The story behind the song makes it so incredible. The author lost his business and his house in the great Chicago fire. He sent his wife and daughters to England to get away for a while and the ship sunk and he lost both of his daughters. On a ship to meet his wife in England, he wrote this song while over the exact spot his daughters were lost. Through all of that he could still write that it is well with my soul.

He and his wife, Anna, lost four daughters on that trip, not two. And shortly before he lost his wealth in the Great Chicago Fire, he and Anna lost their little son to scarlet fever. Can you imagine the grief at having lost ALL FIVE of your children??? 😭😭

This isn't about who has the "better voice". This is about JESUS. They both are annointed ministers.
I was working on 9/11, "birthing babies". We went through panic and anger, and around 11AM, we turned off the radio, joined hands for a prayer, and spent the rest of the day caring for the 13 babies we had born that day. Around 4PM, my daughter called to tell me there would be an interfaith service at our church, and the choir, of which I was a member, would be singing, and could I be there? I said yes, and asked what we would be singing. It was Mark Hayes arrangement of "It is Well With My Soul". I burst into teats for the first time that horrible day. I still get a lump in my throat every time I hear or sing this song.
I am 78 this year and grew up in the Nazarene church singing this in the choir! Still moves me to tears! ❤
My Beautiful Mother, Best Friend taught me after my Earthly Father suddens passing while on vacation held it all together until we returned back and the 1st night she slipped into bed with my little sister. Then I heard her emotions, crying etc. I was very blessed to have both parents that excepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, Amen. Before we had our 1st night at the motel my Earthly Father in the car sat and turned to my brother and I about Jesus. He told us that we'll have a new and glorified body if we surrender to Jesus. He wasn't afraid to die and I feel my Earthly Father was telling us "It is Well With My Soul." He never told my Mother he was dying of cancer. He loved her very very much. Every morning early my Mother had her relationship with our Heavenly Father. Reading Gods Holy Word(Bible), praying, devotions, and praising our Heavenly Father John 3:16 ❤. Jesus paid in full for our sins. He is the Way, the Truth and Life- Eternity with Him in his Kingdom Come! THIS SONG was sung at my Mothers funeral. She loved these peaceful words. Yes I agree. We all will pass through and I couldn't disagree because I agree. "IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL." You all sang this so beautifully ❤! Dad passed at 58. Mom at 94. I will see them again but see Jesus 1st. He made the way for me. We've got a faithful God don't we?

I love this song! One of my favorites. I just lost my Mom on January 27th, 2023. It was well with her soul. She was one of the greatest, faithful, Christian women I’ve ever known. Miss you and love you lots Mom.😘

According to the Gospel of Mark, he endured the torment of crucifixion 6 hours, but He also suffered the anguish of all the sins of the world past, present and future that were laid upon Him.
My wife passed away of a terminal illness in 2008. This was our favorite song together back then, and still is for me. This performance is unbelievable. I cry every time, and sometimes pretty dog gone hard. Thank you Lord for the talent you have given these people.

