a catalyst system efficiency. Basically they're cleaning out the catalytic converter also they're inexpensive to buy or use. Also try taking the car to a different mechanic of the scan tool and see if you can come up with that code if you can afford it. You can buy your own scanner. However, the catalytic converter may be two plugged up and if that's the case then it may have to be replaced, but I would try all of these other options first also, that code p0420 means low oxygen levels in the catalytic converter. You can try looking at your air filter. Make sure it isn't plugged or dirty. Also check out the air intake system getting to the air filter and then from the air filter to the throttle body. Make sure there's no obstructions also the throttle body could be very dirty as well. Cleaning it will help with metering the air more efficiently and getting more air into the engine
Hey there. Great video I also have the same engine make and model avenger... Is replacing the manifold a pretty simple job. Anything I should be worried about..my exaust gets loud while accel. And lack of power. Thanks
Actually replacing the exhaust manifold is not that bad you have a row of bolts where the manifold meets the head just below the valve cover and three bolts on the exhaust manifold flange where the pipe bolts up and there is a bracket that supports the manifold its between the engine block and the manifold it has maybe 4 bolts hope that helps let me know how it goes

Hey I recently be seeing light smoke coming from that same spot you replaced and my muffler has a leak/crack in it I believe do you think this is the problem?(2008 Dodge Avenger 2.4L)
It's very likely the problem I have seen multiple exhaust manifolds for those cars that were all cracked in the same place and creating an exhaust leak either replace the manifold or get the old manifold off and replace it
I'm sorry I meant to say that they all Crack in the same place that is the valley where all the pipes join together they can be welded in that area I did that worked very well providing that you have a tubular steel exhaust manifold and not a cast iron manifold
I have a 2013 chrysler 200 2.4. Had a cracked exhaust manifold. Just got done replacing it with a new one and new gaskets. I tightened the bold as hard as I could. Checked the bolts and they were loose so again I cranked em as much as I could. Started it up and still has the rumble noise. Any ideas? Thanks
Make sure nothing is getting in the way of putting the exhaust manifold on the head also you may have pulled the studs out of the head which if you did you destroyed the threads in the cylinder head the torque specs os 25 ft lbs.of torque
Also if the threads were damaged in the heads you can use something called a heli-coil inserts to repair the problem threads let me know how it works out
I have a 2011 avenger as well. Has a loud exhaust leak sound when i start it. Sound goes away after a min or so. I also get code p0418 p2433. Would the manifold cause that?
The codes you are referring two are in reference to the secondary air injection systems they could be caused. Those codes could be caused by the crack in the exhaust manifold. However, there could also be an electrical issue that could be causing this code to come up as well. If you have a noise right after startup, then most likely you have a crack in the exhaust manifold. I have found that a lot of these vehicles suffer from that problem. The best way to fix the cracked exhaust manifold is to either replace it with a new one which is pretty expensive or to have somebody weld the crack up. That's what I did on mine