YOU SAW them seeking comfort from the above mentioned topography, ONE OF THE MANY MARVELS YOUR PERFECT HANDS HAVE MADE. 👏👏🏾👏👏🏾👏👏🏾 YOU SAW their worries about tomorrow.
If their hearts were a window that they could look through, oh the pains and scars they would see. What a cruel fate the skin gives as a mask to the inward pain. But the skin couldn’t cover THE SUFFERING YOUR ONE AND ONLY SON BORED on the cross as PAYMENT for all our sins because HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ALONE HAD THE MERIT TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR HOLINESS. They have seen a lot of crazy things done in YOUR NAME. They are aware of hypocrisy in religious assemblies that like to be seen and heard. In addition, secular education teaches that there is no right and wrong, if GOD exists there is no way of relating to HIM, and moral standards shift according to the whims of fashion. Therefore, their minds are conditioned to question everything this world has to offer including “THY POWER THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED.” They have accepted the heavy burden of dealing with the troubles of this life and seek to know another way, YOU THE GREAT COMFORTER TO ALL who did receive YOU as their personal SAVIOR. Still, YOU have shown them NEW MERCY every day with each thought they make and each breath they take.
Unfortunately, like the prodigal son, we are all guilty of wandering far from YOU LORD because the negative experiences of our lives tend to build roadblocks to the TRUTH. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them to identify the way, truth, and eternal life (that is YOU). Since to know and follow your SPIRIT is more exciting than any 007 movies, and YOU DELIGHT MAKING the ordinary into extraordinary. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST MAKE them understand that there is no way around YOUR TRUTH, and that there is something about YOUR NAME. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them defeat in their minds what is false in YOUR EYES.
LORD GUIDE their thoughts to know that the path of sin is hard on their hearts for the purpose of crying out to YOU to know the joy, peace of having the heavy burden LIFTED by THE GOD OF PEACE I AM, and ANCHOR their souls in THE HAVEN OF REST. LORD GUIDE their understanding of words to use to come into YOUR PRESENCE with an honest reverence of WHO YOU ARE to experience the beauty that time can't erase YOUR WISDOM resting on their faces. LORD STRENGTHEN their determination to never waiver in efforts to search for YOU because the wages of sin is too high for anyone to pay. Additionally, THE KING OF KINGS is needed in their hearts to learn how to expand their capacity to love for YOU are LOVE in any language. 🥰 Once they learn to speak it with boldness through YOUR WONDERFUL COUNSELING all the world will hear, and know that LOVE is the language of their hearts. So LORD, KEEP KNOCKING on their door until they let YOU in to know hardships and struggles will end with a GREAT CELEBRATION WITH YOU. 🥰🙌🙌🏾
If one believes faith cannot be forced, YOU WILL GIVE that individual over to the stubborn heart to follow own counsel which will surely fail him or her to the extent that the punishment will last forever found in Psalms 81 NIV. Given this, I pray that YOU WILL MAKE that person see that this feeling is wasted for a world in which we become strangers as we age, gives us thrills instead of peace, aims to solve a problem but creates another, and unrest surges with each passing generation. Shed some light into their broken hearts for YOU ARE THE GREAT JEHOVAH, THE GOD THAT HEALETH thee.
Lastly, LORD when they call on YOU in earnest prayer to come into their hearts to be born again (repentance manifesting itself in a changed life), I pray that YOU WILL GIVE them the blessed assurance of their salvation because nothing breaks YOUR HEART, or tears YOU apart like when they cry from the trials of the devil who comes to slander, falsely accuse, steal, kill & destroy. Only by drawing nearer to YOU LORD will put them on a path to a glorious one way trip winding upward to YOU where pain is not welcome because the heart will never break anymore. For ONLY YOU UNDERSTANDS our tears since YOU LOOK at the heart, while humans look at the flesh.
O LOVE that will not let them go. When they don't have the strength to try, and have cried all they can cry hear their hearts that need YOU more today than yesterday. Many thanks LORD for speaking TRUTH in our lives TO BLESS those who are not offended by THEE. LET YOUR WILL BE DONE because YOUR LOVE ALONE CONQUERS everything by WAITING for them to cease struggling, and finally surrender to YOUR EMBRACE to learn about YOUR LOVE AND PROMISE TO TAKE CARE of your children exquisitely. 🥰 Since... One of my favorites. I can recall being in ER, awaiting outcome of my firstborn son...only praying whatever is God's Will as He always knows what's best. He took him Home at 19 years old. It was all of a sudden, had never been sick. Thankful he had been baptized into Christ.
I am hiding in the break room at work, trying to contain tears and despair. Thank you to all involved in this performance that lifts me up every single time. God is great and it is, indeed well with my soul.

Donald Elley operatic tenors don’t appeal to everyone, whereas David’s pop style vocals are more welcoming to the average listener
David has always come across to me as a bit prideful and self-exalting, whereas Guy comes across as totally God-exalting.

I’ve studied Islam, Issa is NOT Yeshua of the NT not their Allah is not our YHWH of Adam of any of the Bible prophets. Few example is of this is that Islam considers Yeshua as mere human being who never died and resurrected for our salvation and YHWH of the Bible never took all day to create Adam and Adam had to ask their allah to “please finish him by sunset if he can” and there’s 100 s more evidence of their Allah not being Christian’s YHWH and Yeshua.

P.S. it’s up to you but wish you would stick to KJV original manuscript of Greek translation rather than ESV, NIV etc. there’s many verses missing and changed in newer translations. And Rev. 22:19 written any that takes or subtract from the book will be stricken from book and judged harshly.

This song truly ministered to me. I can truly empathize with Horatio Spafford- the songwriter who penned this song. In 2008, my youngest daughter died at birth and I was completely heartbroken, devastated and I blamed myself and even God. But just as God did in Job, He gave and He took away. Guy Penrod and David Phelps are still the greatest vocal team in gospel music! Well in any genre in fact. The vocal band hasn't been the same since they separated. They performed off each other. Would love to see them reunited. God bless you both!! Glory to God in the highest!
One of the only things better then watching David sing is watching the praise that happens to the people around him. I especially love to see Russ Taff when he gets excited and overcome with emotion during David's singing. Beautiful!

Background[edit]This hymn was written after traumatic events in Spafford's life. The first was the death of his son at the age of 2 and the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago that was extensively damaged by the great fire). His business interests were further hit by the economic downturn of 1873, at which time he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre. In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. Many hymns have power to invoke a deep emotion within the human breast. But in my humble opinion, few have the power of this somber but beautiful song. A very nice rendition -
Mic I agree! When I first heard "It Is Well With My Soul" and found out the story behind the words that Horatio Spafford wrote, it gave me hope. Back then, I was a brand-new baby Christian and satan didn't like that and it seemed like he came out in full force against me. I was going through one of the most terrible and PAINFUL times of my life because drug addiction reared its UGLY head in my family and did its best to rip my family to shreds. (This ended up lasting for years, by the way.) Sometimes, the pain from what my family was going through was... indescribable... I think I began to understand some of what the Scripture talks about when it says: "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Co.ngregation sang this at memorial service for my dear friend yesterday. I couldn't sing, chocking back tears missing her, tho she is now with the Lord and her husband. David's talent is certainly stellar, as usual, on this hymn. His voice gives me chills.

Guy is ridiculously under appreciated next to someone like David Phelps. Personally, I’ve always much preferred Guy to David because he doesn’t do all of the crazy vocal stuff.

My grandparents used to travel to Gatlinburg every year to their conventions there. My grandmother passed in December of 2015 and grandfather passed about two weeks ago. Listening to these songs makes me so sad, but at the same time feel like I will always have a piece of them with me.
My dear sister, if Jesus is your Savior, you will see all of them (not just a piece) when you get to Glory!!! And don't let the spirit of sorrow settle in, we will all be together in that wondrous place sooner than we think!!!

(neither of which is reason for condemnation from yourself or anyone else) Let me put your mind at ease once and for all with this very simple prayer. I know it will work because I have seen the fruit of the lady's life who prayed that prayer. Say this and mean it: "Jesus, take my life and do something with it." Just as simple as that! And don't let anyone convince you that God will be offended, put out or taken aback by the simplicity of that prayer, The Apostle Paul prayed the shortest salvation prayer on record with just one word.... "LORD"! Now, if you don't have a Bible, you can get one on Amazon or any number of online Christian book stores. Begin by reading the Gospels and don't get bogged down with the "begats", they are there for a reason, although when trying to pronounce some of those names, it may seem a little tough to understand what the reason is. Just get through them the best you can. What reading through the 4 accounts of the Gospels will do for you (as a sort of collected biography, if you will), is to let you become aquainted with Jesus by "following" Him and the disciples through the day to day activities of His ministry here on the earth. You will get an opportunity to see Jesus' heart and have the chance to see the Father's heart through that journey also. Use your imagination as you read to "see" Jesus operate in His ministry and pay close attention to how He related to the Father, the disciples, the religious leaders and those whom He ministered to. Then move on to the letters. They are also called the Pauline Epistles. These will give you an awesome insight into who you are in Christ and what salvation really means to you personally in your every day life!!! The perks of salvation, if you will. That should give you a super powerful start on your brand new walk with Jesus, and introduce you to Him in a way that even many Christians have yet to know Him. Please don't waste another second of your life not being sure of your eternal destiny!!!! Just pray that simple prayer and the God who created the universe will be overjoyed to welcome you into His Family!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will never again have cause to be unsure or insecure about anything in your life!!!

Because God loves us, He kept it simple. John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Salvation is free and it's yours, simply accept the Savior.

This hymn was written by an American from Chicago Horatio Spafford circa 1875. The hymn was composed at a time of a series of the greatest tragedies in his life. There is a wikipedia article "It is well with my soul" which explains these events and Horatio Spafford's life.
